      David Gormley Craigslist and tortoise rescues are a good place to look for a little bit older tortoises but there usually are not many available that way. I’ve heard Tort Stork and Tortoise Supply are pretty good. Try to get captive bred tortoises and don’t get them from Petco or Petsmart because they are wild caught

    One of the big reasons that I love Clint and this channel is that he is bringing reptile keeping to the masses in a responsible manner. The frequent references to doing your research rather than just buying an animal because it's cute and the encouragement to rescue animals rather than promote an unsustainable trade in wild caught or sickly babies is why this channel deserves and needs far, far more publicity.

      L Mc so true! I agree with every point you made about what makes him a great spokesman for the reptile trade. I wish more of these channels pointed out everything he does and to collect in a responsible, caring way 👍🏻

      @nicholaslienandjaja1815 Před 4 lety +5

      Yup, and I support both responsible captive breeding and owning licenses for exotic pets, because completely banning them at all will result in more illegal trades, poaching, and exotic pet mills as well as tons of angry people who had done their research, are responsible enough, and want to keep a pet reptile/amphibian/predatory fish/farm animal/parrot/invertebrate, but are not allowed to due to the complete ban.

      Sid we found a baby res in April at a local lake. It was less than a week old and was lost on a dirt path in the heat. We picked it up and put it in a container with water in the shade. All day we played at the lake and discussed if we should take it home. We decided to take it home and she is now in a 30 gallon takin with rocks she loves to move and a floating basking rock. She was so happy when we put her in her big tank and swims all over and comes to us and begs. She also plays in the down pour of the filter like it is a ride! She is so funny! I know that she/he will get to a pretty good size and live a long life, but I think my hubby is happy with that because they seem to have bonded. She begs from him as soon as she hears his voice when he gets home from work. I wasn't sure we would be able take care of her correctly but after a lot of study on my part and she is healthy and happy.

      That sounds like my sister's red ear slider. She got him when someone brought him into the shelter where she worked at because he was hit when the person was mowing their grass. Luckily, he was fine. But my sister got attached to him by the time he healed enough to go back into the wild. That's how Franklin joined her family. He follows you all over in his tank, wanting attention, but then he panics and swims away if you try to pet him

Currently the little fell is walking outside just chillin around. My other one is as domestic as he could get. Very adorable and sometimes I share my bed to the little one and he just extends his neck to a makeshift pillow. Honestly Turtles and Tortoises are cute.

      The concept of a microhabitat.
      I’m familiar with cats, feral cats, and even small cat conservation efforts. So my first microhabitat design is premised on feral cats. Basically to take an abandoned lot otherwise on usable, but sufficiently sizable. To re-populate it with trees and other vegetation Beneficial to residence, specifically Cat. It should be modeled like, the birds of Eden. This is the largest free flight aviary in South Africa.

    This was an amazing introduction to the different types of tortoises and turtles out there, but also because you talk about responsibility in the first few minutes! I own a Russian (Morty the Tortie) and a Red-footed (Yurtle the Turtle) and respect them both so much as amazing reptiles! Russians don't need just a clear enclosure to not understand boundaries. Our Morty is in a dark enclosure and when he wants to get out for a walk, will repeatedly bang, scratch, and try to climb out. One thing I think you could have hit on with the Russian is that they need lots of exercise and/or a nice big enclosure, because in the wild they impressively walk 4 MILES A DAY (pretty impressive when you take their size into account!) Their also speed demons! My guy can run off in a flash, so you have to be careful to not lose sight of them.
    A big pro is their amazing personalities! Morty the Tortie reminds me of a grumpy old man who is actually lovable under their hard shell! He's very social and so smart! They're amazingly great pets, but just like you, I wish pet stores would not sell wild caught and teach buyers that they need a big enclosurer of about 6 square feet.
    Thanks so much for teaching responsibility in reptile ownership, something rare for channels because they are also breeding them. Also, I LOVE that you spoke about rescuing sulcatas. Amazing video! I subscribed instantly!

I had two semi aquatic turtles (red-eared sliders) when I was a teen, then my dad after three years gave them to the local aquatic zoo, because they grew into a few more inches than my parents wanted. I was quite heartbroken at the time. Now I`m considering with my husband to purchase one or two small turtles. They will be loved, not forced to go anywhere except in their tank and occasionally in the garden, with the loving care of both.

    Not really related to this video, but could you do a video on how to safely have little kids and reptiles live together? I've got a 2 year old daughter who loves snakes as much as I do, but before I get one as a pet, I want to make sure that my little one getting salmonella won't be a big risk. You mentioned in your Argentine tegu video that you've got a toddler, too. What kind of precautions do you have to take when she handles reptiles?

      1 top vegetarian reptiles (whether or not you would recommend them to beginners, whether or not they are captive bred, and if they make fun pets and not just really expensive setups that happen to have animals in them.)
      2 tops warning signs to not buy reptiles from someone (how to tell if they are falsifying records, selling wild caught and claiming it something else, and how to detect "reptile puppy mills" and are they really that bad)
      3 top animals in the pet market that you wish weren't for whatever reason (because i am sure with as much as you know you get sad when you see certain pets)

    Please don't spread false information. "Russian's are easy to house and because of their size don't require a big enclosure" is utter bullshit. Any care sheet will tell you a Russian requires at least a 4x8 foot enclosure. Saying otherwise gives people the idea to use tortoise houses meant for babies or ungodly small tanks which is nothing short of abuse.

    • @ClintsReptiles
      @ClintsReptiles  Před 6 lety +18

      I have never seen, and cannot find, a single care sheet that calls for an enclosure that size for a Russian tortoise. Most call for one about 2 feet by 4 feet. We actually do not make care guides, but we will make a more detailed video about Russian tortoises in the near future and we would love to direct viewers to quality care guides. If you have one, or better, several, that you trust, please share them with us and we can link them to our viewers. Thank you for the feedback.

      Clint's Reptiles Your welcome. Tortoiseforum is THE place for care and questions. I liked your opinion on Sulcata’s, anyone who buys a big one knows what they are in for and are less likely to re-home it. It really is a nice piece of logic, if you want a big one, buy one. It not only avoids dangers of care during growth, but also eliminates the user who gets a baby and is floored by what they become. If they want a baby, Russian males are pretty small full grown. And the coolest thing, big abandoned sully’s would get homes.
