- I take the new ASIAir feature called Sky Atlas for a test-drive. It goes mostly according to plan, just a couple user glitches along the way.
This new feature is pretty amazing, maybe missing a few feature, but definitely a key addition to the already feature-rich ASIAir.

I wish ASIAIR would be available as a Mac app as well (should be easy to do for them)
I've used it a few times over the last 10 days and its been extremely useful. I've no need for any third party planetarium apps any longer. It could have a few more features, but overall im very satisfied with it. on my eqm-35 pro it works well with the asiair app running on my iPad mini. It doesn't fully center, but its extremely close and whatever minor framing adjustments I have to do, I can do from the preview screen by using the "tap & center" method
Nice! I wish I had a few more clear nights recently to put it through its paces, but yes I'm quite satisfied with it
I'll have to try the Sky Atlas feature this weekend!
if possible can you please make a video to polar align the telescope without Polaris using asi air plus?

I've had that "panic feeling" many times, and although I've heard the ending "happy music" in my head many times, it sure was nice to ACTUALLY hear happy music when it stopped slewing correctly, without a crash! :) Great video! The weather in my area has absolutely sucked. I finally got to try the new update yesterday and love it.
I'm going to give this feature a try tonight, so this is just the video I needed. Thanks--great job. And I love the music!

I upgraded my ASIAir and saw this addition. I was excited but didn't check it out since limited clearish nights here in the Pacific NW...Thanks for the video now I know about it. cool feature. Love how the ASIAir is always improving. Cheers!

Great video! I wasn’t aware of the new functionality. I was bemoaning framing a target a few weeks ago, running back and forth to Telescopious. Especially when Asiair centres on a chosen target and you realise just a little left and down includes a neighbouring DSO. Achieving the adjustment means more faffing. This new function is going to save time = more imaging time 👍

Been cloudy for weeks here, i booted up the ASI and was amazed to find this new feature. I can't wait to try it out.

thanks for the "stumbling"! i've been playing with this a bit, but you always learn something by watching someone else use a tool! for starters, i learned that the active buttons in the lower right for this feature change with the mode it's in, which i hadn't been observant enough to see while i was actively running it. clearer now!

Awesome. I was out of state and didn’t know there was an update. I pretty much love it for deep sky. It’s planetary where the Air flunks. I can name a lot of things needed there. Easy ones are 1) Winjupos file naming, ROI, and filter plans for mono. I wish I could completely dump my laptop but I’m still heavily dependent on Sharpcap because of the Airs lack of solar system features.
Yes, agreed! A full-featured planetary suite on the app would be incredible

What video capture s/w do you use to show your asiair screen and also add in yourself in the corner?
Thanks Frank! This was done on the ipad screen record function (since replaced by a samsung galaxy tab due to screen hangups and wow is it better) but I add myself to the corner with some wizardy in Premiere Pro after the fact.
Tried out this feature a few nights ago - was able to use on my original ASIAIR which is good to see it's available for all models. I though it was great to be able to move around the sky freely to get the perfect framing for an object, particularly for one (eg Gum 16) that isn't listed in the ASIAIR's list of objects so that was fantastic. A mosaic feature would be also be great.
Definitely especially useful for those unlisted objects!
Great video. Lots to change on the app. But definitely a improvement. Framing is easier now as it auto solves the fov and rotation. Would like an adjustable horizon like in sky safari. So nothing below 20 alt. Have tried it when it came out and zero instructions so maybe some info from zwo would be nice. Who knows what's coming with the updates. Would defo like to see pec and predictive pec from the guide screen. 👍🏻👍🏻

Great video with some real helpful information. I recently started playing around with that feature but didn't get to deep into it.
An off topic question if I may. I'm using the ASIAir Pro and have yet to have it carry out an automatic meridian flip, does the Pro have the ability to do that? I've got the settings set for stopping the tracking 5 min before meridian flip and a 5 min delay after the flip but no automatic flip.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, the Pro definitely does the meridian flip, assuming you're in autorun or plan mode and you have any flipping settings turned off on your mount. I forget my exact settings, but the first few times I watched it really carefully to make sure everything went fine and after that I trusted it. Try those settings you have and you might find you can pare them down to a shorter delay. It also will complete the last full exposure it's on, then do a countdown to flip, and then perform the flip. Sometimes it seems like a long wait, but it eventually goes.
This is great, Don't use align it then think that that's the home position as I found out lol. Gonna use this to frame the dark shark nebula.
How cool would it be to rotate the camera region. Maybe zwo will make an auto camera rotator motor in the future. An auto polar-align would also be appreciated

Tbh, surprised the offline planning mode wasn't in this initial roll-out, but then again their cadence for releases is pretty fast, so it maybe in the pipeline. Fingers crossed!

Definitely a cracking iPad case there. :) It really feels like this is the 1st version of this feature which is rough but ready. I'd love to be able to just turn off the constellation pictures as I find them distracting. Love the feature though.

You don’t need to recalibrate unless your 1st calibration was bad. Just verify the calibration flipped. Wait for guiding to settle. My mount is setup outside for months and I only re-calibrate if I change my guidescope. Get a good cal on the meridian and celestial equator and if it’s good keep using it.
A few of my settings had defaulted after the version upgrade, so it didn't flip the calibration automatically. But yes, it generally does quite well on the meridian flip. I set up and tear down every time I image, so I don't think it would work for me to just reuse the guiding calibration every time. But maybe?
Your guiding is pretty damn good. What is your guiding setup?
Yeah it was a good night for guiding and I had the aggression dialed in! I have a 60mm guidescope and a ASI290mm mini guide camera. On good nights I hover around .30 and on bad ones up near .60 which for a 400mm imaging train is just fine!
I tried it last night on V2.2.1-10.74. I'm still trying to get ASIAir Plus 256 GO TO feature to work consistently. I've got an C8 with AVX mount and I only have an ASI585MC planetary. ASIAir doesn't plate solve with native focal length 2030 in the PA procedure but will it I pop on the 6.3 focal reducer. But GO TO is still inconsistent. Without using Sky Atlas it might find 2 or 3 objects and center but eventually it will fail on an object and slew to la la land. Very frustrating. I tried Sky Atlas last night to see if I could see how ASIAir finds objects. I chose Vega and it found it and centered. Then M13 Hercules cluster. Worked. Tested with Andromeda and it took a while for it to center. Then tried a star in the Pliaedes and ASIAir couldn't find it. Started pointing towards the horizon. I'm thinking ASIAir doesn't work with long focal lengths and smaller sensor cameras. Thanks for your excellent demonstration.
I have an image taken from previous night. Which I composed using Sky Atlas. I do not know the coordinates of RA and DEC center. Today I want to come back to the same coordinates using yesterday's image. How do do this using ASI AIR please?

Hi Nick, what I would like to try is what happens if you use a star tracker?? So, if you manually move the camera/lens on a star tracker mount, does the FOV move in the Sky Atlas?? This would be a really nice feature for those who want a really light and portable setup :) PS got your Redcat yet ??
Oooh good question. Now I want to try it with a star tracker. I don't think the blue box would move in real time with either a star tracker mount or a fully computerized one. That location is based on the plate solve after slewing as far as I know. Now I want to double-check that. But yes, it would presumably work to a certain degree and would be most useful in double-checking framing after manually moving.
@@WindyCityAstrophotography I would “assume” that you could move the lens, take a short photo and let the ASIair plate solve, so that if you then tap the Big Dipper icon, you will see the current FOV position. Worth a try ? Luckily tonight on the south coast of the UK it’s clear and warm :)
Yes, that's my assumption, too! The current FOV would update with each plate solve. Let me know how it goes
Well it looks like it doesn’t work ie polar aligned my scope (8”RC on an EQ6-R Pro mount). Returned scope to the home position pointing to Polaris. Next I released the clutches and pointed the scope to another area of the Sky and took a 2sec exposure in Preview mode. Pressed plate-solve, which it did BUT when I entered Sky Atlas, it still showed the FOV box pointing to Polaris and not the new location. So it must use positional data from the Mount to plot the FOV on Sky Atlas and not any plate solving data from the Preview screen. This is a real shame in my view :( Still I might end up ditching my Skyadventurer (unused) and Skywatcher At-GTI for the new Skywatcher Skyadventurer GTI, which appears to be a portable GoTo mount ????
I had a little play with sky atlas on my v1 asiair a couple of weeks ago, we have lost darkness here now. I found it to be very good, very accurate. I think now I won't have to link asiair with sky safari which is a good thing.

It is the 1.75" Literoc tripod that comes with this version of the iOptron CEM40 mount
Did you find out what the "Align" icon is used for ?
Or if I may .....for us "slow learners" - may I ask to explain ( if possible ) what each icon is used for ? Center / Align / Go Object /Go Cross.
Y'know, I never got a full answer on the Align icon. Top of my list next time out. My guess was that it will sync the mount to the Target box (red) and automatically match the Scope box (blue) and Target box (red) without actually moving the mount. Sort of like saying "you're actually pointed here" similar to the Sync Mount option in the preview mode after Plate Solving.
My understanding of the other icons: "Center" will center your Target box (red) on the selected Object. "GoObject" will slew the telescope to the selected object (if any) regardless of where the Target box (red) is pointed. "GoCross" will slew the telescope to wherever the Target box is pointed.

I see your scope go to certain galaxies or nebulas, but it shows them like its the HST. So it is showing views from its memory and not the real view? Like Nebulas, I can't see much of them without a filter and even then it's not like stacked exposures show. I get great Planetary views with those orthoscopics though.
I have to be in Bortle 1 to 2 skies (I live in Southern NM) for instance to see M81 that looks like a spiral, but M82 an irregular galaxy looks like not much more than a fuzzy spot at 250x in a C6-N 750 focal length at F5, using a Fujiyama 6mm Abbe Ortho with an Omni 2x Barlow.
I just stargaze and seldom take a 1/2 second exposure picture unless I have a good view already, usually globular clusters as they fascinate me. I couldn't afford a setup like yours let alone figure out how to use it as I'm tech-illiterate.
I have an Explore Scientific AZ with hand controls I bought on sale for $250 and my C6-N (new in box ota) I bought on eBay so my whole set up was $425, I have eyepieces that cost me over time another $300, most expensive being that Fujiyama, but most were $55 or less. I also bought a Zhumell100 last year before they jumped in price that came with some surprisingly good Kellner EPs.
The views it is seeing are real-time images in the ASIAir. Even a 10-second exposure of some deep-sky objects with the right filter can show some pretty amazing detail. My roots are firmly in visual astronomy and whenever I am out at a dark sky site for imaging I always take some time to do visual as well. I made the jump deep into astrophotography specifically to be able to image from the middle of the city so I wasn't relying on 1 or 2 dark sky trips a year. Still, nothing beats a dark sky!
11 months in the future … the sky atlas is pretty good but …. It would be great if the atlas wasn’t locked onto terrestrial view, where orientation is fixed to the zenith.
I have the asi air plus, where can I download this to my unit. On their web site I see nothing about it at all.
Make sure your ASIAir app is updated on your device (phone or tablet) and then the next time you boot up the ASIAir it will run the update!

Thank you! If the translation was correct I think you were asking about seeing a black hole and accretion disc. I won't be able to quite do that with my setup but there are a few black-hole related objects I can image 😎
Sorry to say, but I had a hard time following you in this video.Maybe if you defined the elements of the screen I would know what blue box and red box were.
Have you used the new Sky Atlas in AAP ? I used it for the first time last weekend and "fiddled" with it....wasn't sure what I was doing or looking at. After watching this video - I learned much
Thanks for the honest feedback! Blue box (labeled Scope) is where the scope is currently pointed as determined by ASIAir plate solve, and the Red box (labeled Target) is where the scope would slew to if you hit "GoCross" which has to be the most confusingly named button 😆 There were a couple dropped sections where the screen capture froze up (trying a new tablet next time around) and I think I was a little clearer during one of those, but I was also just figuring it out as I went!
