I'm here because I need to paint my daughter's Mazda 2 front fenders, never done that before, let's see how it goes!!!! Thanks for the great information your channel provides! 👍
You're welcome - feel free to ask ?s as you go :)
man you are purely old school.....but old school works!!!
Yes - there is no old school any more because they literally don't fix panels any more. Body shops can't find guys that can do the work :)
@@LakesideAutobody and customers dont want bondo....Ridiculous. IMO. They hear all the false information out there see one failure and figure everything is crap.
@@Mikefngarage I know - it's so crazy . I like these guy who think a magnet can tell them if there's filler. When I'm done on 99% of filler jobs, a magnet sticks just fine. Again, bad info by magazines, tv, etc. Always love talking to you Mike - great support :)
it's also good to wet the floor to keep the dust down.
My uncle is a body man and has been for 60 years and he always made sure it’s clean clean and clean before painting.
That's the secret 👍✌
@@LakesideAutobody you have one
Beautiful work. Car is clean.
I was surprised that you didn't lay some sealer on the hi-build and the red door but it came out looking great Jerry.
Thanks for taking us along! 👍
Hope you have a great weekend
I was but it was like 90 degrees that day and I decided to skip that step. Plus - that Matrix paint covers really well. Have a great weekend Jim - always a pleasure to hear from you my friend :)
The car looks good Jerry. Your son may want to keep it now
He put insurance on it and is driving it now - having a bit of trouble putting it up for sale :)
Great job Jerry.
Thanks Leigh :)
Finally got the chance to finish watching the video…great job Jerry as always the car turned out perfect!
Thanks UPK - hope your having a great summer 😊
@@LakesideAutobody working like crazy but enjoying everyday Jerry…enjoy the rest of your week and I look forward to Fridays video!
Iove painting It’s very satisfying
Love it Jerry - Already looking forward to your next one!
Good to hear C A - always good to hear from you my friend :)
Very good job looks good…
looks great, thanks for the video
You're welcome - thanks for watching :)
That turned out excellent. The color looks great on that car
I like the color a lot :)
I always enjoy watching and learning from your videos.
Thanks Doug - that's good to hear. Have a good week :)
I had a pearl white 95 stealth tt and my dad had a 91 pearl white tt also. They were fun cars and beautiful paint in the sun
You're right about that paint :)
That's what I call a beautiful paint job Jerry 👨🎓👍👍👍
Thanks 👍 Vicshone - this car has gown on me while working on it. I might have to get myself a fast and furious car one day :)
@@LakesideAutobody 🤣🤣🤣
I learned how to repair fender corrosion damage thanks to your very detailed videos. Once more, another amazing repair, specially building up the line inside and outside where the door meets the quarter panel. I have the exact issue with my car but fender was not damaged, I definitely do not have the capabilities to make that kind of repair so, I was wondering, what can I expect to pay in average for such a repair? I may or may not be able to get a replacement door, it is a fairly rare car to find at junk yards, thank you very much for your incredible and insightful videos.
You're welcome - glad you find them useful. Prices vary so much from shop to shop...I couldn't really give you an accurate estimate. Might be best to just stop and ask - then go from there 😊
Great video that looks amazing
I haven’t talk to you in long time I’m going to up there to do hail repair
You rock Jerry! Nice work 👏
Thanks Curtis - have a good weekend my friend :)_
Wow Beautiful
I appreciate that Bobrat - my kid is having fun driving it around now. V6 - 5 speed w/ 62000 miles on it :)
Amazing job Jerry as usual !! Car looks incredible. Im sure you son will enjoy it.
Hope hes easier on his cars than my son is 🙄😆
He's pretty careful. I'm sure he'll put it to the test though 😊✌
@@LakesideAutobody Yes no dout !!
👍🏻Nice Job!!! I’m almost ready to paint my hot rod but life keeps getting in the way….
I get it. Man... this summer has been busy for me so far - can't catch up. Nice to hear from you MM :)
After all hardcore body work been through now its beautiful more than ever. I'd love to try that 3000GT for a spin.
My kid was going to flip it but I think he fell in love w/ it. Real tight suspension, fast, 5 speed, air works - loaded, infinity factory stereo, etc. It's an awesome little car :)
@@LakesideAutobody definetely a fine underated Japanese sports car. Its a shame Mitsbishi dont even make 3000GT's anymore.
@@nicsivan5105 I can't believe how many options this car has on it - rear window washer/wiper, infinity sound, air, cruise, power everything, sun roof, leather, even a super cool looking spare tire with an aluminum spoked rim. Very cool little car for sure - just awesome to drive :)
Amazing!!!
Another Great video this is one of my favorite imports
The car has really gown on me. I was always a 70's MOPAR guy but I really love the tight suspension, 5 speed, air, cruise, instant start up, etc. Great little car :)
You do very nice work!!
Great video very informative thank you jerry keep up the good work you do
I appreciate that Husky - have a great weekend. I probably asked this once before but where do you live - like what state?
Nice work.
Thanks Bear - have a good week end my friend :)
Your a very patient guy! The amounts of coats to make this color! Is this the same car (your sons) with the custom front bumper?
Yes - same car. It's super clean - zero rust, 62000 miles, perfect interior, loaded and everything works. We have the window sticker from when it was new. Can you believe this thing was $36,000 dollars new in '97 ? - that's a lot of dough for back then. It's super fun to drive with the 5 speed and all - cool little car. I think the custom bumper will make the front a lot tougher looking so it'll be worth the work :)
@@LakesideAutobody That was big bucks back then! Now you don’t get much for $36k.
I have an old craftsman compressor identical to yours and a larger 30 gallon compressor as well. I have seen several widely recognized “experts” say these compressors are too small to properly paint a car. However, I see you doing exactly what they look down on. What am I missing? Do you have to slow down more often to help a smaller compressor keep up?
You're not missing anything. This is not necessarily a small compressor if your compressor is like mine it puts out 5.4 scfm at 90 psi and 6.4 scfm at 40psi. That's pretty hard to find today in a small compressor. Harbor Freight doesn't sell anything that comes close except one at 5.3 scfm at 40. These were USA made by campbell hausfeld or devilbiss they were unbelievably well built and could easily put out enough air to spray a car at around 20-25 psi at the gun. Conventional (older guns) work well too 'cause they use a bit less air than some HVLP guns like the 3M Performance gun I use.
I was surprised to see how low you kept the air pressure. Seems like most of the painters I watch go 23-28psi. Was that a HF Black Widow gun you were using or was it like a High Transfer gun? Were you still shooting for 15-19 when you had to adjust while the compressor was running? Car looks great!
That gun was the 3M Performance Spray gun HVLP - yes it is one of the high efficiency guns. It does use more air than my other guns - not sure why but it sprays nice and super easy to clean - just wipe the needle and throw everything else out. Yes, I was still using 15-19 while the compressor was running and while painting the exterior. There is a lot less over spray in the shop though with this gun too as you can see in the video. In my other painting vids using a conventional gun you'll see a lot of mist or fog in the shop while spraying :)
Looks great! Any tips for painting over black paint with white paint? I bought new rims for my daughters truck but they’re black. I also left a comment on your pairing steel wheels video. Yeah, I’m that guy working on his daughters truck who always leaves comments. Thanks for teaching me so much!
You're welcome David - thanks for the comments. If you are changing from black to white, it makes it easier to cover if you throw a coat of primer or sealer on first. Primer helps cover minor imperfections and helps with adhesion too :)
Another great Video, Thanks for explaining it so well and taking the time to do it. I think my Jeep Wrangler's original paint was Pearl Coat but I will have to check. Its a 93 so it may be before Pearl Coat became popular.
The paint is called "Electric Blue Metallic" and the code is PC3. Do you know by chance?
I don't think it is but not positive. I always liked that electric blue type paint. Had a Ranger with that type of color and I really liked it - my wife didn't but for some reason I loved it. czcams.com/video/8XaZBy7GC7A/video.html
What is the best paint color that doesn't show body work imperfections as much as others? I have a 2004 Dodge truck I'm doing extensive body work to and will be repainting the whole truck. It's a burgundy color right now and I like between a medium and dark grey. But I'm open to suggestions.
Light colors hide waves and imperfections better than dark. The absolute best is probably white but there may be others that trump that that I'm not aware of ✌
Always enjoy your vids. Why don't you R&I all that stuff?
Thanks Bill - what do you mean by R&I?
@@LakesideAutobody Remove and install. Belt moulding, side mirror, door handle, lower door molding. It's what we do before painting. None the less, looks great!!
@@billsmith9937 Good question. A boss of mine always made us put everything together before painting to avoid marring the soft paint. I sort of got attached to doing it that way because with my luck, most of the time I would end up messing something up. I'm pretty accurate at masking so - most would never be able to know the difference :)
@@LakesideAutobody Fair enough. Hope all was sanded good and jambed before putting on.. We don't put an orange door on a white car with out making sure it is the same color. I take it alll apart. Neat to see how other people do things. Maybe I should start my own thing? Keep it up sir! Thanks!
@@billsmith9937 This is a car that will be flipped - so there's not really a customer. Here's prepping the door - czcams.com/video/eTJWn06UUUw/video.html You should start your own thing for sure. Today my goal, and I think I got it from a few very smart shop owners, is efficiency - aiming for good work (not perfection) but as little wasted time, materials and money as possible. Nice talking to you Bill - have a great week my friend :)
I see that you don't close off the door opening and was wondering if any paint gets inside the car.
No - just smells like a body shop for a few days afterwards. You can try to cover most things up with sheets or blankets though - it would help but you'd still have the smell. Everything in that car cleaned up really well. :)
did the customer pay extra for over spray in cab
If you ever have any over spray anywhere you don't want it (it will happen) you can easily wipe it right off with a bit of thinner on a clean rag - t shirt material works the best. You can also use rubbing compound, rubbing alcohol, or even a product called "Awesome" when the paint is still fairly soft. And no my son was pretty happy that I fixed up this wreck for him. Merry Christmas to you and your family Ray 🎄
So, what exactly is "pearl" is it a modified clear coat of some sort?
That's what it looks like to me - like a clear basecoat with some type of metallic flakes in it. Good question SGS :)
Looks very good! You are a very good teacher on how to do this, but i have one question how long do you have to let it flash in between coats? Thanks again for your video.
Sorry - I forgot to mention that. It was around 90 degrees that day so for the base and pearl it was about 5-10 minutes. Let that dry for about 1/2 hour to an hour then cleared it. I like to make sure the base is dry before clear just to make sure it doesn't effect the metallic flakes.
@@LakesideAutobody Found your answer to my question. Good Video.
@@raypilot510 Good to hear 😊
That looks expensive, if you don’t mind what does a paint job like that cost?
This was a repair but I imagine the cost to paint a car with tri coat would be quite expensive. I don't actually do jobs for other people - like charge money. I just make YT videos using wrecked cars that will be flipped or rusted cars that will be sold. I would expect a paint job today to start at around 1000 and go up from there.
The first one I painted with tri coat was A Cadillac.
How did it turn out?
@@LakesideAutobody It was very nice. Just a cut and buff 1 spot.
No wax and grease remover before painting? You wiped down the whole side with your hand while blowing the dust off. Natural oils from your hand will be on the metal. Looks good but won't hold up.
Still perfect (my sons car) - Never be afraid to touch a panel - you have to. That's all internet talk. All body men and painters touch the panels - your hands are always super clean and dry - it's just good habits that you get used to working in a body shop i.e. don't eat fried chicken, don't change oil while doing body work, etc. There's no oils on your hands while doing body work - promise 👍
Less is always better. Take time and build up.
Great job and tips from you ,just Question what size tip are you using in the gun.
Cheers
Sorry - I'll put that in the description. 1.2mm for the base and pearl coat & 1.4 for the clear.
cheers thanks for that.
@@LakesideAutobody cheers thanks for that,
@@rallygem You're welcome Rallygem - have a good weekend :)
Hand must be dry and oil free. Which most body guys hands at this stage are.
You're right - mine are always bone dry - even sitting here typing they're dryer than a mummy :)
Pearl can act like a metallic so in normal terms can gather like a tiger stripe in basic terms.
You're right :)
I have the car I was gonna paint ready to paint it now just got to wait after this garage sale done my parents garage. Been thinking about leaving my job now once I move I had a dream this year was in Utah. Was thinking about going there if don't move to place in Michigan. I never had a dream that I was actually in that state but it did happen this year. I just don't see me being at the job now too much longer am 43 and have been through about 20 something jobs in my life. I actually wanna be doing what God really wants me to do whatever it is. I know I like auto painting a lot but I don't know if that is what God really want me to do. In my head retiring came up in my head in the last two weeks. Retiring from working for someone else I been wanting to work for myself about 8 to 10 years now though. Whether I really end up in another state or being in Michigan I just see me leaving my job now soon. I know one thing now I do have a lot of automotive products now and auto detailing stuff also. I ordered some candy concentrate on Ebay and that is coming July 12 but when I do paint this car I plan on putting a video for it though. Eventually though I will need to rent a paint booth out one day when I paint. I got a camera stand now I got it from work it was trash so took it home plus a thing that I can use to put masking paper on they through more out in the summer where I work at cleaning at. Sometimes metal also.
Keep walking forward my friend. Try something and if after you've given it your best and it hasn't worked for you, that's God's way of guiding you to what he really want's you to do. It's not failure, it's just God saying, "The other way fella!" Hope everything works out for you my friend - always feel free to ask questions. One thing you mentioned was auto detailing. Now that is a career that can make some $ - you can do it out of your home too - be your own boss :)
@@LakesideAutobody for now I still like auto painting and detailing I was into bowling before had did it about 20 years but compared to painting a vehicle it's not liked that much plus I put more money into painting than when I bowled I am actually better with my bowling glove on this year when I bowled did 170 but wasn't using the bowling glove left handed I switched a lot though the way I did it. But I still have to see what will happen in the future because last year I could tell was getting better at auto painting but have looked at a lot of CZcams painting videos since then I look at the Speedkote videos a lot and I see the mistakes I made when watching the videos one was orange peel too much of it. I saw Speedkote painted outside before I did the first time I painted two years ago but rather paint in a garage or paint booth now. The paint booth would have to be down the road for me though I don't know where to rent a paint booth month to month at.
easy, UNLESS, you got to do a partial, or blend. you stop 1 coat light on pearl, then clear & it hopefully matches, if coated to what you thought matches, then cleared, it was always to dark, some cars took 2-3 coats, and if been overall painted, you never knew, as it was interpretation, how wet each previous pearl coat was, so you have to try to match, fun times, I was working at a Cadillac dealer with tri coat pearl white early to mid 1990's also was still in suction gun Binks 007 back then
You're right - it's probably best to spray a few test panels with 1-2-3-4 coats of pearl and see which one matches best. I took a gamble and went with a couple coats - I figured why would the factory spray more than what's necessary. Have a good weekend Randy - thanks for the input :)
He was using matrix, that stuff usually matches really well for me in 2 coats.
I did a buick regal and it needed the 3rd coat. I was able to sorta hide the blend in creased areas. But it wasn't matrix
