    Some facts:
0:10: Station Diamant (Centraal Station) is on two levels, this is the upper level direction city centre. Fact: the latter part of the platform has it own screen way in the back, but almost nobody goes there as the trams never stop there. It also has one of the most boring empty mezzanines for a central station.
0:30: Opera station has been renovated the past years (was closed for 2 years), it's a transfer station, access to P+R and is now opened up to the surface, which you can see at 6:20
1:25: Meir station is the most orginal state of the basic line. It's huge because of the pre-metro hype then. Huge in scale, with marble and granit and at the shopping precinct of the city. The pre-metro of Antwerp was never intended to be converted to metro.
2:50: Groenplaats station nearest the cathedral and city hall. Originally it was a terminus/loop as the line ended here. Until in the 90'ties it was considered a brilliant idea to extend it below the Schelde river to the Linkeroever (left bank part) of the city. It's two level station and up for renovation coming years.
3:30: Frederik Van Eeden station, is the first station after the Brabotunnel (nickname of the tramtunnel under the Schelde). The city direction is slightly higher than the opposing tracks as the two seperate bored tunnels aren't at the same level.
6:30: Astrid (Centraal station), It's a transfer station in itself, below a square in front of the Central station. Connected by a complicated set of stairs and long corridors wth the Diamant station.
The first trunk route was constructed in cut-and-cover what resulted in such protest against the disruption on the surface, that the remainder of the network was constructed with bored tunnels. But at the end of the eighties, money ran out. Parts of the bored lines only came in exploitation during the late '90s and in the 2010's. And some parts are stil unopened.
In short, it's a typîcal Belgian chaotic laissez-faire mess, and although not as bad as Charleroi, where the economic downturn really caused a disaster, it's not a shining example of planning or network layout. REsulting in so nice stations where you don't feel very comfortable.

Will the system ever be converted to a proper metro, like they did in Brussels?

The trams don’t ding as they leave the station like they do in Brussels, interesting. Do they have a bell?
I’m from the UK btw, only Belgium city I’ve been to is Brussels and loved the metros, trams and pre-metro trams there. 1:51

Hi! I will be visiting antwerp soon and can you confirm me if public transport payments can only be made by contactless credit card directly on the bus/tram? Thanks

    • @Ksandur
      @Ksandur Před 2 lety +2

You have multiple options, but it depends on what mode of transport you're taking
      Tram Only:
-Contactless credit/debit card, white check-in devices. They are not yet available on the busses.
      Bus and/or tram:
-Buy a 10-ride card at a De Lijn ticket machine, costs €16 (€1,60 per ride) usually located in the pre-metro stations or at some train stations, you have to check these in at the yellow devices on the trams and busses.
-Send an SMS to '4884' containing the letters 'dl'. These tickets are valid for one hour of travel and cost €2,00 + operator fees. For local numbers it usually amounts to €2,95 but check your operator to make sure.
