Lucas wanted to keep the movie under two hours and when you're cutting for the cinema, you want to keep things moving. There's a long sequence of exposition after the escape from Naboo and before the podrace so the race itself is edited to keep the pace moving and pick up the energy. In the theatrical version, the second lap is much shorter in terms of screen time. The first lap shows us the layout of the course and the third lap shows his battle with Sebulba. The second lap shows him moving up the field and having trouble with the cable (which is cut in the theatrical release) but because there's the sequence in the third lap where Anakin has engine trouble, I guess the decision was made that there needn't need to be two mechanical failures during the race (not including the false start) and that bit could be cut for time.
With the later home releases, pacing isn't so much of an issue because at home you can pause the movie and you don't have the issue of how many screenings a cinema can have per day, which allowed Lucas to put the entire race back in to the film.
Regarding the Yoda puppet, as I mention elsewhere, The Last Jedi actually uses a puppet made from the original moulds from Empire and in still photos it looks fine but when you see it in motion on screen, it looks weird. A lot of it comes down to lighting and the way Frank Oz did the puppeteering. Phantom Menace used a different puppet, meant to convey a younger Yoda, before he goes through the war and his battle with Sidious but it never quite looked right. The digital Yoda, which I believe was created from scans of the original Empire puppet, looks far closer to Yoda in Empire and definitely looks more like you'd expect a younger Yoda to look.
Thank you
The theatrical is better because it has Puppet Yoda
@@wa-bu3ke the special edition is way f***ing better because it has puppet yoda idiot. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Also in case you didn’t know, a lot of those extended POD RACE Material was included on the DVD when it dropped in 2001
@@wa-bu3ke the special edition is better because of puppet Yoda idiot.
Most of these changes or scene extensions were introduced in 2001 with the DVD. It had nothing to do with budget or technology restraints and everything to do with runtime restrictions as well as George's unrelenting compulsion to fiddle with things. The only major change that debuted with the Blu-ray was the CG Yoda replacing the puppet.
Thanks for letting me know 😊
@@VideoTasties I think the reason the prequel changes fly under most people’s radar compared to the ones made to the original 3 films is because people had 15-20 years to familiarize themselves with the original versions of those films before the special editions were released. The prequels by comparison were changed relatively early after leaving theaters. TPM had most of its changes made for the 2001 DVD and the changes to AOTC and ROTS happened immediately after they left theaters.
And force speed at the beginning. When he said, "It's a standoff. Let's go." There was also the 3D re-release. Which I never saw but I'm assuming is just the Blu-ray version converted to 3D.
Am I the only who likes the puppet yoda in this movie and thinks it looks better than the CGI one because it is real.
I like puppet Yoda just not his face
I can confirm that all of those extra scenes are on the 2002 DVD but it still retains puppet Yoda overall 🤔
Thanks
I need to rewatch the dvd I have, and check my copy. I couldn’t remember any of those scenes.
@@TheMovieCheerPodcast I thought I had the DVD but it's sith
I’m sure there was more on the dvd. There’s the scene where they nearly go over the waterfall on naboo and there was more pod racing scenes. Sabula uses his fire vents on someone.
@@fwrudigeri don’t know about the fire vents one, but the waterfall was a deleted scene
I prefer the theatrical version it moves much quicker and I got use to that one more
Yeah the podrace goes on too long as it is
Same.
Remember this.
Nothing is sacred
Star Wars fans find difficulty in stomaching Lucas' mad scientist approach, but Lucas's pursuit for change is like Leonardo Da Vinci altering his masterful work, Ginevra de' Benci by adding or subtracting parts of the painting continually. Nothing is ever stationery, only just waiting for the next brush of change.
Lucas is very much a 'changer of visual narrative' with CGI tools at his disposal.
This one her kept a bit quiet 🤐
In the original theatrical cut, just prior to the podrace, Sebulba says to Anakin (in subtitles of course), “You won’t walk away from this one, Skywalker, you slave scum.” It’s since been changed to simply “You won’t walk away from this one, you slave scum.”
I liked that Sebulba used his name. Wish that hadn’t been changed.
Thanks, I didn't check the audio
I have the Japanese Laserdisc which also contains the theatrical cut. It was the highest quality release of the theatrical version as it obviously looked better than the VHS and also had a 6.1 channel Dolby AC-3 surround soundtrack.
Nice 👍
Damn, I really wanna get my hands on a rip of that AC-3 track.
IMO that's the one big letdown with the 4k, the pictures serviceable enough but the audio just doesn't have the same impact as the DD-EX version.
But then that's true for countless films, they really weren't scared of blowing peoples subs back in the 90's.
For anyone who wants to there's a "Phantom Menace Theatrical Cut" on the internet that you can find 🙃
Yar!
The puppet didn't look right, why they didnt just use the puppet from Empire is beyond me. He was 900 yrs old so he wouldn't have looked that much younger from Empire
Now I have seen this I see how odd the puppet looks and I don't see Yoda
@@VideoTasties yeah when I saw at the cinema I wasn't impressed with the Yoda just looked odd. Voice was exactly the same but that was it
He gets severely injured and that ages Yoda faster because of the stress.
It literally happens on screen in Revenge of the Sith, he falls and injures his back severely. That's why he doesn't try to kill Palpatine one more time.
I personally didn't mind the puppet looking too young.
Lucas planned this ahead.
He goes through a lot in the almost 40 years between Phantom Menace and Empire Strikes Back. But yeah the puppet doesn't quite look right. The thing is, for The Last Jedi (a film I despise but that's another conversation), they used the original puppet moulds from Empire to create their puppet and it still doesn't look right on screen. In still behind the scenes images, it looks great but looks awful on screen.
A lot of it comes down to lighting, cinematography and the way Frank Oz does the puppeteering.
Puppet looked better
The podrace and coruscant bits were added for the dvd - only change for the Blu Ray was Yoda I believe
Seems to be each release till the 2012 DVD was different
George is the Maestro. His updates have kept Star Wars watchable for many years. Bless his soul. I hope Disney lets him remaster the Prequel Trilogy again along with the originals.
I am curious to what he would do with them
I have the original DVD release and it's pretty much the same as Blu-ray except for the fact that Yoda is a puppet.
Thanks
And then a deleted scene had even MORE opening podrace stuff. Plus, there was a whole bit of lap two with recovery droids recovering podrace debris
I miss the scene where you can see the twillek Shakka in the Watto spectator box. I have her action figure, and now she is erased from the movie.
That's a shame
The CGI Yoda looks less scary than the Episode I puppet.
lol
Another glaring change is the Senate when Padme's decoy calls for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum. In the theatrical version, senators erupt into a chant of "Vote Now!" But in the edited version, the "Vote Now" chant is replaced with a general undecipherable uproar.
Thanks, I didn't check for different audio
Erm, it's not the Queen's decoy in that scene it's the real Queen(Padme) who calls for the vote of no confidence. In fact it's Padme as the real Queen in all the scenes on Coruscant, the decoy is only pretending to be Queen on all the other planets throughout the film.
@@mddbatman1588 Thanks for clearing that up. But what do you think about the absence of "Vote Now."
They did a re-release for 2 weeks of Phantom Menace in theaters years ago and I noticed the longer pod race scenes so you may have seen it in theaters with the extra shots in. Lucas is always adding shots. Even EMPIRE had extra scenes add to the end weeks after in was in theaters because the film went out without those shots originally so people who saw the film the first couple of weeks saw a different movie ending in 1980. Even the original STAR WARS had audio edits between the 6 Track Stereo , 2 track stereo and Mono Mixies causing people to remember lines others swear never were said but were dubbed weeks after the film hit theaters and added to prints going out. So you had 3 versions of STAR WARS out in 1977 with slight audio edits and extra lines.
Crazy what he tinkers with
I'm OG puppet Yoda all the way (watched ROTJ in the cinema as a youngling) but honestly, I think the CG version looks better.
I had forgotten about the puppet until I watched the VHS last week
When the movie was released the pod race was cut down in the theatrical because it was considered to long but it was all put back in for the 2001 dvd release to show the full race
Thanks seems I am the only one who didn't know that 🤣
The entire race was not put back into the movie. Some things were put back but not all the deleted pod race scenes made it back in. If you have the Blu Ray or the 4k UHD disc, look at the Phantom Menace deleted scenes and you will see pod race scenes that were not reinstated.
As always with Star Wars, the theatrical cut is superior to the revisionist versions.
George never learned
Oh man I had forgotten how the colors on 35mm theatrical film looks like complete Crap compared to Digital Restoration 4k
It's great when they make an effort with the 4K
I swear I also remember he changed some of the senators/aliens in the senate chamber for the DVD. Did he add in the E.T. aliens to replace some others? Or maybe it was some humans that he replaced with aliens? Either way, I remember someone got replaced in the Senate scene
I think the E.T's were there originally but he may have replaced others
I watched the vhs over and over that to this day whenever I watch the film I get startled by the new footage during the podrace and coruscant.
I must have watched it less than I thought
@@VideoTasties also the podrace and coruscant bits were changed for the dvd - not the blu ray. The only change for the Blu Ray was Yoda I believe
There were also some changes made to the doors and the viewscreen in the first scene when the Nemoidians are talking to Queen Amidala. Not sure why, I thought they were fine before.
I must have missed it as it didn't change time
For your own knowledge . Those things that you are calling scenes are named shots. A scene is composed of shots. A film is composed of scenes.
That is true, thanks
I don't remember the extra scenes not being there in the theaters. It was so long ago. I got used to the DVD/ blu-ray versions. And I really don't care that scenes were added. I didn't notice the changes till they were pointed out in this video. Besides, they don't take away from the enjoyment of the movie. And the movie didn't feel like it had changed at all. So I was perfectly fine with George Lucas' additions and changes. Plus, I feel the movie was only made better with the changes and additions. They didn't hurt the movie at all. This is just my opinion.
I am fine with it too
The 2001 onwards version contains the only Jar Jar moment, that I personally find anoying, with the extended Coruscant landing. And he is only the tip of the wirdness of that one scene. Maybe it'd just nostalgia because I grew up with the VHS version, but I think George should have let this scene end there.
Who knows what else he would change if he still owned them
You know,at first the cgi Yoda was kinda a shock for me having seen The Phantom Menace on VHS and then DVD so many times but I admit, it's better than the puppet. As for the extra bits added to the pod race, I don't mind that. I've always thought the pod race was incredible so for me the more the merrier on that.
I didn't like CGI Yoda at first but it makes sense to do it in all 3 films
@@VideoTasties That's a great point. It does make episodes 1,2 and 3 tie in better. Now if they ever changed Yoda in episodes 5 and 6, I'd be enraged.
Thank you...
THE ONE TO OWN ON VIDEO!
You're welcome!
A lot have to do with the run time that the studio sets up with theater so that it ends at a similar time as another movie so they end up with two theaters exiting in tandem!!!!!!!
Thanks
The laserdisc is the best version for the Theatrical Release.
I should track down a rip of it 😉
Happy share the copy i made from my Ld.
@@paulj5336 thanks my email address is in my channel info
I'm pretty sure the cable attachment scene during podrace was in theatrical release too. 🤔 literally haven't seen this film in over a decade. And that sand person taking pots hots was in a previous dvd version, maybe they were deleted scenes on previous formats and I am getting confused 😕
Not just me then 😜
@@VideoTastiesThe VHS version was itself edited from the theatrical cut, and most of those scenes were in the Theatrical version. It was part of creating a 4:3 version pan and scan that these shots were originally removed. Some of these shots were removed for the 4:3 version because they didn''t look good in that aspect ratio.
The only home release of the original theatrical cut is the Japanese laser disk release from 1999.
@@colliric thanks 👍
The cable detachment was most definitely not in the theatrical release, which I saw in the theater 5 times. It was the very first scene extension that immediately jumped out at me when I bought the DVD 24 years ago because I knew I had never seen that bit before. I noticed it before I ever noticed any those extra shots of pod racers or the alien guy selling concessions. There is also a 4K scan of a theatrical print floating around online which confirms that scene wasn't present. What I'm shocked more by is how much of the rest of the pod race sequence was shortened in the theatrical cut.
Great video Gareth 👍 I thought the cable bit in the pod race was in the theatrical cut too. At first I didn’t like that they changed the yoda puppet but I think it works better with cgi for the prequels. I need to watch this back again at home.
Thanks, maybe it was in another version we have seen
Yoda puppet's head was too flat on top. But i liked Os's puppetry work (movement, expression) better than the cgi Yoda.
I guess the fact he would be leaping everywhere in Clones it made sense to go all CGI
Yoda in 1999 really didn’t look that bad I mean I know it’s a puppet but I never minded that he was a puppet
Puppet was great I just didn't see it as Yoda that much
I noticed those differences since the 2001 DVD release of the Phantom Menace to be honest.
I think I skipped the DVD and went to Blu-Ray but never noticed the changes aprt from yoda
@@VideoTasties I think Yoda changed yo CGI for the Blu Ray release, but I am not entirely sure.
@@luisgarrido5185 yes it did
George Lucas is never happy.
He’s got it down to a fine art.
Whether he truly isn’t or was a way to milk the Cash cow is up for debate.
The Yoda puppet always looked ‘off’ even when compared to the original films puppet.
Just did this one on the sly, certainly doesn't look like a young yoda
@@VideoTasties To be fair, we don't really know what 100 years does to his species but yeah, it does look off. I'm glad they went digital for the later releases. There's a greater consistency between the three prequels and it's easier to believe that Yoda becomes the one in Empire than the Episode 1 puppet. There's no explaining how awful the Last Jedi puppet looked though and that one used the same puppet moulds from Empire.
1:43 I just noticed the difference between the original version and 📀 cut on the pod racing.
The bit with his mum?
@@VideoTasties yes.
It will be in my memiors
Good
I can appreciate the Yoda puppet and Frank Oz's performance here. But I also appreciate the CGI, but mostly in his face. With CGI he's far more dynamic in conveying his emotion. If I were involved in making this I'd probably want to put a camera on Oz while he performs and then copy his emotional performance onto the CGI Yoda. Also if Yoda is supposed to be younger I'd probably have made his hair noticeably thicker and a tinge darker.
I thought the podrace was already too long and didn't really need to be in the film. As much as I enjoy it, I know they're trying to get across that Anakin was a great pilot. But in terms of the story this should have been a failure for him. We should have seen his trials and tribulations as he grew older and seen him grow into an outstanding pilot and Jedi who Obi-Wan would come to think the world of. But what's done is done.
Yeah, the podrace definitely is yoo long
Dont think u need to speed it up bro' its fair usage policy so its fine - loads of other yt'ers do it - no yt strikes
