    When I went to UK it was interesting to see how different their turnstiles were. To big to jump, not easy to have two people go in at one time. And required you to enter your pass into a machine to leave the station

      London fares are zone based, so it calculates which zone you entered and which zone you left. Interestingly the bus fare is capped after a certain number of rides the bus becomes free for the rest of the day.

      Nice thing about the UK ones is that these days you don't even need a fare card to ride, you can use your debit card or phone to pay.
      I remember seeing some interesting barriers in Russia, they were always open and would close only if you didn't insert a fare card or coin. Made for very high throughput.

    These modern turnstyles are what other world cities have had for decades now. Many subway systems in Europe even have platform gates to stop people from jumping or being pushed in front of the trains.... the MTA is still stuck in the 1970's & 1980's but good to see they're trying to catch up with the rest of the world finally.

      Platform screen doors would be great, but the system has a mix of trains with car doors in different places. Until the entire car fleet is homologous screen doors won’t work.

    Those types of plexi glass doors have long been in subway systems in places like Spain, France etc. They set those up a while back for fare evaders.

      Exactly what I said. This is something that other cities across the world upgraded like 15-20 years ago. Even the Marta system in Atlanta did this over a decade ago. Why is NYC’s MTA and other northern metros lagging behind?

      Their contractors pay basic laborers $75 per hour - not including insurance charges and everything else, pre markup. Total cost for the most basic work is well over $100 per hour and nearly double that for specialty trades. Then they have additional crazy regs like every worker needs a special heavy $75 vest (which is hot and slows production in warm weather). They have innumerable "CCM" managers who literally do nothing for 7.5 hours in an 8 hour day. I've been on jobs where they had more CCMs than workers, all playing on their phones all day long. Although, if the pay wasn't so high I wouldn't work for them, it's miserable doing construction in NYC.

    In Japan, it is often that there is no barrier at the "turnstile" so people can move through quicker. Yet, everybody pays. Maybe another question that should be asked is why is the New York subway so expensive and so filthy. I recently went to Shenzhen and Guangzhou (China). It costs 7 Yuan (equivalent to $1) to ride on the Metro for an hour across the city. Short trips were 2 Yuan (30 cents). China's metro systems are clean, efficient, and all stations have platform doors making it impossible for people to fall in (or get pushed in like in NYC).

      American trains are expensive because the government barely gives them anything. Add that onto the fact that there are few rail networks and infrastructure favors cars, resulting in fewer people taking trains. Thus the only way for them to keep the railways in service is to increase the prices. I'm sure if the government cared more about our rail networks this wouldn't be an issue.

    People also have to understand that these highly advanced subway systems in other countries have a much better service, safety/security, and there is always assistance available. So it’s not only how modern but also the type of service

      Other cities are not NYC. Europe has a completely different culture than the Northeast of the USA, namely NYC. It's not just about the systems and infrastructure but also about the people using those services and the values and morals they have. Nyc is full of miserable people.

    I live in NYC, and at one time during the summers I was making less than $1,200 A MONTH and STILL I DIDN’T QUALIFY for the discounted metro card (50% off reduction). My rent is $1,200… yeah I made “just over” the qualifying income 🤬 I paid my fare every single time tho bleeding my savings account but for those who do jump the turnstile, I don’t blame them.

    Every time I see people jump the turnstyle it cracks me up. Some of them are so creative. I saw a guy crawl on his belly through the turnstyle. Cracked me up ALL DAY.🤣

      The first model is implemented in Paris and it works. Including in the wildest and busiest stations.
      And believe me, I've seen the incredible amount of torture and abuse Parisians put these faregates through, and yet, they're virtually unscathed.
      The gates are like bulletproof plexiglass and stainless steel.
      If it works in Paris...

      Sounds about right. After all, they're around to transport you. They don't want you to stay in the stations too long. They want you to get on the train/bus and get you where you want to be. MTA is not a restaurant and is not required to add a restroom.

      To be fair, it makes complete sense to spend millions of dollars to fix a problem that is costing you millions of dollars over the years. You spend some money now, and it pays itself back overtime. The extra income saved can be used to improve other things, their budget is already tight as it is.

The town 2 miles from me just opened a new community square that had public bathrooms open last November.     Just so that we know, there isn’t any gate or turnstile in the Berlin Germany subway system. There are kiosks on the platform. Passengers buy fare on the platform before boarding. It’s all based on an honor system. Honor and respect are what we desperately need and extremely lack of in this country.

    How about improving the cleanliness of the stations, ensuring the schedules are being met, reducing cancellations and the need for transfer shuttles and just improving the overall infrastructure. And most importantly...firing managment as is because they are incompetent. Maybe if people had a better experience and a public transit system they can be proud of...they would do their share and pay more consistently.
    Paying a premium to be packed like sardines in a pissy train thats making me late because they cant stay true to the schedule is crazy.

The toll they just added to the city is supposed to bring in like 7 billion and the MTA had only a 2 billion deficit last year but next year they will continue to have a deficit. They don’t manage the money properly. There have been many people who made over 100k in just overtime not counting base pay but got caught never showing up for work for the whole year

In others, like China, there's a lot of institutional theft and corruption, but the penalties for individual lawbreakers is so great that many people do not risk it.

    Well, the solution in Germany is just not using barriers at all. Use a lot of unmarked conductors and randomly check the tickets. The offender risks paying 60 Euro for each offense, which is around 15x single tickets fare. In 2015, the public transport operator in Hanover, Germany generated ca. 1.5 million Euro of "extra income" from it. That was with a 40-Euro-Penalty and the city population of around 500k people.

      Yes! If people expect to have their card checked they won't risk it. In Queensland Australia they check the light rail ticket cards very regularly maybe 50% of all journeys.

    Plexiglass doors are used in Boston and Paris, with a similar approach used in San Francisco. They would certainly make it easier to travel with luggage.

    In Toronto, we installed plexiglass fare gates, actually, the ones that were shown in the video. However, the Toronto Transit Commission still loses millions of dollars a year from fare evasion.

      Made me laugh when I saw them feature these gates in the video. If you push hard enough you can quite easily squeeze through the Presto gates. I did customer service for TTC a while back ago and one of our jobs was to count the number of people who squeezed through the gates without paying 😂

    NO !!! The real problem in NYC is the MTA and LIRR track workers collecting a paycheck for doing nothing for hours. Just look at the track workers in your station or when you pass by them when they are on the rails. They do nothing for the majority of their shift. Then, the MTA cries to the governor that they are broke and beg for billions of dollars. The gov needs to have gov officials overseeing the MTA and not let the MTA supervise themselves. Our tax dollars should be spent wisely !!

    NY should start moving away from a business model where the fare box is a significant portion of the mass transit system's revenue stream. Mass transit should be seen as a public good that is meant to enable people to get around the city quickly and efficiently while reducing pollution. If you bring fares down to a very low level, most people won't even bother evading the payment. It will also make mass transit a much more attractive form of transportation in comparison to cars. I think NYC could really learn a thing or two from Mexico City's mass transit system.

      Nobody in New York drives because it’s cheaper than MTA. Driving there is far more expensive. Lowering fares wouldn’t really discourage people from driving as those people use cars for convenience in spite of price.
      However I agree that public transport should be treated as a public good. Money has to come from somewhere though.

    How about doing something about overcharging for double swipes and transfers,
    and then making the customer fill out a complicated form and wait weeks to get their refund?
    The teller machines should be able to fix overcharges right in the station. This is the 21st century, not the 1970"s.
    I should also be able to get a readout of my charges and credits too. I'm too busy to have to keep track of my balance in my head, every time i enter the subway and transfer to a bus.

    The plexiglass barriers literally don't do anything to stop people. In Toronto anyone who wants to fair evade just walks through the wheelchair gate, it's wide enough for the plexiglass to bend a bit and make a gap big enough to get through, and I'd you push hard enough they just open so they don't break.

    These plastic gates are absolutely useless. They have this all across Europe. First of all, they can be push open very easily with a small amount of force. Second, these gates often open for about 7 to 10 seconds when a paying passenger walk through, allowing all the fare evader to follow right behind the person in front, bypassing the gate.

    What this is: the guards refuse to enforce fare evasion because if you stop someone they will argue with you as much as possible taking as much time as possible and accuse you of all kinds of things. a good portion of NYC upon seeing the cops or gate guards very busy with an individual will slip through the gates. So each person you stop and argue with will mean another 50 slip through.

    Fix the problem of the homeless using the trains as a rolling hotel, when citizens go to work only to find them sleeping the length of the seat.. install individual seats like on the buses

      Okay… but consider this, houseless people don’t have many options. The homeless shelters are full every night and people get stopped at the door at a cut-off point. It’s first come, first serve. And then in the morning they kick all of them out for the day until they have to repeat the same thing that happened the night before. No new major homeless shelter projects are being planned to take off the load from the others across the city, and they’re definitely not catching up to the rate of people becoming unhoused in this economy. The cost of living keeps going up and many people’s pay isn’t really able to catch up to that, leading to more people facing homelessness. Now where would they go if not for the subways? Before chastising homeless people for living where they do, please reconsider where we’re supposed to put all the people we neglected to care about over all these years

      @@ThatPurpleFlounder homeless shelters are not full every night. On top of that immigrants who come here illegally get to stay at 5* hotels. Why isn’t the same treatment being done for our veterans or our impoverished families? Stop simping

It only takes one google search of "are homeless shelters in NYC full every night" to find several articles detailing the state of homelessness in this city. A report from Coalition for the Homeless from 2021 details that 58,000 people sleep in homeless shelters and that "nearly every night of the year, all of the Safe Haven facilities in the city are filled to capacity." The news outlet called The City has a good piece on this which you should consider reading.
      I've also had experience with homeless people due to volunteering for non-profits that aimed at helping them and what they told me about the shelter system in this city is consistent with what was written in that aforementioned report. I can only imagine now that it's gotten worse since that piece was published since the pandemic. So your first statement is just baseless.
      Secondly, you realize we're in the middle of a humanitarian crisis with people fleeing from war-torn or impoverished countries and we can't just let them die? The city is trying to convert enough buildings into migrant shelters so the migrants don't overrun the city or live on the streets causing more of a homelessness crisis. Also they're staying and quarantining in those buildings while they wait to present their cases for asylum so they aren't spreading any infectious diseases to the wider city. These building conversions are also a welcome project for hotels that lost their revenue from the pandemic, so it's a win win for them and the city.
      And before you go hemming and hawing about why we don't do the same for veterans and impoverished families, social workers working with the homeless already are trying their best to get them sheltered but too many people are falling through the cracks because of rent increases and an increased rate of evictions. Our city's systems aren't built for this and whenever anyone tries to propose a solution addressing the problem, questions about how we're gonna pay for it keep popping up and then we get stuck on that until the next person tries to address the crisis. Well now everyone here is paying for it by living in a city with an ever increasing rent and, with it, a bigger homeless population due to no to little regulation on what landlords, property owners, and for-profit housing corporations do to their renters. I can't blame homeless people for being resourceful enough to live in the subways in this hellscape of a disjointed housing system.
      Lastly, I don't know who you're accusing me of simping for, but if you mean caring about people, I think you'd benefit from learning how to do the same cuz I'd assume you don't want to live in a worsening and miserable world in the near future. Also please stop huffing copium and touch some grass. Maybe talk to some homeless people and have genuine conversations with them. You might learn something you never knew before.

    The crazy thing is yesterday I was stuck on the train for about 2 hours. Which was supposed to be a 37 min ride. Then on top of it you guys are going so hard on people not paying. Why should we pay you guys when we are always going to end up late to work anyway. It’s crazy how much they’ll spend on stopping us from jumping the train. But noting to make the trains more comfortable. With out a long wait

    I was in NYC year ago, and some of the turnstiles didn't work, I'd scan my MetroCard but it didn't open. And even though I had unlimited use it said I had to wait 15 minutes to use again. Had to jump it twice because of this in just 5 days there. Is this common ???

      That is actually not a terrible idea. It is already funded via tax dollars, so fares are really nothing but extra frosting. The bigger problem is reining in the spending budgets to compensate. Good luck convincing AOC to go along with it.

    Smh, the problem that needs fixing is that everything is too expensive. MTA would rather spend millions than make public transportation more affordable, and that goes to tolls as well. There are no toll booths with people working there and tolls rates still high. Get the drift. Minimum wage needs to go up in NYC. Then again if Minimum wage goes up, everything else will go up as well. Go figure.

      @@sneksteppy NYC residents are mostly depended on government handouts anyways. That’s how most of them can afford to live in rent stabilized buildings or NYCHA properties They are heavily dependent on these handouts or they will perish.
