- In this one, we are doing a full review and play of the infamous Barcode Battler, from Tomy. Why did this system fail in most areas apart from Japan, lets find out!

Oh my GOOODNESSSS! I am in tears, this was one of the BEST THINGS from my childhood. I suddenly thought of it today, and tried looking it up and found your video. It was so very brilliant, though I had a completely different set of cards to your version, must have been a different game. It really interacted with the human mind, you would see these incredible characters fighting in the story, like when you read an awesome book. Much better than having to see it play out on a screen, you really lived the experience.
I absolutely loved my barcode battler
Sounds like maybe a newer version. I had one of the others it was just text based. You could make your own cards but nothing I found came close to the ones that came with it. Don't think I ever got passed level 2. I think I may still have this in the box in the loft
If you bought yours in North America it came with different looking hero cards. Most of the monster cards used the same art with a few exceptions. Half of the item cards were different too.

I loved my Barcode Battler. I was the only kid in the entire school who had one. They thought I was crazy, but not as crazy as the Japanese kids when they found that Ramen barcode :D
Anyway I have 2 of them, one in box and with most of its original cards.
I was very chuffed to complete the main game back then. A lot of the fun for me was to have all my relatives cut out barcodes for me to try! I had piles of barcodes and as soon as I got a load from a relative I was scanning, categorising , looking for that special code. I did manage to find some really powerful codes but nothing like that Ramen one in Japan. I remember seeing that on the news, the Japanese national Ramen shortage due to kids grabbing the packs for that specific barcode. I then had tons of fun making my own cards, thinking up names for the items or warrior/wizard I just found. Lol I even tried drawing them. I remember one code I found improved my attack greatly, I named it the BFG way before I had ever heard of Doom.
As for it being "statistics" well, its an RPG of sorts. All JRPS are heavy on the stats and modifiers. I guess thats why it did so well in Japan. Its Final Fantasy battles, using barcodes taken from the stuff you just ate.
dlarge6502 lol, you’ve got some good points there, I thought it just randomly assigned characters to barcodes you scanned, didn’t realise they had hidden barcodes. Bet don’t work with them now and can’t get origional barcodes.
I had this as a teen and would cut the UPC codes out of everything I had and try them. I remember Charms blow pops had made a monster that regenerated health and it was like discovering a hidden cheat. Loved this.
I and my brother had that! We had superstitions like how you would need to click the L-BATTLE just when one of the leds flashes and you'll get a power hit.
This system was AMAZING! I remember defending its value to very dubious friends quite a lot and, also, every single barcode I ever cut out and used was kinda underpowered rubbish - but it was still awesome!
Same experience here. I wonder if we can find the golden barcode now
@@tonyppe I have a very devious character / item combo which can overwhelm an opponent while cutting two of their stats in half. Of course, I have the ability to print my own barcodes and I've reverse engineered some of the algorithms used by the Barcode Battler, so it could be considered cheating...
Great video!
Got this one Christmas about 1992/93, I was about 10 years old at the time. I thought it seemed a pretty cool idea but I could never figure out how to play it so I never bothered with it! I bet it's still at my mum's house somewhere.
I mean who on earth thought this was a good idea?! Maybe in the 1970's.... Thankfully never had the torture of it.
Actually would have been good in the 70s, not in the 90d
Man I remember that track suit . Lol I feel old , I had it and it was the track suit for England in World Cup 1990 and the semis still hurt to this day lol.
THE RETRO SCENE yep, it’s sort of become my signature, wear it in live shows and at events, love it
I had this as a kid. Didn't understand English at all, just scanned cards and tried to do something. Wasted many hours with this even thou I didn't know how to play.
Wow, must have been fascinating to you.
Received this as a birthday gift, lmfao, straight into the bin 😉
I had one of those growing up. Still don’t know how it works. Still spent plenty of time with it.
I hated how meticously you had to place the barcodes on a card then they often turned up to be nothing. The placement of code (often upside down and trimmad so code started at bottom edge) was tedious. Gave up after the best code I could find was a one-shot that was worse than the included one (Warrior only gear).
I've got one (Actually my 2nd one) and I thought it was good.
johntrevy1 well, it would be a boring world if everybody had the same opinion. I will be playing it again though :o)
@@RetroGamerVX It might grow on you. Haha.
Maybe, once I get to know it more and ain't constantly having to look up what I'm doing. Maybe I'll become a Barcode Battler professional sometime and you'll see me on tv in the Barcode Battler ring! :o)
I was watching a video on another famicom product that mentioned this product and I remember as a kid hearing about this and thinking how cool that sounded and I really wanted one. But I forgot all about it until I saw it in another video today because it didn't become the success that the company was hoping it would be. And after watching your video of it no surprise why. It seems like the company had a really awesome idea they just weren't Forward thinking enough to actually put any kind of real game to it with graphics and sound had they actually made this a real game with graphics and sound and gameplay along with the barcode it probably would have taken off and done pretty well. And probably what they were predicting with like the grocery bill hikes and stuff like that might have happened and they actually put somet. But as it seems and it's final form it's nothing more the calculator that randomizes and plays with numbers. Sad because that could have been something awesome they really screwed up because chances are they had an only add a real game to it and it probably would have sold like a hot cakes
I'm wondering if someone might think it's a good idea to make a QR Code battle game next! 🙄😒
I owned one as a kid and I wish I still had it! Sad
I never understood the interest in it, suppose it's good if you like stuff like dungeons and dragons.
@@RetroGamerVX I actually went on ebay after watching this a found one and it should be coming in a few weeks from UK lol
@@alexchinchilla821 Glad to know I inspired you, hope you enjoy, I still have this one on display :)
Pokewhat? Digiwho?
Remember seeing it but couldn't understand what if did
Yep, suppose the adverts can be a bit confusing.
$300 for this I think I’ll pass
Just had a readom memory of wanting one as a kid. Also for in aug 2020 a free app exists
I had all three systems and loved barcode battler just as much as the other 2
I don’t know what the other 2 are?
@@RetroGamerVX game boy and saga game gear lol
It looks shit lol I remember seeing adverts for it at the time and thinking that looks amazing! Wish I had it but never did or saw one, I was probably blessed not to have one lol I'd have been bored to tears with it, was better off with the old green screen game boy brick
Meh Skannerz is much better than this
