👉 Tesla Coil: miniature low current version of the famous air core double-tuned resonate transformer invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891. The thick copper of the primary coil is set into three windings around the many windings of the tall secondary coil. This one uses a modern transistor circuit to excite the radio frequency oscillations that produce a voltage in excess of 50kV in the form of pulses that cycle about 100k times a second.
👉 Gas Collection for Emission Spectra: pure samples of hydrogen, nitrogen and five noble gasses are subjected to the high frequency pulsed field of a miniature Tesla coil. Each gas has a characteristic breakdown voltage and emission spectrum- note that Nitrogen has the highest breakdown voltage and only glows when very near the coil where the field is most intense whereas Neon and Helium have the lowest breakdown voltage and begin to glow many centimeters away from the coil. The color of each gas is due to a mix of the colors emitted from electron energy transitions specific to each element- the basis of spectroscopy.
👉 Switch Pitch Ball: this spherical assembly changes color by turning inside out when tossed into the air. The ball is made of multiple components hinged together. In launching the ball from the hand an upward acceleration results in a torque that pivots each component around its center of mass, causing the rotation of these components in an organized way leading to the transformation.
👉 Scrap Metal Kinetic Sculpture: a bent spring becomes a coupled harmonic oscillator with two modes of oscillation, one along a horizontal direction and one at an angle. As the kinetic energy trades back and forth between these two modes the end of the spring traces out a Lissajous curve (revealed by a white LED) which gets smaller in size each cycle as friction dissipates energy from the system. The full beauty of this motion is captured by recording the light traced using the Slow Shutter Cam App which unveils the nested family of curves.
👉 Dual Axis Sand Pendulum: the kinetic energy trades back and forth between swinging toward the support arm and then swinging perpendicular to that path tracing Lissajous figures in the sand.
👉 Polage Display: art with polarized light using polarizing sheets and cellulose to create changing forms and colors. Rotation of the filter allows the artist to produce colorful metamorphosis. The colors in polage come from how the molecular structure of plastics can rotate the polarization of any light that passes through- but only light corresponding to yellows and greens gets rotated in plastic, reds and blues not so much.
👉 Tautochrone Curve: has the special property that the time it takes for an object to slide to the bottom of it under gravity is the same no matter how high it starts up the curve. Also, the time it takes is always equal to pi times the square root of the cycloid radius divided by g. Presented here are three instances of two spheres being released at the same time, and each time they reach the bottom and collide at the center.
    👉 Anamorphic Business Card
👉 Double Pendulum: chaotic motion from a simple assembly of two physical pendulums (one attached to the end of the other) with the energy of the system moving frenetically back and forth between the potential energy of gravity to the kinetic energy of motion.
👉 Chaos as Art: The intricate path of a chaotic pendulum traced by a UV diode on to a phosphorescent screen in slow motion.
    👉 The Klein Bottle
    👉 Oil Drop Timer

Definitely the different gasses, but are they at a higher/lower pressure? And does the high voltage being AC make it glow better? I tried it with pulse DC at atmospheric pressure and it didn't really work. I could imagine the AC transferring through the glass as it basically is a capacitor

I love the double pendulum😍😍..the reason for the knot is due to the rotation of the ring beyond 90°, the lower ends of the chain are elongated sideways. Therefore, there is now also a restoring force component tangential to the ring. If it overcomes the frictional forces, the two ends of the chain can slide from the lower end of the ring upwards on each side of the ring. Once they make it to the middle of the ring, the knot can form

It helps to know that the spring forces between elements of the slinky are local. And you should note that the system was in equilibrium just before release. From there you should be able to deduce the behavior of each part of the slinky in the instant of release. And for the "next" moment and so on... It is worth thinking this through. -
