Wilhelmus van Nassouwe - Netherlands National Anthem English Translation and lyrics

- Wilhelmus van Nassouwe, usually known just as the Wilhelmus (Dutch: het Wilhelmus About this sound pronunciation (help·info); English translation: the William), is the national anthem of the Netherlands and is the oldest national anthem in the world though the words of the Japanese national anthem (not the music) date back to the ninth century.[2] Although it was not recognized as the official national anthem until 1932, it has always been popular with parts of the Dutch population and resurfaced on several occasions in the course of Dutch history before gaining its present status.[3]
Like many anthems, the Wilhelmus originated in the nation's struggle to achieve independence. It tells of Willem van Oranje (William of Orange), his life and why he is fighting against the King of Spain.[4] As a result, the anthem is written in a first person perspective, as if it were sung by William himself. William of Orange being the I-figure (Early Modern Dutch "ick") in the 1st stanza "Den Coninck van Hispaengien heb ick altijt gheeert" ("I have always honoured the King of Spain"). It was also the anthem of the Netherlands Antilles from 1954-1964.
This refers to the initial loyalty of the leading figures of the Dutch Revolt, the Counts of De Montmorency ("Hoorne") and Lamoral ("Egmond") who both were executed, and the then surviving Prince of Orange (William), to the Spanish King Philip II and their claim that they merely objected against some hardships of the Spanish rule over The Netherlands. These objections were especially concerning the taxation, political oppression and the religious prosecutions.
The text and tune of the song are remarkably peaceful for a national anthem. The Wilhelmus derives its name from the first word of the song; the Geuzenliedboek's original introduction to the text speaks of "a new Christian song" ("Een Nieu Christelick Liedt").
Netherlands and Germany. one of the Germanic brothers :)
I love Netherlands
Greetings from Germany :D
We love Germany!
+Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Yep, the person who subtitled this shit is a total idiot. He says that he is from German blood, not Dutch. Wilhelmis lived in Germany for a while and had family overthere.
That's partly true. William did live there. But in Old Dutch Duitsen means Dutch. It cannot be German blood, because Germany didn't exist when the song was written. So it could never be of German Blood.
Bart Mandigers Fine, Prussia. if you want to be specific
And we love Germany!
Greeting from the Netherlands.
Most beautiful anthem in the world, greetings from Spain.

You will always be welcome in our country 🇳🇱
Much love to The Netherlands, from a Spaniard.
Even when it's actually a protest song against (old) Spain?
+Kawaii Lukiie Yes let our pasts remain there.
+YaBoiCasillas that's a beautiful statement
You need to know the whole song.
Because they never wanted to disobbey the King of Spain, as it is stated in the Bible to be obedient to the rulers that are reigning over you. But because of the persecution of the protestant religion they had no choice but to rise up against the inquisition!
Rest in peace Johan, the greatest player ever; love to Netherlands from France!

Lovely anthem. I am so fascinated by the commonalities between Norwegian and Dutch. I translated the parts that is most similiar to Norwegian. I'm mixing Bokmål and nynorsk, so it's not "pure", but I choose the words most close to Dutch. I guess I got a lot of free time. :P I really need to learn more languages.
Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
ben ik, van Duitsen bloed,
den vaderland getrouwe
blijf ik tot in den dood.
Een Prinse van Oranje
ben ik, vrij, onverveerd,
den Koning van Hispanje
heb ik altijd geëerd.

Wilhelmus fra Nassau
Er eg, av tysk blod,
Tro til faderlandet,
blir eg til døden.
En prins av Oranien
er eg, fri, uredd.
Kongen av Spania
har jeg alltid æret.
Maar God zal mij regeren
als een goed instrument

bidt God nacht ende dag,
dat Hij mij kracht zal geven,

verwacht de jongste dag.

Er deg, O Gud, min Herre
Van al die mij bezwaren
en mijn vervolgers zijn,
...
Fra alle de meg besværer
Og er mine forfulgere
Als David moeste vluchten
voor Sauel de tiran,
zo heb ik moeten zuchten
als menig edelman.
Maar God heeft hem verheven,
verlost uit alle nood,
een koninkrijk gegeven
in Israël zeer groot.
...
Slik David måtte flykte
For Saul, tyrannen
Så har eg måttet sukke
som mange adelsmenn
Men Gud hevet ham
Forløste all nød
Et kongerike gjeve
I Israel svært stort
met ere in dat veld,
een eeuwig rijk verwerven
als een getrouwe held.
...
Med ære i felten
Et evig rike erverve
Som en trofast helt
De Heer heb ik gebeden
uit mijnes harten grond,
dat Hij mijn zaak wil redden,
mijn onschuld maken kond.
...
Herren har eg bedt
Ut fra mitt hjertes grunn
At han min sak vil redde
Min uskyld kunngjøre

+Sperwerhavik I zeker weten :D
+Sperwerhavik I Well we all speak Germanic, language of the People :D
Yeah they're both Germanic languages, I find that even though they're quite similar families North Germanic and West Germanic are to a certain extent mutually intelligible when written. I'm Dutch learning Danish and it's surprisingly easy because of the similar words and sounds.
Well, if you listen to ThDubya's parody, Dutch IS considered a blended language of German, Norwegian, and English, and quite hard to comprehend. LOL! :P
Long live Netherlands from Turkey
Furkan Kayhan well, guess that opinion isnt really shared anymore
Greetings from Finland! Awesome anthem ^^
The oldest national anthem... im proud for my country to make history
The most beautiful national anthem, in my opinion.
It's actually a lot longer, there is one couplet for every letter in Willem van Nassua

One of the most beautiful anthems from Europe! And so international! I love the Netherlands!
Salam L3OPARD,
Yes, I had a very nice encounter in your country, I never had before in Europe. Once my wife and I wanted to visit somebody in a small town. We arrived by train and wanted to get to our hotel we booked before. On the way we asked somebody how to go to our hotel... He told us,. but then he asked to wait for him and he came out with his car to drive us there! That is something before I thought you only can have in North Africa or Middle East or may be South East Asia.

Beautiful anthem
I am curious to anybody who might know. But does putting the hand over your heart when singing an anthem come from this? Especially the part about the piercing of the heart, I imagined people would then have placed their hands over their hearts as a gesture during that verse. Does that gesture appear before this?
Beautiful anthem, greetings from Brazil
Congratulations for your national holiday today Netherlands from your friends in Germany
Koningsdag. We have a king now.
This anthem makes me tear up every damn time and I'm not even Dutch
The fact that it's in first person is really neat.
what is the correct translation of "duitsen bloed"? Isn't it german?! Or do you have to put it in context?
There is no context, it is supposed to be German blood
Amazing anthem! Love from the US!
God Bless Nederland Van Poland 👍
Please can you answer me why they said the king of spain ?
because Spain used to control the Fatherland (dutch) dim wit idiot person man
Good timing ;-)
Duitsen is old dutch..... jeez guys get your facts straight....
In the national anthem it's still Duitsen.
Lars Feitz And duitsen is old dutch for dutch
+Jesse Wouda No for German. he was born in Nassou in Germany
+Lars Feitz still that has nothing to do with the anthem. Lars please i'm a historian......
Jesse Wouda I'm just saying that Duitsen not dutch means.
our (the dutch) anthem is so old. its easier to understand the Enlgish translations then the old school Dutch words used.
yep
+Fishroad old Dutch is more German than Dutch I suppose xD
+arisoda no not realy :D
harige haring nee
arisoda german grammar dutch words
"Vroom" actually means pious in this context, since the last stanza is dedicated to God. Granted, Dutch is no easy language and you did a terrific job nonetheless.
Another fun fact: These are only stanza one and six of the entire anthem. The sixth stanza isn't used a lot anymore these days and only a few people know it by heart. But, if you take the first letters of each stanza, it spells out WILLEMVANNASSOV, which is the German version of Willem van Nassau (William of Nassau).
Our anthem always gives me shivers ^^
De prinse van Oranje should be translated to The prince of Oranje, because it's a name and you don't translate those. Also, you chose a very old version sang like it was sang in a church
Niels Ruitenbeek Um, then wouldn't names like Spain and Germany in English be España and Deutschland, because they're names.
Я остался в месяц в Нидерландах, и это было удивительно. Я надеюсь что часто вернуться.
+Александр Иванович Nice to hear, where have you been in the Netherlands?

translation is wrong, it's I am of German blood, not Dutch blood
its not Duitse (German) but Duitsen, and Duitsen is in english lyrics Dutch
No, Duitsen is old dutch for 'Dutch'
Are you for fucking real?
Dutch= Ancient-Roman, Scandinavian, French, German, English, Italian (A lil' bit) and ofcourse a flavour of original Dutch Dialect added.
+Zephyrion Stelios Stop Crying you netherlandes. It's Getman blood, the term Dutch is old english term teferi g to Germans. The name "German" is new term derived from latin who got introduced in later english. IT SAY IT CLEARARLY GETMAN BLOOD. And I don't understand what is the problem with it. Even dutch language it is considered by linguistics more likely than german dialect than seperate language
hey guys, can someone please explain to me the part that talks about the spanish king?! thanks
The Netherlands used to be one of the Spanish-owned territories. The national anthem is sung in 'first person', from the view of William of Orange, the leader of our war for independence. In the song, he explains why he has started this revolutionary war, and in the first stanza he says he "has always honoured the king of Spain", but in the rest of the anthem he explains why he will fight him regardless of that fact. For example, the tenth stanza reads:
That you are molested by the Spaniards,
O Noble Netherlands sweet,
when I think of that,
my noble heart bleeds.
Man that's so beautiful! thank you so much for replying. Highly apreciated. Respect and greetings from Palestine :)
Willem van Oranje (William of Orange) used to be a friend of Filips II, but the Spanish king wanted to kill everyone in The Netherlands who wasn't Roman-Catholic. Willem van Oranje wanted to stop him, so he chose to defend the Dutch people and he chose their side.
Just to add a bit to the answer of Fred. It is indeed sung from the point of view of William of Orange. Something you have to understand about the position of the king at that time is that he is god's representative on earth. So if you revolt against your king you're also revolting against god. He continues to explain that he only has problems with the regent in the Low Countries and the policies the regent implemented but that he has no problems with the spanish king.
Wow, you guys are simply amazing. Thank you so much :)

Duitsen means German not Dutch, if you mean Dutch you should've written Dietsen.
+NF15 Another typo was in the end: "die mij mijn hert doorwondt", but is should be: "die mij mijn hart doorwondt".
+Elder Scrolls online
You are correct, it is supposed to be written like that but said as is written here. Since not all Dutch people know how to correctly pronounce the old Dutch language. Maybe that's why it's like that?
It's of German Blood because our Hero William of Orange was Born in The Holy Roman Empire (Germany)

"Ben Ik van Duitsen bloed" doesn't meen I'm from Dutch blood, but German blood :P
It meant Dutch at the time this was written.

Fun fact: this song was written almost 500 years ago by william of orange, he created it as a song for the rebellion for the indipendence of the dutch from the spanish ;)

I love the netherlands. My grandpa (1912-1987) came from the netherlands, Amersvoort, Utrecht. I'm from germany. But i'm proud of my dutch ancestry. Too bad, i've never met my grandpa. Ik hou van nederland. (I hope it was spelled correctly). Much greetings to our fantastic friends in the netherlands, from germany.
Greetings from Indonesia. Your former colony
It has two meanings in Old Dutch. Duitsen is german or Nederlands back in 16th century. It says Duitsen, not Duitsens. But since Wilhelm von Naussau was from what now is called Germany, it's safe to assume it refers to him and therefore the germanic people since they conquered us. So did the spanish by the way.
Jack McDutch the spanish never conquered you, the hapsburgs were ur rulers THEN became rulers of spain and after a fashion you rebeled against them, mainly due to the religious issues with philipp II
This anthem is very unique, it isn't just about the land itself but about the others as well such as spain, france etc. love from asia!
@@loddfafnir6111 thnx for the knowledge, and my bad. i think i misunderstood something which is why i added france.
00:09 seconde in and already a mistake. Duitsen is Not dutch but german. Get your lyrics correct pls.
Excellent! 🇳🇱 👏🏻
Colonisation intesifies...
"duits" actually can mean both durch and german because in the 16th century when this text was wrote it had the meaning of "continental west germania" or so, with other words "duits" belonged to the area where today the Netherlands and Germany are. But since Nassau-Dillenburg is in Germany (Hessen) the proper translation in this context is "german"
wow!
"A prince of Orange am I, Free and Fearless"
Lyrics from the new American national anthem, to be introduced later this year.
haha ha
Oohhh thst a good song ever
0:11 Already a translation mistake in the 1st verse...
what does it mean by "a prince of orange"
That is the name of our royal family.
Nassau is where he was born, and Orange is a piece of land he owned (if I remember my history lessons correctly).
MrSem IsAwesome It's quite literal, actually, the Princes of Oranje did wear a lot of Orange.
Respect!
Sweet ever
the starting part kinda sounded like it is talking about the flag
This song refers to Willem van Oranje, he was also a bit German besides Dutch.

The Hapsburgs ruled over the Netherlands.
Excuse my ignorance, because in the national anthem of Netherlands, they praise the king of Spain ?
That is because for many centuries, the Netherlands belonged to the Spanish Monarchy.

I don't understand what's the relation between Netherlands and king of Spain
That is because for many centuries, the Netherlands belonged to the Spanish Monarchy.

0:10 wrong, it says 'Am I, of German blood'.
I still can't pronounce any of these words...but great anthem
This comment section is great! We Dutch love you too, nations of the world!
I'm from Finland. Funny word this geëerd, what does it mean? It has three "e's" in it :)
I don't speak Dutch at all but it looks similar to the German word "geehrt", meaning "honoured". And since both Dutch and German are kind of similar I think it might mean the same.
there is one thing and only one thing that comes to mind when hearing the Netherlands national anthem.

respects from spain!
The original is 15 couplets. This is only 1 and 6.
yea
Why are they singing in German? Do the dutch speak German?(excuse my ignorance please).
where do you hear German??? maybe the Dutch word for German, which is 'duitse' (at least in the lyrics), but they're not singing in German.
+thatmotherfucker from84 its not duitse as in german , duitse is a old dutch word for DUTCH , its also is where Dutch come from duitse..
I have studies German and I can recognize German, for example they said "Vaterland" which means fatherland in German.....I recognize other words too and it sounds so German(accent-wise)
I am sure they are singing in German,
+Omair Iqbal well I am from Suriname, where they speak Dutch. Plus I live in the Netherlands, where they also speak Dutch. And another thing, the lyrics say 'vaDerland' (which is Dutch), not vaTerland (which is German)....so once again, they're singing in Dutch, not German
+thatmotherfucker from84 Thank you. Now I see.
May God bless all nations that fear Him!
jammer dat de vertaling niet klopt , verder is het wel leuk :)
