  • Conversations with Coaches
I ran into Bucks @nc_buckley about 6 months ago at the airport; we spoke very briefly but I was impressed he approached me given the harsh (& valid) criticism I leveled at his club. To their credit I believe @collingwood_fc have come a long way over the last few years; they still have a way to go dealing with their past & racism - but so does every club, as does the AFL. The conversations I’ve had with members of the office and playing group tells me they’re engaged to do more.
On the eve of the Grand Final that @collingwood_fc would go on to win; we met at Victoria Park and spoke about the importance of the upcoming referendum and why we’re voting Yes. We spoke about the importance of a healthy and free dialogue with Blackfullas & the rest of Australia. We spoke about leadership and what it takes to unite a group of players; the kind of leadership we need as a Nation heading into October 14th.
We’re asking you to listen, be informed & Vote Yes with us.

YES! Come on Australia, we crow about how everyone gets a 'fair go' in this country, well everyone doesn't get a fair go with a NO, it's negative, a backward step, its based on the politics of fear don't be mean spirited this weekend, its time to embrace everyone, all our brothers and sisters as One Nation.

I will be wearing my #Briggs4PM shirt when I vote on Saturday. I will be voting YES as an expression of respect and gratitude to every Aboriginal Australian who has shared their knowledge of Country that I am fortunate to call home. ❤💛🖤💪

I don't identify with Buckley, but at least he's backing the right team with the referendum.

Every mission can be doomed to failure, with any sentence that begins with the two words: 'No, because.'
Every mission can be accomplished, with any sentence that begins with the three words: 'How can we?'
Voting 'Yes' is the only path towards the 'How can we?'

I'm no Aussie, so forgive my ignorance:
    1. What is "The Referendum"?
    2. Is he saying "Black Fellows"?
    3. Is it similar in Australia to say you are "Indigenous", even when you are obviously of mixed-race, as it is in America where we call ourselves "Black" even though we are of mixed race?
    4. What is "three-quarter time"? Is it perhaps referencing Rugby time periods?
I found it very interesting checking him out ever since I hear his "Bad Apples" song. Dope MC. Don't understand the context of everything, but I'm feeling his work.

      1. The Referendum was a Yes or No vote for changing Australia's constitution to insert a voice to parliament for Aboriginal people only - at the request of Aboriginal people. Ostensibly only for making suggestions to government for their own communities, yet requiring it to be written into the constitution of all Australians who can already make representations to government the same as everyone else. It was also to be used simultaneously to give them exclusive recognition in the nation's constitution in this manner for their long presence on the continent before the first Europeans arrived.
      2. He's saying "black fellas", an informal term for Aboriginal people. 'White fellas' is also used. It's a carryover from old colonial Australia days before the founding of modern Australia. Today, the terms are almost exclusively used by Aboriginal people to refer to both themselves and Australians of European ancestry. Haven't heard if they have any racial terms for other 'fellas' in this way.
      3. Yes. Many people with obvious mixed European/Aboriginal heritage choose only to self-identify with one group over the other and focus on representing themselves in public in that way. Many find it offensive if asked how Aboriginal/European they are as they consider this to be a taboo subject.
      4. Yes, three-quarter time here is an Australian rules football (Aussie rules) reference. Nathan Buckley is a former professional Australian rules football coach, player and commentator.
