It's not cheap if you're on a fixed income. I don't get that much per month. The income I receive each month, isn't even enough to pay the rent. It seems so unfair when you're elderly and disabled.
The first one used to be two apartments but they turned it into one. Translation is they got a violation and had to convert the apartment back to what it was before which was one apartment. And trust that no gas company placed those meters in bathrooms. Those bathrooms were built after and around those meters.

Two gas meters proves it was 2 apartments, however those meters have been in the same spot from when the building was built. Bathroom was built around it.
Seeing a gas meter in a bathroom is a no go for me.
That second apartment being on the basement level is a concern. I’ve lived in NYC through Hurricane Sandy, Henry, and Irene (just to name a few) and always see flooded basements on the news. The sewer system is very outdated and flooding is common in some areas during the average thunderstorm.
The 3rd apartment is a chop job. No common living space. I think the 1st bedroom with the folding entry door used to be the living room. I like how they refer to the corner of the hallway with 4 cheap shelves as common space to potentially be used as a workspace. It's literally a hallway and there's no space for a chair there. If your roommate wanted to use the kitchen or bathroom you'd be blocking them if you sat there. Ridiculous!!

No one can live alone in NYC unless they're in the 1%. That gas meter in the bathroom is awful. Teeny tiny sink, tiny kitchen for 4-5 people!? Nope. Second one comes with hot and cold running rats. Perfect for vampires. Third apartment sports a symbolic kitchen and view of bricks.
I would hate the utility company marching through the inside of my home once a month to read the meter. Theres no reason the landlord couldn't make sure all the meters are on the exterior of the apartments.

That first apartment wins the most expensive place I'd never even consider renting award. 🤮
With the 1st $9500 apartment, as thin as Cash is he can barely get in the 2nd bathroom door or sit on the toilet without his body touching the surrounding walls. Being that he weighs like 150 lbs wet, imagine a larger person trying to use that bathroom. Why would they renovate it and make it that tight? It makes zero sense.
Or even a skinny person with a busted ankle. They wouldn't be able to maneuver to use the toilet.

The friends or family would love to have visitors they can torture with a long list of house and mortgage prices like posters here. 😄BTW, I had a busted ankle and maneuvered tight spaces just fine. A small bathroom works well then because you can lean on stuff and it's handy to lower and raise yourself to use the toilet. No cane or crutches required.

What scares people away is the idea of having to have two or more roomates to survive. All that to be surrounded by noise, concrete and no privacy.

Oh no, these apartments are completely overpriced for the space that you're getting. The gas meter in the bathroom is not cool at all, the second apartment in the basement is a safety hazard, and paying $2,650 for that narrow apartment with a very tight kitchen is not going to cut it.
I appreciate the attempt to make the best of a bad situation, but all 4 of these places are depressing. The first one had quirks that might be tolerable at 1/2 the price. The other three were dismal. Like, eating Banquet TV dinners while watching QVC and waiting to die dismal.

That 1st combined apartment, those bathrooms were so ridiculously narrow that you couldn't be any larger than Cash. & the gas meters in the showers??? Crazy. The 2nd place, WHY would anyone want to live with their windows right across from the garbage cans & "visitors"? No way would i be opening those windows. & while all that exposed brick might be for some it's too much, altho i admit those vaulted ceilings are unique. Feels like you're living in a subway tunnel. At least the last 2 were bright & sunny. But $2600 for 2 bedrooms with absolutely no common space? You better really like being in your room. You'd have better value just renting a room somewhere. Hopefully in the near 3 days we'll see better places

It’s flabbergasting that these are considered “cheap” when grown adults are forced to live with multiple roommates to pay over a thousand in rent every month for what amounts to a single wide trailer bedroom. Astounding that they have slowly brainwashed an entire city of people that this is “cheap” and a great deal.
Oh, Skye! Great to see her again. Such an infectious smile she has! First apartment at $9500/month is a no. Besides it being a chop job the bathrooms are way too small. Cash isn't really a big guy (apologies, Cash) and you can see that even he had difficulty maneuvering. The second basement unit at $4500/month is a no--especially when I saw the garbage area near a bedroom window... It's too cave-like for me and there is not enough room in the "after-thought" kitchen. Bookshelves would have been better and get greater use. While the latter two are priced nicely ($2600 & $2650/month) they are just too narrow, and the bathrooms were small. BUT... were I a college student (or a young person starting out) I would consider them as a share situ.
Considering the cost of living in a dorm at NYU you're probably right to consider the last 2 as options. I just read that NYU has a curfew. You must sign in by 11pm & can't leave until 7am. Like what??? Parties are just getting started at 11 lol
And ... did I miss something, or were there NO "common areas" (except kitchen) in the "cheap" apartments???? No living room? No thanks.

I saw the garbage near the window too, and thought, there is no way you could ever open your window. In fact, you'd want to seal it off, so no air could seep in at all. The smell would be horrendous.

Some of my favorite apartments have been in basements. Keeps cool in the summer, and easy to heat in the winter for the most part. But - yes, you have to be aware of where they are located.
What's sad is that we have to talk "per person" pricing in order to get to reasonable, livable rent rates.

I would love to live in New York if I could afford it. I love the neighbourhoods that have everything in one place, instead of suburbia where you have to drive to an expensive corner store if you forgot to buy something at the massive grocery store. I do not like malls either, ugh.

Hard pass on any basement/ street level apartments. Trash bin placement lending to odors, rodents and then there is flooding potential 😬

If you can overlook the gas meters in the bathrooms, and if you think you can share with three strangers, I suppose the newness of the first apartment might attract you. I'd prefer it to the dungeon (#2), which does have laundry machines so that the resident vampires can wash their shrouds. The third one is very basic and very cramped, and the last one isn't much better. Maybe paying less than $2,500/month sounds good to a NYC denizen, but that's expensive for any shared situation.

The gas meters are not very confidence-inspiring. The location is strange enough, but plenty of NYC buildings are like this... however, you'll notice that this apartment doesn't actually have any gas appliances. Why leave them there, then? Because whoever did this renovation work didn't bother filing any permits. Any time gas plumbing is removed in NYC, the gas company is required to test and lock the control valves first (both here are unlocked), then a licensed plumber is supposed to file cap/remove permits and have DOB inspect the work. If they couldn't be bothered to do that in order to remove the gigantic eyesore gas meter in the shower, odds are they didn't bother with any of the electrical or water/sewage lines either.
As an added bonus,, since Con Edison has no record of these meters ever being turned off, whoever rents this apartment will end up paying an extra ~60 bucks a month for gas that they're not even using.
No to the RV polished wood panel bathroom.

Gas meters hanging from the ceiling are sooo ugly and those tiny bathrooms are much too tight. If anyone renting was even a little overweight it would be very hard to do your business, and cleaning around the area would be very difficult for anyone. Here in NJ there is a minimum of space required around the toilet and it is much more than the first apartment in the video.
That basement apartment looks like a great place to get robbed.

Hi Cash and to your friend I like the $1300 a month rent fee. I believe it’s affordable if it’s an old and nicely renovated. I like vintage things and I am kind of old fashioned and like the old school days. I hope SoCal gas and food goes down. I am sad for the ones who are struggling to pay rent for their condos,apartments, and homes. It’s the young college age and seniors who struggle. Very pretty apt and great tour NYC has the best realtors. Stay well and safe 👍😀
Remember the disabled and other disadvantaged people; it's impossible to find anything accessible. Not having stairs is not enough; people need to get in and out of bed, the shower, use the kitchen, etc. Nobody actually makes accessible housing, much less low income, and both are desperately needed.
I don't think anyone noticed the state of care homes during COVID, even though people felt it was a big chance for change. Unfortunately, nobody did, because nothing has changed. Many people hoped that bringing all the neglect and abuse into the open would cause people to do something about it. I knew nothing would change, because no matter how much it is shown in the news, people talk about it, people in the medical profession warn about it nobody hears it. Sometimes even people who work in the system see nothing wrong with it. They must not think of those who live there as people any longer, because they wouldn't put up with being treated that way themselves.
Any care home that is actually humane is run privately, and costs insane amounts of money (think many thousand per month). Publicly run homes or places run by people paid by the government to run care homes are dismal at best.
Baby boomers are retiring and aging; they will need accessible and low income housing, as well as home care, more doctor and hospitals visits, and care homes. Nobody has been preparing or is prepared for this at all. I don't see anyone building low income houses, apartments/condos that will accept any type of modification or are already modified to accommodate disabled or elderly people. It's already a disaster that everyone is ignoring. Unless someone is trying to care for someone or are a person in the situation people are just oblivious and assume everything is great until someone opens their eyes and they are so shocked at how bad things are. I honestly don't know how society got to the point of ignoring the majority of people who are middle and lower class, and making all accommodations for the very rich. The number of people just in these comments who can't or couldn't afford decent housing is staggering.
The very basic needs of human beings, food and shelter, are becoming out of reach for so many in this society. I don't understand how we've let the government completely ignore people and cater to the 1% who not only needs no help, but should be actually be monitored and regulated by the EPA, FDA, unions, and other organizations created to protect people and the environment from being destroyed, poisoned, injured, and killed.
Maybe after the basics we could try for something way out there like equality, happiness, and other crazy things like that?

Apart from being a flooding hazard, number two is cool, but none of these are cheap or affordable, and I'm talking per person. New York prices that are presented as normal are laughable - if you can afford them you wouldn't be renting (shouldn't be!)
NYC real estate can be brutal. Roommates can be brutal, even if they are nice. It just is brutal. The gas meter thing is brutal. In the first apartment,the toilet space is too narrow!!!

@@dewflower7298 5:13 as he is entering the door, you can see the entrance is covered by the main entrance stairs. Also 5:16 it shows Cash entering another sealed access walkway. The apartment front door has a seal at the bottom if any kind of weather were to seep in. And having tile floors is great too. The 'outdoor space door' is a reasonable 2-3 inches above the brick. It looks like the space between the buildings is sloped (5:45) away from the door.

I've lived NYC for 73 years and I' ve never seen a gas meter inside anyone's apartment ever. And that includes NYCHA public housing.

That third apartment is a despicable studio with a lot of walls (..well, a big studio, but despicable if anyone considers that a 2BR). You can't use the line "if you wanna live in New York"...it's a giant city, and there's a shite ton of other neighborhoods and burroughs for way cheaper, that you'd still "living in New York" for.

We've seen some apt buildings that are accessible. I don't know what NYC does financially beyond forcing new structures that want special deals to create disabled and rent controlled apts among the others.
