The Depot: Knex Ball Machine with a Construction Site Theme -- At Blocks to Bricks Museum

- The Depot is a Knex ball machine themed after a construction site, and it is currently on display at Blocks to Bricks museum in Woodfield Mall (located in Schaumburg, Illinois). It features many themed elements, such as a dump truck, crane, buzzsaw, and even a port-a-poty!
This collaboration project between Tornado96 and I began July 2017 when he came over for 5 days on a trip to the States. It turned out larger than we expected (we only finished the lifts!) so I spent the remaining months finishing the paths and detailing, completing most of it by the end of summer. We wanted to theme it after a construction site because we had lots of ideas for elements and lifts. This led to the most heavily-themed Knex ball machine ever built. Another goal was to make it have many moving parts. The most time was spent on the base area and the mechanisms located beneath the surface.
We didn't begin this machine knowing it would be in a museum. In Janurary 2018 I found out about Blocks to Bricks, and that eventually led to it being on display there. The machine was assembled and filmed at the beginning of June, and the museum opened shortly after.
Getting the machine transported and ready was a big challenge because I was sick with a chronic illness. I thought this would make it impossible to complete the project, but God got me through the difficult time and enabled me to travel and finish building it, even though the symptoms were happening. Surely I now know, by experience, what it means to do "all things through Christ who strengthens me." Even sickness cannot outdo the power of Jesus.
Special thanks also to my family, especially my brother, for helping in assembly and traveling. I couldn't have done it without them!

I've been playing with Knex since I was 5. Now I'm 20 and still build stuff like roller coasters and ball machines
I really liked the K'nex men...They basically looked liked construction workers about two inches high(They're definitely taller then Lego men) 'dancing' a little as the spheres rolled toward and under them =) Pretty cool. Thanks for the upload.

This is beautiful, I love how dense and chaotic it is, and I love the themed aspect of it, I don't know if I've ever seen someone do that before. The museum must be thrilled!
There are some other themed machines, but not as heavily-themed as this one. Filming it while everything was running made the video a lot more interesting than just path by path. Thanks!
Shadowman How often does the museum have the machine run? Have you had problems with any of the more mechanically complex elements breaking down?
It isn't running right now because they need to finish the official circuitry (code requirements) and also put a glass barrier around it. I'm not sure when they'll get that done, but the machine was run for a long time during testing/filming and I fixed any problems that arose. Hopefully if something breaks someone can find out how to fix it.
Reliability has a always been my biggest challenge at The Works Museum. They run it 8 hours a day, 7 days a week. I the occasional frantic email if something goes horribly wrong :P
Haha. Well this machine will have a motion-sensing timer, so when nobody is around it will be off.

Love it. You guys really nailed the theme with all the little elements. The crane and little house for example are clear, but the 'window washer' and my personal favorite, the Dixie, really add to the theme. A true masterpiece again, congrats on a place in the museum. Keep it up, can't wait what you two have in store for us next.

Shadowman I'm not really active anymore, but I check youtube sometimes for new stuff. If I ever have some spare time, maybe I could build some new stuff but I'm not sure that will happen :)
Ah, makes sense, I don't have much time either. Which is why this machine took more than 6 months to build haha.

Shadowman It definitely has been! I haven’t had much time, so I’ve been working on a coaster for almost four years now that I’m hoping to finish soon. I also should be able to finish a video for a smaller coaster I made a while ago too. I’ve missed building a lot, so I’m gonna try to get back into it more before I go to college, and maybe even bring some K’Nex with me there!
@@FrIeDeGgS887 Haha, 4 years is a pretty long time. It's good that you plan to continue building though, even while at college. I wish I had my Knex here, but then again it would be a pain to transport them. I guess bringing micro pieces would be a lot easier.

Can you make a ball machine that looks like the deepwater horizon. The ball lift is the drill pipe.
So how did you make the reciprocating lift? Do you have a large gear underneath that the chain attaches to? Or another chain underneath that the lift chain attaches to so that it reciprocates?
There's a long chain running underneath that connects the crane and elevator, so they are synced when going up and down. There's a part where the chain attaches in the middle that's connected to a forward/reverse transmission, much like the one I had on Citadel's elevator.
