At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors. “One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.” Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator. He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years. “Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.” Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry. I lived for most of my life in the Netherlands… one of my friend’s father was a falconer… I will never forget the first time I came to their house… entering the mudroom, there where a couple of Hawks and Falcons perched … My friend knew all of them by name… they also had a barn owl that was perched in the living room on the same kind of sealed perched , that Martin showed us towards the end… … the birds were indeed part of the family… I was about 8 or 9 years old… I loved it… and it’s still a vivid memory , 60 years later…
The more I talk to other falconers, especially long-time falconers, the more I learn that not everyone views their falconry birds as utilitarian objects. I have a two-times intermewed passage red-tail whom I consider very much part of my family, and as you mentioned in your video, there is no need for re-manning my bird in the fall as she is handled multiple times a day every day. I very much prefer it this way! Like you said, there is always something to be gained by watching and learning from other falconers. Thanks for making these videos.
You talk about having a falcon and a dog in the same house. Does this work with smaller breeds of dogs like chihuahuas or would you constantly need to make sure the falcon isn't a risk (e.g. leashed) to your other household animal friends? Can the falcons bond to dogs the same way they bond to humans?
I love and enjoy your work really. in France we have a scandal... a company who used to "train" and "educate" wildlife for movies or ads (including raptors)? has several complaints because in a video their CEO was seen punching severely a bald eagle 😡🤬. his face was hidden but in an interview he recognised it was him who did that. He dared to say that even if it's shocking it was necessary to calm down the eagle 😢😡. there are other complaints about the animals condition of life (including wolves bears etc). I hope this POS lose his license and his company is closed 😡. thanks for the great video 🌺
