      I don't know how FIG wants creativity and variety if A, B and C skills can't be named. I'd rather see new low level skills that anybody can use in their routines than a H on BB or I-J-K on FX that nobody will do for decades.

    I really hate that elements caught in a mix grip are considered “1/2” I feel like they should take the figure skating approach where if the body is more and a quarter rotation away then it’s downgraded. Especially since not all skills have a higher grade of difficulty for a half turn

    I HATE that the arabian halfs (tucked and piked) have the same ratings as the ones without the half turn. No one is gonna take the risk of adding a half turn if there is not even a chance of it paying of thus these skills will barely ever be performed.

    • @1itslaurahere1
      @1itslaurahere1 Před 2 lety +36

      The half turns at the end take away the blind landing, that’s why they don’t have a higher value

      @@1itslaurahere1 I know, it still bothers me though because in my opinion these are really cool skills and I personally like to see them more often. The FIG often changes values of skills to encourage or discourage gymnasts to perform them and I think for this skill it is truly a missed oppurtunity to not give it a higher value.

      @@lyssyr1711 but double arabian 1/2 out is basically the same as Qi Qi's half-in half-out. it's not actually much harder at all. The harder skills that are undervalued are the ones people actually need to take the risk to do ex. 3.5, front 2.5, front triple, dowell.

    • @matthewhines9787
      @matthewhines9787 Před 2 lety +4

      I agree about the Oliveira at least. Yes, the 1/2 does create an easier to spot landing, but with this skill particularly, the gymnast has to open the body into a basically stretched position to do the extra 1/2. She's doing an arabian dbl pike kick-out to a 1/2.
      You can stay tucked and do a 1/2 twist, but you have to open up significantly in a pike 1/2 which slows the rotation significantly.
      On top of that, it would just be smart for the FIG to grade them higher in difficulty if only to encourage a variety. The code often picks skills which may have long been considered a certain level of difficulty, to upgrade a letter in order to encourage the trends. The biggest example I can think of right now is the change in the beam pirouette requirement. They obviously have a jones for He Xuemei's back spin and the Homma flairs.

      @@crownjules how is she stealing them away when they CHOSE to go on the tour? No one was forced and after the stress of the Olympics, it doesn't shock me that a lot of them chose to go on tour instead. Not everyone just wants to go to another big competition right away and a lot of the top gymnasts are going to college too like suni so even if they didn't go on tour, we still wouldn't see them. The tour had already been planned way before the Olympics were here anyway. Also, it's not cool to assume that there aren't any other good gymnasts from the states left that can do good at worlds. @educatedinyellow8189 Před 2 lety +44

      I think the issue was that some judges were downgrading the skill by not counting the half turn as being successfully performed. Nina was always catching it in the mixed grip, but some judges thought more rotation needed to happen before the catch while others accepted the rotation being completed through the catch. Basically, I think Nina was performing it the same way but getting different difficulty scores depending on the judge. She didn't want to be dealing with that uncertainty in the Olympics.

      @@educatedinyellow8189 kinda agree with those judges. I’ve been saying for ages the way a lot of gymnasts performing the “half turn” just twist their arms, and landing in that position jerks their body around to face the other way. I do think there should be a rule somewhat they determines whether they’ve performed the half twist or not, perhaps that their body has to be at least a quarter of the way round before they regrasp the bar. Gets rid of the ugly jerky movements and actually makes the skill as hard as it’s valued at

      @hannahwalmer1124 Před 2 lety

      @@NiceDrivewayy It's not, that's just an excuse so the women don't have to change technique. In MAG, the rule is already there, that the turn has to happen before catch. This has been an issue in WAG since the 80's. Look up old bar routines with the "Deltchev". They switch to mixed grip and then as they're swinging down from handstand, they turn forward and go into a Jaeger, but the commentators would always call it a "beautfiul Deltchev" lol.
