I've had worse seats than that mate. Once, returning from Caribbean, I was put on the very back row of the plane, no window & legroom & ceiling that sloped inwards (I am 6'3''), right in front of the toilet and several people had diarrhoea. It was made worse by sitting me next to the worlds fattest man , and as we got to cruising altitude, a baby started crying, and did so the whole way home.

Got a better one…American Trans Air (ATA) 757..late winter, 2001…all coach…very dense capacity ..somewhere near door 3, no window. I think the center cabin lav was supposed to be there on a “normal” carrier……AC was questionable…..bunch of drunks returning from Vegas….and oh, yeah..my wife started morning sickness with our first child on the flight. Flight from hell….and the fabric on the seats looked like something out of a city bus.

Be thankful your in that seat! I use to call them the "Jackscrew Airplanes" because of the jackscrew in the horizontal stabilizer occasionally failed. The McDonnell Douglas engineering team used a simple Acme Nut with grease applied in-between that and the threaded shaft that controlled the horizontal stabilizer, (the grease was supposed to be changed or reapplied at 600 hours or so and many airlines maintenance staff would overlook that or have a 2,000 hour interval), these errors were all preventive/predictive maintenance issues - meaning human errors occurred!

I have experienced the drone of being in the last row of a DC-9, also with no window / view, but a ton of noise. The older generation jets used on the DC-9 were even louder than the MD-80. The B-727 also had the stairway in the tail, and the aft section where the lavatories were between the three engines was very loud. Fortunately there was an exit door separating the side engines from the last row of seats, so there were windows, and it wasn't too loud.

I am sorry but you crack me up!!! This was awesome, not that you got that seat, but that you got that seat and you made me laugh because of it. As a flight attendant working for an airline that had a ton of MD-80 aircraft, the engine noise and its rhythmic rrrRRRRRrrrrRRRRrrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrRRRRRrrrrrRRRRRrrrrrr(not sure if that captured the sound accurately or not)always made me very sleepy.
When people, who got that seat way in the back of the airplane, boarded the first thing they would always say is "Whoa HO HO, back of the bus!!" Then after sitting down only to discover that an engine was blocking 99% of their view to the outside, they would always let me know of their displeasure at not really having a window to look out of. To lighten the mood, I would tell them that they had one of the most important seats on the airplane; that if at anytime they could clearly see the ground, suddenly having a great view, they needed to let one of us Flight attendants know right away. It always got a laugh, of which I wasn't always sure. But I did make sure I only said it to people who seemed relaxed and at ease with flying.

@@avationgeek.1217 Most airlines have you open the shades on landing. It might even be a regulation. This was Virgin America and they liked the cool night-club vibe on their flights, so they had the shades down on boarding.

I flew three times on the MD-80, all three on American Airlines: Dallas to San Diego and back, and San Francisco to Dallas. On all these flights, I was on a midplane seat, so I didn't have those problems you had, Noel. But I found it claustrophobic and the seats were very uncomfortable. I also found it a bit noisier than average even if you sat more forward.
Planes with engines mounted on the rear fuselage can be noisy if you are on a rear seat (this happens on Fokker 100s, though they're great planes if you sit from the middle forward), but sometimes the manufacturer does a good noise insulation job. That was the case with the Boeing 727 (the engines were slightly aft of the last windows). I'm old enough to have flown a lot on the 727 and I loved that plane, the retired type that I miss the most. It was relatively quiet even in the rear, and if you sat on a window seat ahead of the wings, the unobstructed view was unbeatable, especially but not only on the 727-200 (I flew on a lot of -100s, too). And don't get me started on the powerful takeoff and climb, and the higher speed that shaved some minutes off the flight time compared to other jets such as 737s.
Oh, and the 727 had rear stairs, too. I used them a lot and they really sped up the boarding and disembarking at airports without jet bridges (which were most of them here back then).

Growing up I boarded through the back a lot on PSA 727's and later on PSA and Alaska MD-80's. Something that seemed so routine back then but not anymore. Also noticed that the MD83 still had the smoker's barrier when they had the smoking section in the back of the plane. Like the smoke was really going to stay in the back of the plane.

Still beats my view on the Aeroflot 777 which, despite being one of my best flights so far (as I commented before), had me sitting at a window seat with no window, I didn't know that was even possible!

MD-80s were really common here in the US a few years ago. I always thought there were a nice looking aircraft it's a shame they got rid of them.

Try sitting in that seat from St. Louis to San Antonio on TWA in 1999. What I didn’t know was that I was at the beginning of a very long and debilitating chronic pain journey, one of the symptoms of which is sensitivity to VIBRATIONS. I was in so much pain by the time we landed that they had to carry me out in an aisle chair!!!

I wrote the previous comment before I see the full video so this is to bright your day Noel. There was a man who wanted to be a great hunter so he get a gun and go to the woods to kill a bear . He get to a bears cave he see the bear try to shoot her but the gun fail to fire. The bear smile, he give some good punches to the hunter and after the hospital the man says this will not happen again . Second try with new rifle same results . The guy tries another time, then another, same results . At the end the bear says to the hunter - ok tell me the truth you do not come here for hunting ... So Noel tell the truth you like engines more than planes maybe?...

Well. At least you even had a window. On a Delta 757 one time (in premium economy might I add!) I had NO window the entire way. I actually messaged Delta and they said it usually had to do with ductwork running up the side of the wall. Definitely felt cheated out on that one.

I flew on an MD-80 on American Eagle from Chicago to St Louis in 2002 but I was lucky enough to get a decent view. There were storms over St Louis as we came in to land and the pilot was dodging the storm clouds. It was like being on the back of that bike taxi you took across London

My favorite seat is an aisle seat next to the toilet. I'm a nervous flyer and I have to get up and pee a lot. I also get a bad case of the farts. I dread the middle or window seat.

A terrific report, Noel, well done!! What this achieves is seeing the different culture at first hand. So many You Tubers are content to show the usual Western European airports. Loved the people and facial expressions, the dress, the goats, the kids not fastened in the back of the cab, the passengers staring at you. I could almost smell the place. Brilliant.

  • @ThruAWiderLens

So sorry about the seat, Noel!
I was once the sole passenger on a DC-9 flying from Brisbane up to Townsville in Australia. It was either TAA or Ansett, and I don't recall how it happened. I think maybe it was Christmas day, sometime back in the 70s. They had this weird thing where both airlines flew the same routes at the same times. On this flight it was just me and a couple of lovely flight attendants in the main cabin. After landing I went down the stairs out the back and walked across the tarmac, alone. A surreal experience.

    • @thies7831
      @thies7831 Před 9 měsíci +1

It's not weird. It was the fixed 2-airline agreement between Ansett and the government owned competitor TAA (Take Another Airline). The very same fleet. If one ordered a 727, the other had to have it too. If one set a flight in the timetable, it was approved only, if the other flew in the very time slot too. I guess it was just a matter of tossing a coin in the tower for sorting out, who was getting on the runway first.
Your experience could have been a positioning flight. The other had all the passengers for that slot, while the capacity for the return trips might have been higher and allowed for a more even share. TAA was morphed into Australian Airlines before being sucked up as QANTAS' Domestic arm and Ansett going broke. The rest is history, having spread into even more weird airlines serving Australian air routes.
