Wilhelmus - William - National Anthem of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Koninkrijk der Nederlanden) Written by Unknown Music - Adrianus Valerius - 1626 Adopted - 1932
1:45 / 1:46 We all felt it. You can't deny it. No matter your nationality or thoughts you felt it. One of the most beautiful version of the anthem. Truly beautiful.
Well, that is only because we never get to the part of the anthem where we renounce our allegiance to the king because he became a tyrant. The entire anthem is 15 stanzas long and is about the life and struggles of William the Silent. Because of its length, it is almost never sung in full. In general, we sing only the first stanza, sometimes followed by the 6th such as in this recording.

Actually William of Nassau was repeatedly defeated by the "spanish" armies, which actually were composed by a lot of dutch soldiers, while the armies of William were composed almost only of german mercenaries.
As an Indonesian with half-Dutch blood, this is a real wholesome to me. This also bring tears to my eye, as it reminds me of my Dutch grandfather who passed away 5 years ago on today’s exact date. I love Indonesia, Indonesia is my native land. But I’m also proud of my Dutch heritage. Hidup Indonesia! 🇮🇩 Glorie aan Nederland! 🇳🇱
"The king of Spain I have always honoured!" Must have been awkward for the Dutch to sing that when they faced Spain at the 2010 World Cup Final and 2014 World Cup group stage
lol one time if they won they would go against Germany and if they lost they would go against Spain. Either way their either of German blood or honoring the king of Spain lol
Tim van Dooren just wondering. Please, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Spain used to rule the Netherlands and they gained their independence from them sometime in the 16th century. Why would the Dutch want to hail the Spanish King, who was formerly their overlord, if they are an independent nation? Please don't take any misinformation on my part as an offence if there is any?
William Hammann It's a little bit like Willem's happy little fight Song. He was loyal to the Spanish King but still got fucked over...so now he's basically up to kick their asses
OK, so our national anthem needs the line "I have always honored the king of Denmark". Same timeframe, similar situation. Btw, Kristian the Tyrant of Denmark was married to Philip II's aunt.
I felt the anthem because of Spanish Colonization of the Philippines for 333 years and it symbolizes the fight and resilience of the Dutch against Spanje
Mr. Bonkers Always! We study the Netherlands a lot in the US, specifically Dutch resistance in WWII. Y’all are heroes. Definitely want to visit one day!
It may seem strange that the line "Den Koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd" ("I have always honoured the King of Spain") is so important in our national anthem. Why should the Dutch not prioritize their own national pride over their respect to any other country, particularly the country that occupied us and made us suffer for 80 years? Because it is part of our national identity. We've always been a small, but proud country. We pay our respect to bigger countries, and give them their due; but we won't back down on our own national interests. Even in a situation of warfare - which it evidently was when this song was written - we won't give in to hatred, or despisal of our enemies, or of their own national authority - but we will defend out own interests no matter what. That courage, such pride, this self-determination. It strikes me every time I hear our anthem. The sentiment will go a long way.
Although I agree with the sentiment that tolerance and respect for different cultures is to some extent part of our national identity, the reference to the King of Spain in our anthem has to my understanding a very different reason. As you may know the verses sung in this video are just the first and the sixth verses, the full song has fifteen verses. All of them are written from the point of view of William of Orange himself and are mostly about William declaring to God that he has always been just a good Christian noblemen, and asking God to help his people (look up the full version or a translation of it if you are interested and unfamiliar with it). You see, back in 1570 (when this anthem was written) kings were considered to be the bridge between God and the people; a king would be given the 'divine right' to rule, and in return the king has to rule his country in an honorable way according to Gods rules. If the king is loyal to God, God protects his people, if he doesn't he punishes them. This means that when you don't have a king anymore because you have revolted (which is what the Dutch did under Williams leadership) you are no longer protected by God, which is a bit of a problem especially when your enemies (the Spanish) do still have a king and therefore still have God's protection. This song is about William pleading to God that his people still deserve God's protection because they are still good Christians even though they no longer want to be ruled by the King of Spain. Of course according to the same logic, as the King of Spain was appointed king by God, revolting against the King would be considered revolting against God. That is why in their declaration of independence (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe in Dutch or Act of Abjuration) William and the Dutch people declared that it was not them who betrayed their King, it was the King who betrayed them by being a tyrant. It was not the sheep (the people) who rebelled against their shepherd (the king), it was the shepherd who abandoned his sheep. Therefore it is the King of Spain who should be punished by God, not the Dutch people. That is why in this song, William sings "I have always remained loyal to the King of Spain", it is a way of saying "I have never questioned you, God, but your appointed king has betrayed us, so please help us." Somewhat related to this, if you're interested: the idea that you don't need a king to live under God's protection was somewhat revolutionary and was the founding principle of the first modern republic, the Dutch Republic. The success of the Dutch Republic in holding its own against the monarchies around it caused republican ideas to spread, ultimately gave inspiration for both the French and the American Revolution.
