John is an absolute Metal legend in his own right which already makes him awesome but my respect for him has risen even more since I've seen him regularly on CZcams channels like Rock Fantasy and Sea of Tranquility where he's taken part in deep discussions about Metal albums. He's not only a great musician but a die-hard fan and champion of the genre and that's the way it should be!
Always on CZcams in comment sections being super cool too.
John is a perfect balance. He appreciates that bands love what he does but isn't egotistical enough to revel in it. I dig it!
Incantation is awesome. Still have their first 2 seven inches from when I was a young pup. Onward and Mortal Throne are absolutely amazing. Also forsaken mourning. Goddamn
John is genuinely one of the coolest guys in the metal scene. I have met him so many times over the years and he has always been the same guy and has always been a fun guy to talk to. I remember one time, I was just talking with him about random metal for a good while, even after the show was over. He eventually just had to leave so they could get everything packed and get going to the next town. He is also a funny dude and I am glad to see him still pounding out his brand of dark and moody death metal.
I’ll consider a 41 min video as a double dawg day
Went by like it was 14
John is such a cool guy, one of the greats in death metal. Incantation are overall my favorite death metal band. Great conversation!
John is right. You can't look at today through the lens of yesterday.
The first real metal show I went to was Morbid Angel, Nile, Incantation & Infestation on July 25th 1998 at the Maritime Hall in SF. I bought a Diabolical Conquest shirt immediately after seeing Incantation. Shortly afterwards I let my friend borrow the shirt and he lost it. I’ve never forgiven him.
Have the Dawg call him out in a paidski!
I bet brah brah, sounds traumatizing. This punk-ass, so-called, "friend" of yours probably isn't even still listening to Metal anymore.
He was just following trends in order to "fit in" and to be in the cool club and sit at the cool table. Wadda wanker, uh!?
Borrow a shirt? Did he not have clothes or is this some different lifestyle thing?
@@WALDENSOFTWARE something happened to the shirt he had on and I let him borrow it. Thankfully Incantation still makes that print. I’ve owned about 3 since then. Kind of a memorial to the OG tour shirt haha
Saw that tour a month before and Vader was on that lineup instead of Nile. We ran into Incantation at the Waffle House and Kyle wanted my At the Gates Gardens of Grief shirt. He traded me a long sleeve Diabolical tour shirt.
John is a real one. Seen Incantation 3 times and been able to meet him twice once at Damnation Fest and second time was meeting him at a headline show and he remembered both me and my gf and gave us both a guitar pick. Absolute legend who truly appreciates his fans. We must protect this man at all costs.
I recently saw John chilling at the Profanatica/Stormkeep/Primitive Warfare show in Asheville. Nothing but respect for him and all the guys in Incantation. Horns up for keeping the spirit of metal alive.
Repulsion was nuts because the had Buicks and Chevys tearing up the roads! Great bands in/from Flint in all kinds of music.
Hell yeah! John McEntee! Now the Grind's happy.
bruh!!! that's so lit! that's so fire!!~! did you just refer to yourself in the third person using your youtuber username!!!! man i wish i was as cool as y'all.
Incantation is one of my favourite bands since about 1999-2000, when I first heard them. I was 15 then. I went to a show they did in Tremembé, country side São Paulo, either in 2000 or 2001, possibly on the tour they recorded Blasphemy in Brazil. Went to their show last year here in São Paulo after almost 25 years.
I feel bad about bands of this importance and quality having to play in shitty venues like the one they played here last year, Teatro Mars. Sound quality was absolute shit, but I still enjoyed the show a lot.
Thank you J-Dawg for this great video. You're doing some important work getting these older guys on video, would totally go for even lengthier talks with them. John McEntee is such a nice guy, with so many stories to tell.
Suffocation - Despise The Sun is the bar as far as Suffocation goes for me. Doug Cerrito has been missed.
My personal favorite as well. I dig most of their stuff, but Despise the Sun is just perfect.
@GraveyardghouI yeah, that might be the best EP of all time or right up there.
Despise the sun is the perfect EP they even redid catatonia

John mcentee is a legend and super cool dude. Talked to him for a bit after the show in Indy and he was super nice and responsive. True vanguard of the music.
99% of musicians are too egotistical to give anyone the time of day. They behave like a fake celebrity superstar musician on an 80s primetimeTV US family show.

John is great I'm glad Incantation have had this resurgence in popularity. Also the sound on the 1st 2 Albums for me is unmatched Sinister sounding DM.
Sinister the band?
Once again great interview. Now I'm going to ball up with my post Leprosy Death collection!
Spiritual was the first Death album I heard...Human alway stuck with me be cause it was the 1st album I bought when it came out...say what you want, but it barely got a few songs in and got yanked from HS Art class....Reinert rips and it's still heavy as fuck.
13-16 is when the music is the most dangerous. That why we can't let that go. We conquered fear because we lived the music. That's always special! You owe it to yourself to do something scary.
Incantation - Onward To Golgotha is one of the best Death Metal albums ever recorded. I would consider Immolation - Dawg of Possession, Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Incantation - Onward To Golgotha, Deicide - Deicide, Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells, and Grave - Into the Grave to be the best Death Metal debut albums.
1st 4 or 5 Unleashed were great!!!
John is a legend, and totally cool dude. Incantation rules!
Awesome interview! Golgotha was my first album...seen them on Diabolical and kinda of fell off after seeing John singing for the first time back in the early 2000's or so....probably should give some of the albums a chance...always love the 1st 3, brutal and completely poser-proof.
Best interview yet. A+
I have the Onward to Golgotha record but one of my favorites is Blasphemy... The last 3 have been pretty good. Legends!

Good interview! I loved McEntee’s Death rant hahaha.
I remember when I was young and first getting into death metal . I went to a mall in dallas tx . To pick me up some death metal cuz my little town had nothing like that. I went and picked 2 albums that I never heard of and knew nothing about . Shit I didn't even know of they were death metal. But I picked out a suffication and incantation cd . Both were awesome. I can't belive I picked such great bands without even knowing who or what they were.
I met John back in 92 or 93, Incantation was playing a basement show with a band called Public Assassin which 3 members formed Burning Inside in which Burning Inside relocated to Florida. Burning Inside was Richard Christy (Death), Steve Childers (Black Witchery), Mike Estes. Killer shit, but Incantation became my favorite DM band that night with Onward To Golgotha.
Great dawg interview again
That band photo for Effigy Of The Forgotten DEFINITELY fit the bill

Just a personal opinion but Immolation is the most consistent American DM band to have a large discography. Of course I have favorites but they don’t have a bad album.
Incantation is pretty close for me but Immolation excites me more.
