  • Is there a quail that has white meat? That is a question that I get fairly frequently. The short answer is no. Not even the Texas A&M all white birds are white meat.

We are in a little town in Missouri in between Hannibal and St Louis, so I think if they don't make way too much noise, we can do this! I have been considering quail but I wanted my wife to try it first. I was able to get some from Publix; expensive little buggers. I have never been a fan of fried chicken, especially the dark meat. I know, a southerner that doesn't like fried chicken must be a peculiar fellow. However, I really enjoy bbq chicken legs and thighs. Back to the quail. We baked them, skin on. They came pre-seasoned but I crushed some black pepper on them and drizzled a little bbq sauce on them. Skin on, they seemed to retain their moisture. I thought the taste was similar to dark meat chicken but much more rich but not like liver. I can't stand liver. The store bought packaged quail seemed to be smaller that what I've seen Chris butcher. Four weighed only about one pound that had a price tag of $12.99. That being said, it did seem more feeling, even though not initially. With the higher protein, I think my body was satisfied with less volume.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety

      I find that they are a dense meat so it doesn't take as much as you would think to fill you up. And you are correct, a southerner who doesn't like fried chicken is a little strange. But there are lots of things I don't like that everyone else does. Like Pineapple for example. I can't stand that stuff.

Quick question: I keep jumbo quails both for eggs and for meat and I was told that I should feed a high protean 22 diet to quails which i plan to butcher and a low protean 18 diet for quail which I keep for eggs. Hi Chris, I'm from Bangladesh. I watch all of your videos.
    I've 23 quails. 13-14 of them lay egg everyday.I had 16 quail before but recently added 7 more .I have 2 male and 21 female as I don't want to incubate eggs. I only want eggs.
    I switch on lights at very early of evening before it get's too dark. my quails lay eggs between 5.30 PM - 9.50 PM. Now I've three questions here. which light is better for quails a CFL, LED or Incandescent bulb ?
    If I switch on lights at the early on the morning darkness, Will they still lay eggs?
    Is it necessary to give them artificial light during summer months ?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't know that it really matters which light. I use LEDs because they are so much more efficient and they work well for me. Once the days get to about 14 hours a day of light, you won't need to use the supplemental light any longer. It is only needed on the short days of winter. And I have my lights come on in the morning but you can run them at night or morning. I hope that helps.

    Hi Chris! Hope you and your wife are doing well! I have a question...at what age do quail stop growing to the point where they are a good size for eating? I have 6 male jumbo coturnix in a grow out pen. They are 7.5 weeks and it seems that they are not adding any more weight. They range from 8 to 9 oz. These are the smaller ones who didn't make the cut. (I have three larger 9 to 10+ oz males from the same hatch in my breeder pens) Can I expect these smaller guys to get any bigger? Thanks!

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety

      We are both doing well, thanks for asking. Really, by the time they reach about 8 weeks old there isn't a lot of growth after that. They will continue to put on weight but it won't be a lot and it will be much slower than what they did as they were growing. In most cases you can expect that at about 8 weeks they are pretty much fully grown.

    This isn’t related to this video, but hoping for an answer anyway. The only feed I’ve been able to find for quail is Purina Gamebird Chow for growth and plumage. Haven’t been able to find anything labeled as starter. Would you start your quail on this? If not, what about chic starter?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety +1

      I would go with the gamebird chow over the chick starter but either one would work ok. They may not be the ideal food for your birds but they will be ok while you search for something else. You might check with feed stores in your area and talk to them to see if they can order it in for you. Many of them have the ability to do that but just don't carry it on hand because their isn't enough demand. Also, turkey starter is a good substitute if you can find that. I hope that helps.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety

      Watery poop can be a number of things. It might just be an upset stomach for whatever strange reason, it could be some kind of infection (intestinal bacteria), it could be worms. I am afraid i can't diagnosis it over the internet. If it is an infection it will need to be treated with antibiotics pretty quickly. The only way to know for sure is to get tests done by a veterinarian. If that isn't an option (it would be expensive) then you can start with a round of broad-spectrum antibiotics that you should be able to pick up at a farm supply store. They should be able to point you to the right ones. I hope that helps.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  Před 5 lety

      leg problems usually heal up pretty well on their own. With the beak problem though, especially if they were hatched that way, it is usually a bad sign and there isn't much you can do. if the bird is not able to eat and drink well I would suggest culling. If it is albe to eat fine then there really isn't anything to do but you might not want to breed that bird on the chance that it is a genetic issue. I hope that helps.

At least the bobwhites that I have hunted around here seem to be that way.
