      It is tough to deal with. I agree! I was bumming when I had to use it, but it isn’t that noticeable with all the other fabrics. It will probably still bug me. 😂

  • @janiesoito4494

    This is my favorite way to make 4 patches. I had a quilt kit with layer cakes. The directions said to cut about half of them into charms and then sew them into 4 patches. I side stepped that plan and did them this way. They come out so straight and even. I love this quilt both ways you had it laid out. I wouldn't trim the "on point" layout. I would add setting triangles. He'll love it either way. ❤

      @julias.8236 Před 10 měsíci +2

      That was exacly my thought as well. You also can make it a little bigger with the set in triangles. But it looks nice and cozy in both directions.

    As much as I love this quilt pattern, my eye is always drawn to plaids that are cut crooked. When sizing and cutting prior to sewing the quilt, be mindful of any fabric that has a distinguished pattern like the checkerboards in the flannel pack. Thank you for offering opportunities to experiment with many patterns💖🪡🧵

    Tip from an old sewist: place your pins perpendicular to your sewing path with the heads of the pins extending out past your patches. Your pins will distort your work less, and it’s easy to pull out your pins as you stitch.

    I love this colorway, dusty blue with cream. I would opt for the on-point layout, just because I hardly ever do that and I don't know why - I really do like it, and I would also opt for buying a little extra for the setting triangles; that way you don't have to cut anything off. I usually avoid plaids, and they seem to be very popular now, but the fact that they're almost always crooked bugs me! But it seems that once your blocks were sewn up, the crookedness isn't so obvious.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I already put this together straight, but I am thinking of making another and putting on point. Love the idea of making it with setting triangles. It would add a finished look, I think. The crooked lines are much more noticeable in the quilt, but they tend to bug me, too. I understand completely! Thank you for watching and sharing! ❤️❤️❤️

    Fabrics that have been cut badly really upset me when I put them in my quilt 😳 And it would bother me forever 😳😳 I think that’s why I don’t buy pre-cuts - if anyone from those firms are reading this. Love your quilt 🥰 It’s going to be so snuggly 🤩 Thanks so much for sharing 👏👏🇬🇧

      My pleasure! So true! i am not a huge fan of precuts either for that very reason, but they are super convenient, so that is nice. I completely understand what you are saying, however. It can be so frustrating.

    I usually like the on point blocks, but I think I like the dark and light rows better in this quilt. Thanks for a neat idea for some odds and ends of flannel I’ve been trying to decide how to use.❤️❤️❤️

    Hi Kris, My favorite way to make 4 patches! Layout idea- set blocks on point. What if you cut only the side blocks in half then take those cut offs and use them as the setting triangles to fill in the top and bottom edges. Less waste and longer quilt (I like my feet covered). Based on your picture there would be vertical dark "stripes" and dark edges at the top & bottom.

    I like the on point version better, so I would purchase white fabric to make the triangle points to finish it. That way, you don't need to cut off any of your blocks. Then I'd add a navy border to add to the size. Good luck. 😊

    It was great seeing a new (to me) method for making four-patches. I predict that I will be making blocks this way soon. I rarely buy plaids or other fabrics with obvious lines in the print because crooked lines drive me crazy. I prefer my four- and nine-patches placed as you have them and not on point.

    My son loved the flannel quilt I made him years ago and stilluses it!. But years later he gave me some advice. He said, "Mom, always make a quilt long enough to cover a guy's feet. It needs to go from the neck and down over the feet! I loved that advice - and use it for ALL quilts i make! I've used it ever since. My throw quilts are now always 48 to 60 inches wide and 70 to 80 inches long.
    (I love your on-point version! - cutting the points from the sides only, and using them as setting triangles as someone suggested above. And then maybe purchasing fabric for borders.
    Fun tutorial! Thank you

    I recently made a quilt using Primitive Gatherings flannel. It was fabulous to work with (fat eighths). Used 1/4" seam with no problems. Your quilt will be great. Thanks for the video 😊
    CORRECTION: Quilt washed in cold/dried on low. Had multiple seams that frayed open 😢. I would definitely use a bigger seam allowance (>1/4") in the future even with this high quality flannel. Good thing I'm keeping this quilt.....my repairs leave a lot to be desired. I still love the quilt 😊

    Either layout is fine. Go bigger. If you decide to do on point, use setting triangles instead of cutting off squares. If you go bigger with your current layout, more blocks instead of border would be amazing. It is lovely in its simplicity and the colors look good together.

    I love your quilt and I actually have that layer cake. I'm going to make this; however, I'm going to match 2 different halves together after the first cut / before the 2nd, so that each block has 4 *different fabrics (not 2 of the same 2). It will look more scrappy (which I really like :) because none of the same fabrics will touch.
