  • Should any of the legions of American and worldwide 30-30 Winchester shooters desire reduced loads for range, recreation and barnyard pest control - they are fresh out of luck. Our 30-30 guns are much more versatile than what our factory ammo choices allow. Reloading provides the answer - so let's get to it. Unfortunately, we cannot show the actual reloading - go to RUMBLE or Patreon for the reloading sequences...

    I’ve been shooting reduced loads for years. Before WW2 most people had data on reduced loads because there was only 1 gun in the home dad shot big game and his children shot small game with the same rifle. You can get a 30-06 shooting a 175 bullet down to around 1400 fps.

    I thought about doing this for .270 for the exact same reason. We have a problem with coyotes and raccoons going after our chickens at the end of summer. I'll be using trailboss and a cast lead bullet. Trailboss is basically unobtainium, but I'm willing to find a recipe with unique once my powder runs out. Can't wait to see the performance of your 30/30 reduced loads.

    What a great cartridge. I've only ever had one in a .30-30 Contender pistol but what a great old cartridge. Its too bad the ammunition manufacturers don't make some really soft-loads for this cartridge.

      If you ever get a hold of Trail Boss powder? You can create soft loads by filling your case 65% full with any 150 grain bullet , in your 30-30. it's Safe and fun 😊 but do not compress or crunch your load! 😮

    Another good one, thank you. I had not considered these projectiles before. I shoot Cowboy Lever Action silhouette matches, and need a light, accurate load. My conundrum is: The general rule of thumb for .30-30 is, don't use round nosed bullets. Are you not concerned with the possibility of a primer detonation in the mag tube?

You can also use Hodgdon's 60% rule for H4895 for reduced loads with jacketed. That's 17.5gr for 150's, I have used 125's with great results. AA5744 is also a great choice for a little more juice.

    I use reduced 30-30 for most of the shooting. I load using W231 and a 135 grain Acme cast bullet at around 1200 fps. I’ll see if I can find some of the plated bullets from Berrys. They’d be just the ticket for a little more speed.

  • @DimaProk
    @DimaProk Před 3 dny

    Copper plated bullets produce more friction?? For all intended purposes they are same a lead. Since this is a staring charge reducing 0.3 grains in large case like that makes no sense. Considering that this load data was for 120gr bullet, I would actually bump up starting charge to 8gr. The reason is if you don't get enough pressure to seal the case in the chamber you'll end up with sooty cases and dirty chamber, not a good thing.

    • @ironDsteele
      @ironDsteele Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@Miguelperaza-c7v That is way too low with any bullet out of the .30-30. That is just over 20% case volume fill and less than 7500PSI peak pressure with a 110gr Campro bullet seated to 2.375" COAL. Don't go below 7 grs or above 8 grains with a .30-30 using Red Dot.

    I've never owned a tubular magazine fed centerfire rifle, one thing seems unusual. I know you'll have lighter recoil on these loads, is that why you use no cannelure or crimp? You aren't worried about bullets seating deeper from recoil while in the tube?
    Also, why do you keep 30-30 dies in a box labeled 38/357? Isn't that confusing? Do you just remember what's really in the boxes, as some sort of security protocol to thwart home invaders intent on reloading some ammo while they are there? "Just try to steal my 357 dies mister, boy will you get a surprise!"

    I hope those are good custom loads for you. Many of your loadings are indeed custom, not reloads. You are reusing the brass components, and sometimes the lead(range scraps), but not necessarily copying the original factory offerings. That is what it is all about.
