Internationally-acclaimed architect, Francis Kéré, started with a simple dream: to build a school in his village in Burkina Faso. In 2022, Kéré became the first African winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest honor in the profession. Francine Lacqua speaks to Kéré about his remarkable journey from humble beginnings to the world stage, why sustainable architecture can be both beautiful and affordable, and why he believes the world has become cheap.

Francis is my favourite architect and one of my heroes. Such an inspiring man!
I hope to work with him someday.
Udo nwanne.. I've of my favorites too. We could use some Kéré inspired architects and engineers in the Igbo community.. Also like Miriam Kamara (Niger)... if we could transition to building schools and housing (maybe some hospitals as well) with mud and natural local materials we could use the money saved to invest in other areas like road infrastructure, agriculture, textiles, etc.
@@Afro_Conservative_Strikes_Back yes, brother. I wish to see our people go back and develop our traditional building styles rather than mindlessly copy European architecture.
There are many unique aspects of our architecture that we're missing out on.
Moreover, our native architecture is actually best suited for our climate.
Thank you for the recommendation, I'll definitely check her out. I'm on the lookout for similar architects.
@@ObinnaOkehie are you in school for architecture?
@@Afro_Conservative_Strikes_Back no. I'm just interested in architecture.
But you never know; one day I could decide to get some kind of formal education in architecture.
Thank you, Mr. Francis Kéré, from the land of men and women of integrity. That is the meaning behind the name of his country, Burkina Faso, the country of the legend Thomas Sankara.
I would love for Francis kere to do a documentary.
Kere's architecture is from heaven!
Kwese inspired me to walk back to my home town and ply my training in pharmacy to try and seek our natural plant remedies to drug resistant bacterial infections..I may not get popular like him but his bravery boosted me
Great work and attitude. Inspiring 🎉
Reminds me of Imhotep, hotep to our ancestors. Glory to our ancestors
Respect for this man
Wonderful candid conversation being resilient is key
Really wish he could come back to Burkina Faso and help build. Maybe work with the government to build schools, cheap housing, hospitals, museums, universities, etc.
Like all diasporans everyone wants to help their countries is some way, but our governance Systems resemble scotched earth policy
@@rhythmicnarratives Burkina is building now. Best leadership in Afrika is in the Sahel
@@Afro_Conservative_Strikes_Back They have just changed colonial Master from France to Russia. Build as they may their politics is not sustainable.
Love this guy. Great story teller too. You can feel how much thought he puts into each word. Definitely checking out his work more now
Wow.. Great interview
He's Burkinabe. Burkina Faso is the country. The continent is something else entirely!
😅 Hhh
Genius man
If he were such a genius, he would see how he is being used to cause more division. He is an example of Brain drain by marrying a white wmn. His lineage will be white washed. 12:00
Hello architecture students in Africa
❤❤❤❤❤
Why did she cut him off when he attempted to speak on Brain Drain? He is the epitome of brain drain.
speak good English but using ship instead of cheap, I know he has an accent but he shouldn't act a fool
Your English involves several errors. Let's not uphold Imperialist ideals. He is not an Englishman, don't expect him to sound like one. Also, he speaks at least 4 languages. How many do you speak?
You simple two lines have many errors and all you could pick from his interview is his mistake.
