    Dear Mr. Porta , I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge in making the rattle! You are such an interesting man! We just made 2 for our grandkids! I tied rawhide knots and carved names and feathers in. Painted wolf tracks, teepee, turtle, and Thunderbird. I can't thank you enough for sharing!! I wish I could send you a picture but don't know how. I'm Nicole's husband. My name is Vern Younger. Thanks again, God bless!!

    Kenah (thank you) for this video Uncle! I'm dancing in my first powwow this September and I'm starting to work on my Eastern Woodland regalia. When I bought the buckskin for my dress, I was gifted a piece of rawhide so I can make a rattle. It's actually leftover rawhide from a hand drum the shop owner made, so I want my rattle to be very special.

      @@donaldportaUncle, I just wanted to let you know that I got my rattle finished just in time for that powwow back in September and it turned out so beautiful! Not only did I use corn inside of it, but also dried beans and squash seeds. Kenah again for doing these videos, I don't have anyone in my life to teach me traditional craftwork so you are truly a blessing 😊Next up is basket weaving!

    Thank-you Donald Porta so much for the care you take in everything you do here...
    The filming, the wonderful hint of the dog chews, the stitching that sings to me..
    I have a deep relationship with Rattles, AND this will be the 1st time that I will be making my own.
    My Heart is stirred deeply by this possibility...
    I am a good Cook, but my ability with sewing and fine craft work has been somewhat limited,
    due to some impatience and lack of bringing my full attention and care.
    I am inspired to Pray to use this process to help me grow in my Patience and bringing full attention to the details.
    I will give up my Perfectionism, which just makes me tense & awkward, and just do my best, trusting that I may be making the 1st of several Rattles.
    I can't imagine a more beautiful Gift from my heart to those I Love.
    Deep Gratitude, Suzanne

    Is there anything you cannot do? Great tutorial!! @7:46 I found so my punches remain sharp is to put a piece of leather (such as a piece of old belt) between the project you are punching holes and the wood. I know you have many skills and likely know how to sharpen your punches but I found over time they can bend or become misshapen. I was very surprised how much usable rawhide you got from those dog chews ...they have those in the dollar tree..I am definitely gone try to make some rattles ! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • @brandon3267
    @brandon3267 Před 2 lety +1

    Hi Donald, I love the tutorial. Although, the deerskin I used for the rattle head tends to fold, and press down when transporting it in bags e.t.c... It has been difficult to get it shaped properly again by teasing the shape back with my fingers, but I have managed it. Is there a way to make the rattle head rock hard? I have recently gifted an authentic Lakota rattle I found at a local market that was rock hard, and yet still seemed to be made of some kind of animal skin... It wouldn't collapse on itself if pressed. I would love to hear your advice, Donald. Best wishes, from Brandon.
