Fernando was a soldier. A freedom fighter. Probably during the Mexican or Spanish/American war. And though his side lost, they would fight for freedom all over again. Abba has always been my guilty pleasure. Thanks for this reaction! 😊 👍 ❤

The song is about 2 old Mexican revolutionaries reminiscing about the past.
ABBA ( Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid “ Frida “) is a band from Sweden who were initially active from 1972-1982. The Name comes from the 4 members initials. They were 2 married couples but both marriages ended in divorce in the late 70’s / early 80’s. Their big break came from winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with Waterloo. Benny wrote the music and Bjorn wrote the lyrics, Agnetha and Frida share lead lead vocals but the magic happens when they sing together “The 3rd Voice of ABBA”. They have sold over 400 million albums worldwide. Their music is the bases for the musical Mamma Mia and the 2 films Mamma Mia ! (2008) and Mamma Mia Here we go again (2018). They were approached a few years ago to put on new concerts using digital versions of themselves as they were in the 1970’s and as a result of this they decided to record a couple of new songs to be performed as well as their older hits. They enjoyed recording them so much that they decided to do a new album called Voyage which was released on 5th Nov 2021 almost 40 years after their last Album The Visitors and has sold over 2.5 million so far. I suggest you listen to the Greatest Hits Album entitled ABBA GOLD which was 1st album to spend 1,000 weeks on the UK charts enjoying 3 spells at number 1 (1992, 1999 & 2008) and today it is still in the charts. but also listen to their Album songs and b sides because they contain many a hidden gems many that could have been singles.

'Fernando' was about two old freedom-fighters from the Mexican Revolution. It is one of fewer than forty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.

I grew up with all the fabulous music from the 60's - 80's. ABBA was one of my favorites. They had lots of hits & I owned many of their albums. I can't think of a bad song by them. Some of their best are "Thank You For The Music", "Does Your Mother Know?", "Waterloo", "Money, Money, Money", "The Name Of The Game", "Super Trouper", "I Have A Dream", "Voulez-Vous", "Take A Chance On Me", "Mamma Mia", "SOS", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Dancing Queen" etc. Nice to see that they are back together again recording after all these years.

so happy to see you return with ABBA songs
    "Fernando" (1976)
is a soft ballad, so nice and beautiful
The best is the beauty of their vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection, that explodes in a magic chorus
I have compared it to "Chiquitita" (1979) because both songs have similarities and contrasts
Both have the title in Spanish, and was recorded in spanish too (to the album in spanish "Gracias por la Música" In 1980)
Both are pop ballads with an initial verse sung alone and from the second chorus in duet, with a very catchy and popular chorus (in my country Argentina are songs that we would sing in a circle of friends, because we all know their lyrics)
The two videos show the contrast of fire and snow, night and day
They were both very most worldwide successful, only behind "Dancing Queen"
ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía"
It was the manager who convinced them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style
(Frida had done it before in 1975 on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success, but with lyrics of a lovesong, and these to ABBA is a friendship story about mexican soldiers)
The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in that year 1976,
with three singles #1 consecutives in UK
    Mamma Mía (2 weeks)
    Fernando (4 weeks)
    Dancing Queen (6 weeks)
In addition, this variety of options had different results in each country.
"Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks at #1 surpassed the "Hey Jude" mark) and 7 weeks at #1 in Germany
"Dancing Queen" was 14 weeks #1 in Sweden and 6 weeks #1 in the U.K.and 8 weeks #1 in Australia
Both were #1 in the U.S. but in various rankings: "Dancing Queen" on the Billboard and
    "Fernando" on Adult Contemporary
The official video of "Fernando" was filmed in February 1976, with Dancing Queen the next day
in these Official Video you could see:
Bjorn & Benny, both in guitars
Frida & Agnetha confronted both in frontal and profile images (repeating "Mamma Mia" technique used) premiering her gypsy style dress
    and a last comparation
"Fernando" (1976) is first ABBA single with Frida in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released before ABBA)
as "S.O.S." (1975) is first ABBA single with Agnetha in lead voice, and recorded in her solo album in Swedish (released after ABBA)
For a next reaction, my suggestion is
    "S.O.S." (1975)
the second worldwide hit to ABBA
first of their 18 singles Top10 consecutives in UK between 1975/1982
Thanks so much for these video and reaction
I wish you a great week
    See you in the next
    My best regards from

'Those two dudes' were far from just along for the ride - they wrote and arranged all Abba's songs, as well as playing and singing on them. 🙂
Others have explained about the theme of this song - not exactly a song about an old lover, but two older people sharing wartime memories from their youth. If you listen again, tune into the lyrics more or read them first, and you'll understand the story better.
Since you love Abba, I have a movie recommendation for you to react to, or watch for your own pleasure. A little Aussie gem called Muriel's Wedding. A much, much better film all round than that awful saccharine thing with Meryl Streep in it (sorry, Meryl, probably not your fault..). I know you will fall in love with the social misfit Muriel, whose at first pretty hopeless life is elevated only by romantic daydreams of getting married and the music of Abba. Clever script, great acting from Toni Collette in the lead role and her friend played by Rachel Griffiths, with a fantastic supporting cast. You will laugh, you will cry, etc....get out the popcorn and enjoy... 🙂

Some people need to learn what reaction channels are and that if they just play copyrighted songs all the way through without interruption they risk copyright infringement penalties, including getting their channel taken down if enough violations occur. By inserting their own additional commentary and critiques at intervals throughout the song they can avoid such penalties.
By the way, the two “dudes” singing in the back were the two girls husbands. Both couples later divorced but continued performing. The name ABBA came from the first letter of each member’s first name: Agnetha, Bjorn, Bennie and Anni-Frid.

Abba started off as a Folk Rock group following the traditions of "Swedish Schlager" - simple songs with a folk sentimentality. But having been bought up in the 1960's the revolution of Rock n Roll heavily influenced their style.
They would later master Glam Rock, Disco and power ballads.
Benny & Bjorn principally wrote and performed the music but they did sing a lot more on their earlier albums. Bjorn's last solo vocal was the smash "Does Your Mother Know" from 1979.

When they had a hit, most groups would try and copy it with a similar song to recapture the feelings from the listeners. ABBA was just the opposite, in that the guys who wrote the songs would go out of their way to be sure that all their songs didn’t sound the same. They had the most varied style of music of anyone, and yet they all had a distinct sound to them, simply called the sound of ABBA.
