    It is truly wonderful to see young people find appreciation for the music I discovered when I was a mere 14 years old in 1976. I bought ELO's album "A New World Record" based on hearing "Living Thing" and "Telephone Line" on the radio. It blew me away.
    Then in '77 "Out of the Blue" dropped and I wasted NO time getting my allowance and hitting the record store to buy it only to find out it was a double album (no internet back then) and cost more than I had. I was gutted so, I rushed home and begged Mum for the rest of the money. It was a great decision. "Out of the Blue" blew me away as well.
    Side three "Concerto for a Rainy Day" was worth the price alone.
    "A New World Record" and "Out of the Blue" Jeff Lynne was at the peak of his powers (IMO).
    I bought three copies of each of those albums over the years because I bloody wore the buggers out playing them so much.😁

      I'm with you friend. When I was 25, I saw them in 1978 for the Out of the Blue tour in Kansas City and again in 1981 for the Time tour in Denver. Excellent concerts. Been a fan for most of my life. Check out The Traveling Wilburys if you haven't already. Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan.

    A concerto is a piece of music with five movements. When you listened to Standin' in the Rain you listened to the first movement (that cut off about 10 seconds too soon). This is the second movement (that started about 10 seconds to soon). The concerto is really meant to be listened straight through. The third movement is Thunder and Lightning and the fourth and fifth movements are usually played together as Mr. Blue Sky which ends with the vocodor voice stating "Please turn me over." The is because the concerto was one whole side (#3) of an LP disc and one had to turn the record over to play the last side of the album (2 discs, 4 sides).

    During their “classic years,” ELO used a full orchestra and choir along with typical rock instruments and innovative use of keyboards. It’s funny how new generations discovering them feel the sound is groundbreaking. I've been told by young listeners that they've never heard anything like them before.
    Under “Jeff Lynne’s ELO” (Lynne being the band’s mastermind), they toured sold out UK and American area tours from 2015 until Covid when they had to cancel their planned 2020 UK tour, like all other bands. Hopefully, they will try again for late 2023 / early 2024.

    You should do the whole 'Concerto As A Rainy Day' in one review... the tracks just blend into one another. If you want to be blown away... do a reaction on 'Tightrope'! Just one recommendation... These tracks are best listened through headphones - you'll hear a lot more Jeff Lynne production throughout, try this on your reactions. Keep up the ELO guys!

  • @stevenpatti3730
    @stevenpatti3730 Před rokem +5

    Back in the mid to late 70's, starting with their 4th album, ELO albums used a full 30 piece orchestra and choir (including "Concerto For A Rainy Day" on the Out Of The Blue Album) but had only 2 cellist and 1 violinist on stage during live performances. On the studio recordings, synthesizers were never used during that time to artificially create the sounds of strings but to create very unique effects to augment the actual orchestra.

    When you said you could see yourself fall asleep to this, you hit a nerve as I had this double album in High School and fell asleep many night listening to this side of the album. It’s beautiful and puts you in a mood for relaxation yet they are amazing songs. This was created just as synths came into being but there was a real orchestra playing in most of their albums. This included. You can hear the keyboard synths towards the end of the song. They are still producing songs. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. Still touring as well.

    In response to the speakers. Yes, Jeff Lynne/ELO is using a hired orchestra. During live concerts they depended more on two cellists and a single violinists. When Jeff Lynne began ELO (with Roy Wood and Bev Bevan) first started, they struggled with getting enough volume from the cellos and violins during live concerts. Today, that is not as big a problem. Also, when they began studio recordings they increased volumen by redubbing the string sections.

    Strictly speaking, "Midi" wasn't a thing until the early 80's. There was some analog sequencing being used before, but most things involved laying down instruments, synths (including early sequencers) & effects to audio tape. These could then be manipulated further through applying additional filters, splicing, looping, etc.

    I think there have been other comments regarding the sound. Now it's not too important that we hear the music perfectly as viewers, but it is important that you are. One thing I noticed here is a moving shadow that looke like a ceiling fan, and I thought the movement seemed synchronised with some of the noise, so maybe there is some electronic noise from your fan. Also, I think it would be nice if you placed the camera so that you both are equally far away from it. I do like that you leave the video in a smaller picture-in-picture - some reacteurs do the opposite, but as a viewer who knows the music, I'm actually more interested in seeing you and you reaction. That being said, if you feel a need to express your reaction with more than one or two words, pause the video or stop it and go back a bit, otherwise you'll miss all that happens in the song while you are talking. Or make a note of the time and your thought and return to it after heariiing the whole song.

    Jeff Lynne was inspired by the Beatles music especially the Beatle albums of 1967 to 1969 albums. You can hear elements from Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, White Album, Let It Be and Abbey Road in ELO's music. Indeed, Jeff Lynne's vocal style is similar to John Lennon on many songs.

    It's great that you guys are diving into ELO, but you're cheating yourselves out of a proper audio experience. It sounds like you're just listening to the songs out of the tiny speaker(s) on your laptop. If so, that's gotta stop. Get component speakers with a subwoofer on the floor, or, get proper headphones. Even high fidelity buds would be much better than your current setup. So get on that ASAP, top priority. And turn that ceiling fan off, too. Next from ELO, I recommend you react to their 1976 classic, *"Tightrope".* To many diehard fans, it is *the quintessential* ELO song.
