    Big publishers should take a note out of indie devs' playbook and make smaller, cheaper games with more creative freedom. Right now they seem to hope that bigger budgets and grander spectacles will draw in more gamers, but I sense that the market for that type of game is pretty much saturated while Nintendo and indie devs are showing time and time again that weird titles can introduce whole new demographics to gaming.

    i think what people are forgetting with this discussion is that even if game prices are technically going up less than inflation, peoples wages have been stagnating for far too long, meaning that we cant even keep up with the £60->£70 increase. the average person has less spending power now, so spare income is no longer spare for things like videogames :/

    Most people I know depend on sales from steam to be able to afford games these days. Part of the problem I think is we all just have less money to spend on leisure. Especially because of things like subscription models. What I found out especially is I couldn't really afford to regularly buy games for my switch, and nothing sale wise really ever lowered the prices with Nintendo products.

    What's really frustrating about Dreamlight Valley is there wasn't much to do in the game and all the updates were just cosmetic or new characters that gave the same quests you were already sick of. It was a very shallow game and the updates didn't add depth.

  • @RegularRaven
    @RegularRaven Před měsícem +6

    for me, I am only willing to spend money on a battle pass for one game because that’s what I can afford. today’s games are, like you said, becoming a monthly bill and that’s not great given the fact that everyday life outside of leisure is already so expensive. These gaming companies are so focused on paying their shareholders that they end up giving us lackluster content that isn’t worth the price they’re ultimately charging.

    The games that are being made right now absolutely deserve to cost way more than they do, but people are not willing or able to pay what their worth. The developers need to rethink the way they make games to make them smaller and less expensive to develop so that they come back to being appropriately priced at $60 or $70 again.

    I experienced this it with ebook pricing but I still don’t understand why they can’t make digital codes for games cheaper. If I’m not getting a physical cartridge I can play whenever, wherever for as long as I want, I can’t justify paying $40+ for a game.

    This video made me think of what the future of monetization in games is going to look like. Recently, Ubisoft came out with their “season pass” for Assasssins Creed ($70 game), which is a single player game. I’m worried that the subscription model might creep into the single player gaming experience, and content might become locked behind a paywall. Hoping that won’t happen, but I guess we’ll see!
    Ty for the video!

  • @shoggmommy
    @shoggmommy Před měsícem +3

    I will say out of all of the subscription models, I am completely fine with FFXIV (since the footage is being shared). They have sales very frequently for the entirety of the game, right now it's 60% off and the base game including all the expansions is 24$. And the new expansion that is coming out is 40$ for the base expansion.
    Yes I'm paying 15$ a month to play the game, but I will say I have consistently spent more money out of "F2P" bait trap than I have for XIV over the years. I do get that people don't have expendible cash, I don't either. However if it means I don't go out to eat once a month which equals the subscription, I'd rather do that. But I'd rather prioritize my time that way. I'm very happy with FFXIV and I always have something to do in it. The devs are really amazing and do actually care about the game and its player base. Though I fear this is a sort of dying thing when I compare it to WoW or other games that have "battle passes".
    I have major problems with AAA games and these so-called "AAAA" games that are not delivering on anything. So at the current? I play FFXIV and my various indie titles from Steam. I've got more than enough to last me for years at this point.

    • @Nifilway
      @Nifilway Před měsícem +2

      I have to agree, I feel like I spend more money with micro transactions than just a subfee so I limit myself to really only playing FFXIV. And I feel like I’m getting a quality product, definitely understand why people are averse to subfees tho, there’s also a free trial with no subfee too so people can explore the game a bit before they decide to commit.

    • @shoggmommy
      @shoggmommy Před měsícem +2

      @@Nifilway I completely understand being averse to it, and I'm in full agreement with your statements. I do think that XIV has handled it much better than really any other MMO. I really do like they've added a free trial for folks too and you can do a lot of things with that trial as well. I'm just afraid this sort of quality has become an anomoly within the gaming community. We've seen how other devs got really rude toward Larian Studios for their amazing BG3 game, and it does worry me a lot.

  • @Salaaaad
    @Salaaaad Před měsícem +2

    There are not many games where the $70 price tag is warranted. Like for example "The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom" while it's great, everyone was hyped for it, it's not a $70 game, it's on the same hardware, performance was a little iffy and it felt like at times a dlc for BOTW at times.
    Also micro transactions in games can be done right for the most part, I think just having a way to earn some in game currency for free helps save players money.

  • @maxpowers6738
    @maxpowers6738 Před měsícem +1

    Unfortunately in Nintendo's case, I can only see them increasing the price of their games due to inflation and as said games get more expensive to make. Wouldn't be surprised if they started charging $70 for all first party Switch 2 games.

    Nowadays, if you buy a complete game out of the box, that gets no micro transactions or dlc, people’s start claiming the game is dead, even though that’s how games just were back in the day.
    Kids need constant support or they get bored and developers need to get paid to offer constant support.
    There’s unfortunately no winning.
    Also, Chrono Trigger was 90 bucks (Canadian) new in the 90s. Just FYI.

    Gameloft has an amazing ability to introduce fun game mechanics, and then slowly suck the fun out of them through optimization. I've been playing one of their FTP mobile titles for 8 years, and it's always: 1) Introduce fun new minigame that's a bit too generous with rewards 2) slowly tighten up the rewards 3) Create a 'cash-in' feature that let's you skip the mini-games and get your micro-level rewards. They're the worst.

    I quit DDV for the same reasons, which makes me sad, I loved the base game then they just straight up said yeah no if you want to be able to access these characters which some of your quests will require you have to pay us more. I do think finally adjusting games for inflation by less than they would have risen actually adjusted for inflation isn't unreasonable. It's also worth noting that game prices in the cartridge days could get ridiculous, especially for RPGs that required extra memory for all the extra Japanese>English text. Phantasy Star IV and Final Fantasy VI cost $100 each in 1994 money.

    Games are too expensive ... if you want them to be. Sure, if you always want to play the newest game that comes with season passes or heavily lean into free to play games with microtransactions you will end up paying a ton of money. However, there are plenty of games to play without having to pay a ton of money. Games are on sale all the time, you can get a ton of games via humble bundles/monthly and if you don't mind not owning the games you can play more games than you'll ever have time to play via Gamepass. And the future of gaming lies within the indie scene anyway and those are on the cheaper side to begin with. Just think about a game like Stardew Valley that can offer you hundreds of hours of playtime for around 10 bucks.
    So no, I don't think video games are too expensive unless you choose them to be.

    1. Gaming is an expensive hobby.
    2. That $70 price tag is basically what you're willing to pay to be one of the exclusive first to play the game. All games go on sale. As long as you don't have "FOMO", you can eventually find a discounted price you'll agree with.
    3. Check to see if your library has video games. Some of them actually do. Now they don't have as extensive of a library like Blockbuster or GameStop, but might as well get a used copy of a game for a week than get a new one that will inevitably collect dust on your shelf. Word of advice, if your library has game consoles, you may have to buy memory cards (or buy your own controller, joystick drift is definitely real when it comes to overused controllers)

Maybe sometimes a fun DLC that has his reason for existence (imma just pretend Pokemon Company isnt Nintendo here, lately i really hated Pokemon Games and stuff they make). F2p Games i never pay in. Not becuase i dont want to support the devs, but because i feel like the value just isnt there. 20€ for a skin, litereally just a texture for the price of a whole indie game with great art design, interesting story and hours of fun? Hell no. I just dont see it. Oh and speaking about Battle Passes, i just dont get them because i dont want to support fomo. And thats also why i dont have Splatoon 3. Like why? Why cant you make a Battle Pass that isnt time limited. A Battle Pass that maybe rotates over a year but if you really need to, you can time travel like in Animal Crossing.
