Update for you, Rick and everyone.
Vida, the grey horse soaked in blood, had emergency surgery for serious lacerations and is back at barracks.
Quaker, a black stallion which collied with the Mercedes car, had life saving surgery last night and is at an Equine hospital.
Trojan and Tennyson (who ran into the bus) are expected to make full recoveries and are resting under the observation of Army veterinary officers.
Vida and a Quaker may never serve again with the army.
No reports of any broken bones with any of the horses involved.
Prayers for all the horses! 😢

Rick, I just saw your video and read an updated article in the UK "Independent." The two horses are being given the best veterinary care and people have signed a petition for the horses to be retired in a sanctuary.
"Two of the five horses that rampaged through central London suffered serious injuries and have undergone operations, the British army said. One has since been transferred to an equine hospital while the others remain under close observation."
"Vida was the most visibly injured and the pictures of the horse running through London soaked in blood were horrifying. Vida was operated on overnight and is currently in stables at the Hyde Park Barracks under observation.”
Quaker was also operated on overnight but it was decided to move the horse to an equine hospital in the early hours for more specialist treatment. (It's been said that Quaker suffered worse injuries than Vida.)
“The extent of the injuries is not completely clear but we don’t believe at this stage there are any broken bones,” the spokesman said.
“The blood seen on Vida (the grey horse) was consistent with lacerations.”
Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for the horses to be sent to a sanctuary.
The UK’s oldest equine charity has offered to rehome the runaway Household Cavalry horses.
The horses had initially been spooked by the noise of concrete being shifted by builders at a property in Belgravia. Lt Col Matt Woodward, Commanding Officer, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, later said: “A small group of horses were spooked by construction work in a quiet side street in Belgravia where building materials were dropped from height right next to them.”
Every morning a construction truck arrives to carry away the debris excavated from the basement of the property. Construction workers said the travelator, which was being used to transfer excavated earth and soil from the basement onto a truck parked outside the building, had been switched on just after 8am. The Army confirmed that the horses had thrown off their riders after being spooked by building materials being dropped through a chute as they rode past.
Susie Hungerford, a 55-year-old former banker from Belgravia said: “These construction sites don’t care how loud they are, they don’t care, things just drop, they spook me, they spook her [gesturing to her dog], but they don’t care.”

I'm British myself and I think the use of horses for the Royals should have ended years ago. This incodent asside; they spend all day in a stable or being ridden, there is no spaces for them to graze at Buckingham Palace so is really no down time for them. I read somewhere they get like 1 month out of the year where they are taken to a place to graze, appart from that it's stable or work.
    No life for a horse.
I hate how people say "they are looked after so well" ...Bro you don't know anything about horses. They just repeat what they have been told and the small bits of specifically chosen content that is released from Buckingham Palace.

I've been saying for years that the horses used in the guard, parades, and patrols are treated abhorrently but everyone I talk to says I know nothing about horses even though Ive spent my whole life around them.
The riders from the kings guard have very little equine training before they are put on the back of a horse and told to ride in formation.

This is a case of where the city of Portland here in the state of Oregon did something correct a few years ago. The city discontinued the horse patrol & now have officers on bicycles instead of horses. When the Portland city horse patrol was in effect I always felt badly for the horses being in the cold heavy rains of November & December with heavy stock saddles & shoes with Borium metal added. Those poor horses of both countries being ridden in an urban environment was the epitome of stupidity & lack of caring for the horses. At least here in Oregon the horses were owned by the patrol officers who new how to ride & were very familiar with their own horses.

A lot of urban police departments keep horses because they are big and scary to people not familiar with horses - which these days most aren't. They are great for crowd control as well as good PR with the general public. Interestingly, most police horses are Clydesdales and other drafts. Many of the Clydes come from Warm Springs Ranch, where they raise the horses for Budweiser. They get the ones that are a little smaller or not marked correctly to use on the hitches, but they are big, calm and sensible and fine for police work.

This just comes to show that using horses in crowded cities for any use be it military, police or buggie rides should absolutely be banned in this day and age... There is NO reason to use animals especially under these conditions. They should be in a pasture where they belong and do exercises and activities with their riders outside in nature, not in a city where they walk in concrete or are stabled in small boxes most of the day.

I’m British. The majority of the soldiers have never been near a horse before joining one of the King’s Guards regiments, let alone on one. Very few of the soldiers can ride well at a walk (they generally look like a sack of potatoes on the horse’s back) never mind well enough to handle a spooked horse. There’s no need for horses in the city anymore, there’s plenty of army bases in the countryside if they want to keep horses for displays etc…
As to our saying “thrown”, it’s just colloquial for “fell off” and doesn’t actually blame the horse for it. I’ve been thrown plenty of times, but no one, and definitely not me, blamed the horse. A fall is generally followed with a rundown of what *you* did wrong and what you should’ve done to prevent ending up on the ground.

    • @Tecolote41
      @Tecolote41 Před 2 měsíci +10

A horse, running at full speed on concrete, with horseshoes on, is not able to control its direction as well as in a field, so when they came in front of the two bus, they tried to go through the corridor, but then one of them hit the bus.

Thanks for this video Rick. Had the day getting abuse from posh horse royal people with double barrelled names, because I called out the cruelty to horses when they're exploited for sports. I am British myself, but I have been watching your channel for years. You have taught me a lot about pain bits, metal shoes, metal buckles and whips. I volunteer at a horse sanctuary, and I am happy to say that they get to live in little herds. They get to live bare foot on grass and natural earth, and have the freedom to move in and out of shelters and outside with plenty of space. They are the lucky ones

I find it hard to take seriously the complaints about how British horses are kept knowing that it is mainly up to charities to provide appropriate end of life care for equines in the USA. Any country that thinks that it is appropriate to ship Horses that are in chronic or acute pain to another country for slaughter after running them through auction after auction does not have a leg to stand on! And don't get me started on the Big Lick horses.

I'm a very suspicious person anyway. I watch Ima Survivor Sanctuary and Longhorn Lester's and everyone else pretty much in that area. The horses have been getting more and more anxious with so many people right there in their face really. It's been hard sometimes to watch them go through that!!!! Sometimes I wish I could say what I really want to say but of course I don't usually more tactfully. Lol. Keep watching them when you get a chance to. I was thinking yes he's watching this. Lol. Some farmers caught her about half a mile away and she had a huge cut running from her left shoulder almost to her thigh, just laid her open! It took her about 6 months to recover, poor thing and she was never the same after that. Beware riders, they can spook at anything!

Part of the training of these cavalry horses is bomb training. They go through extensive desensitisation training which includes loud noises close to them, explosions and fire training. What went wrong? Apparently they bolted from something being dropped close to them whilst passing a building site. I would say the riders were not up to task on this one.

I love horses, had my own when I was alot younger. Why didn't any good samaritans try and help.? Talk calm , move slow if they're running step in front of them and grab a rein. It really just helps to step out, hold your arms out to either side of you and say whoa down calmly. I tackled many a horse with this maneuver. Usually they slow to a trot and then a stop a few feet away from you, they blow hard and snort and look around, as if to say " What am I running from?" Just move slow, talk calm and then you have your horse.

The most valuable lesson I ever learned when I was a young, rather annoying kid still learning to ride, was that it's NEVER the horses fault.
No matter what you as a human think happened, no matter how careful you tried to be. If someone gets injured or something otherwise goes wrong, *it was a humans fault* even if it wasnt yours directly. The horse absolutely never should be blamed for the outcome.
I am so thankful for my old teacher, who told me this in no uncertain terms (after I had thoroughly made a fool of myself)
"Get up, stop crying, that was on you. Who pulled the horse from her pen? Who tacked her up? Who brought her to the arena? You did, so take responsibility for your decisions."
People that don't understand that should never handle horses on their own, especially not in such high-stress situations where something is bound to go wrong eventually. This hurts my heart :/

They say that two of the horses are critical.I have been watching the kings guards on horseback and the riders are not comfortable on horseback.the are fearful, and I have seen several that do not remain in control of the animal.I've also noticed that the horses lack ground manners. They bite at people standing near them. The animals must be trained to be near the sights and sounds of the city and people. The Clydesdales are so accustomed to human contact that during a parade I touched one .
These animals may have been or are war horses, I noticed they move like they are trained in dressage, but what the animals are exposed to are real world stresses.
The whole horse is bleeding so much because he is running and his heart is racing.
This was Not the horses fault.
These horses are not exposed to the sights and sounds of the city and those riders are far too inexperienced. The animals need more training and so do the riders
