  • Extended highlights from the Hawaii - BYU game played December 8, 2001 in Honolulu. BYU came into the game undefeated at 12-0, ranked and bowl bound, but on this day they ran up against a Warrior team led by Nick Rolovich playing his finest game in his final game as a Warrior. What ensued is the stuff of football legend.

Update. Nick Rolovich was named the new head football coach for Hawaii. Hopefully, Rollo can bring back some of the excitement and glory to the program.

Peter Rodby Didn’t Brian Smith call plays last year? Plus the run and shoot is supposed to be pass heavy which is why it seems we hardly run the ball. It takes the right players for a system to work, you can’t just want a team to run the ball more when we don’t have the oline or rbs to be successful at it. Look what happened when we tried to run a more balanced system under chow, our offense sucked! And as far as coach stability, Hawaii will always be a stepping stone position. We just don’t have the money to compete with the power 5 schools to keep our coaches from leaving.

I get so frustrated with Hawaii. There's so much talent here on the islands. Yet they waste the vast majority of the scholarships on out of state talent. Give the top local talent a full ride and than scout outside talent.
It can be difficult running the ball in a spread offense. Back in the Jones era Hawaii had a lot of success running the ball. It's sad to see Rolo leave to Washington St. He took the better opportunity to feed his family. Now we are back at square one.

@@islandfantasy5931 nah it’s not that we don’t try and recruit the top local talents but more the powerhouse schools are going after them now.
As for our current team, I thought coach graham did a good job considering the circumstances. I think the offense should be fun this year and excited to see Calvin Turner with a full season. He’s a legit nfl prospect.

The local boys on signing day always talk about not getting a scholarship to play for Hawaii. They end up taking the full ride to Oregon state or some other college. The last time I checked to see how many scholarships was available to the local talent was 2 to 4 scholarships a year.

@bizzleortizzle I say this is one of Hawaii's biggest wins. But when they beat the number 9 team Iowa in 1989, beating Byu in 1990 when Ty Detmer won the heisman earlier that day 59-28, winning the holiday bowl in 1992, or beating nebraska in 1955 after being a 50 point underdog, beating Boise state in 2007, beating fresno in 2008 at fresno. But I got respect for BYU they usually have a good team so thanks for the luck.

...And BYU was complaining of WHY they weren't even being considered late in 2001 for Nat. Championship game! I'll tell you why. First of all, they shoulda lost the holy war game. 7 of their games were in the Mountain West. 8 of their opponents had losing records. I mean really bad...Cal 1-10; Wy 2-9; Nev, SD St, Miss St "all" 3-8; Tulane 3-9; etc. Also, not one of their reg. season opponents were even ranked!!

BYU had such a terrible defense that year. Allowed 35 vs Tulane, 31 vs UNLV, 34 vs Utah State, 33 vs Air Force, 34 vs Colorado State, 34 vs Wyoming, 38 vs Mississippi State, 72 vs Hawaii, and then 28 vs Louisville. Good thing we had an offense who was averaging nearly 50 per game. We still hung 45 on Hawaii with our backup QB playing.
