  • We visited Antwerp in Belgium in December 2023.
Antwerp has a ‘pre metro’ which is made up of tunnels under the city centre and street running in the suburbs. It is provided by De Lijn, the Flemish transport agency.
The first section opened in the 1970s and was extended to Diamant and Plantin in 1980 and Van Eeden in 1990. A further underground route was opened in 1996 with underground stations at Astrid, Elizabeth, Schijnpoort and Sport.
An eastern route was tunnelled but not opened until 1995 (Zegel station). Further station openings along this route are planned.
In our first video from Antwerp we travel east from Van Eeden to Zegel and spot the ghost stations on the eastern axis from the tram.
In our second video we travel from Plantin in the south to Sport in the north-east.
