They only did it cause if I remember correctly, Alabama was banned from a bowl game for a year or two, so whoever was in charge of the schedule making thought it would be a good idea play Hawaii in Hawaii to end the season as a “bowl” game.
If you look more objectively in the last 10 years Bama has played regular season games with Southern Cal, Wisconsin Penn State Clemson (not playoff or bowl games) West Virginia Florida State Louisville
Also Virginia Tech. None of these games were at home. All neutral site games for season openers.

Alabama was on probation in 2002/03 so they scheduled the last game of the season in Hawaii both years so the players could have something like a bowl game experience.
I was at this game, 9 years old with my dad. Best thing about that day was the dippin' dots I got. :)

I was there, and Alabama fans were great! Alabama at that time, were on a NCAA five years probation, and two years ban on bowl games. That's why Alabama schedule Hawaii to be their last unofficial bowl game of the season. What better place to have it there in Hawaii, showcasing Alabama football bowling in the Aloha State. Awesome game! Let's go TUA! BAMA!

Great win for Hawaii..This was the rematch from the previous year. Bama played in the islands back to back years..then a couple years later Hawaii played in Tuscaloosa..It was a 3 game contract series signed between the schools...
I didn’t know Bama lost this game. I turned the channel when it was 14-0 and never checked the score again. Pretty awesome to come here and find this.

Hawaii Football program may not have been around as long as some of the great mainland universities well known in College football but Hawaii has had it's fair share of Polynesian/Island Boys come off the Rock and had great careers over time and yet still producing great players!!

To this day this is my favorite Bama game and I am an Alabama fan. Bama fan's were so psyched going to Hawaii for the game. Hawaii fan's were so awesome, banners saying "Sweet home Hawaii!" Plus, I knew Schula was done for after losing to Hawaii and Auburn that season. 😂
Actually Alabama was the only SEC team that I respected. I know the hype behind the SEC and how tough their conference schedule is, but they are one of the few that is not afraid to travel OUTSIDE of their state to play an out of conference opponent. They always schedule the easy teams they can beat so that they could have higher rankings and more wins. Like a lot of Big 10, Big 12 teams wouldn't travel outside of their homes to go elsewhere,
I was impressed with how many fans that follow their teams and make the trip over here. They were nice fans and weren't obnoxious like many other teams who thinks that they are better than you. Even the games at Alabama were classy fans. I'm glad that Tua was able to play for you guys. Oh well, now UH has to try to rebuild as it will be hard as we cannot recruit the 3,4 or 5 star recruits like most major colleges can.

Because back then Alabama was under probation, had limited scholarships and a 2 year bowl ban. This game was scheduled as a substitute bowl game. Not really much of an upset, Alabama was very bad then.

This is why I'm a Hawaii fan. Lived there for 10 years and even watched the Rainbows play my alma mater, Arkansas, in the 90s. They were toe to toe with the Hogs until they ran out of gas late in the third quarter.
I was at that game but wasn't it in '87? I believe it was Al " The Samoan Sackman" Noga's final game. Didn't Arkansas' kicker boot a kickoff through the uprights?
@@stevencardenas6094 Yes, '87. Noga was a beast. Arkansas had their hands full. My girlfriend at the time bought our tickets as a gift and even made me a shirt that was half Hawaii colors and half Arkansas red. And the stadium was actually half full, if I remember correctly. Good crowd.

Took my dad to this game as we were season tix holders. I remember the tide walking in the stadium with the cheering fans. Almost intimidating... lost my voice that day. Soon after it was the Saban era. Wonder how old Tua (my neighbor) was or if he was at the game as a child.

these were the days hawaii was the only school interested in polynesian players. Nowadays they leave the islands to play at bigger schools :(.
BYU, Utah, USC, and all the PAC 10 were recruiting Polynesians. Now the SEC was a different story. Only Jesse Mahelona and later on Masoli were able to breakthrough there

For those wondering, the reason Alabama played this game is a combination of a few reasons: The WSU Cougars wanted out of the game after switching their Nov. 17 road game at UCLA to Dec. 7 so they could participate in a national ABC-TV tripleheader. WSU coaches didn't want to play University of Washington in Pullman on Nov. 23, then have to travel to and from Hawaii for a nonconference game before playing UCLA in a game that was expected to have bowl consequences. Alabama agreed to travel to Hawaii as a 'regular season' game to encourage players not to transfer and to make up for the fact that they could not go to a bowl game due to being on probation (nevermind they wouldn't have made a bowl game anyway). They encouraged fans to travel because its freaking Hawaii and the fans did just that.

@Mico Berta the probation was for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Both games were scheduled because of the bowl ban. Its actually the reason there is a Bowl game in Hawaii now. They realized how well teams would travel because, you know, Hawaii lol.

Here’s an interesting fact about that game. It wasn’t really about Hawaii winning the game. What was interesting about the game was the fact that Hawaii fans actually booed the quarterback now head coach Timmy Chang any interviews? He wasn’t very happy about that.

Nonsense. They were legit in 2006 with Colt Brennen and Nate Ilowa (sp?) They went 10-3 and beat the crap out of Arizona State in the Hawaii bowl.
Went undefeated the next season and lost big to a really talented Georgia squad. Your receivers were top notch that year. Devon Bess comes to mind.

Jonathan Dravis Davone Bess, Jason Rivers, and Ryan Grice-Mullens all went over 1000 yards that season. CJ Hawthorne put up numbers as well. I was shocked not a single one of them were able to have a productive NFL career.

I'm sure someone posted a video of unranked Texas A&M beating #3 Auburn on the road on November 8, 2014. There's also unranked Georgia beating #9 Auburn on November 12, 2016. Auburn had about an 80% chance to win that game according to the FPI, and they were favored by about ten points.

This was the 2nd year of their bowl ban and they didn't have a great recruiting class because of this. Also, they took a trip to Hawaii to play them the year prior as their season finale. So I guess they felt that if they aren't going to a bowl game, they might as well play a game in a stadium that host a bowl game.

Overall, despite a new coaching staff, expectations remain high for another good year. Not quite a NY6 type of year like last year but a good year nonetheless. When Gary Andersen was last at USU he lead us to an 11-2 season and almost beat Wisconsin on their home turf. I think Boise will take the Mountain Division again like they usually do but Utah State should at least challenge again. We do have a rough schedule to play though. We travel to Wake Forest and LSU along with conference road games at San Diego St. and Fresno St. Luckily, we get BYU and Boise St. at home this year. I would expect about an 8 win season with Losses to LSU, Wake, Boise St. and San Diego St. Possibly 7 wins even which would be a disappointment I don't see anything less than 7 wins. I do see us beating perennially overrated BYU as that is in Logan and we've beat them 2 years in a row. BYU plays a rough schedule to start the season and by the time they get to Logan in November they'll be pretty beat up. Sorry for the long explanation but there's all you need to know about Utah State this season.

Sweet Home Alabama could be heard from anywhere you were standing in any part of the parking lot. Every single fan encounter that I could remember was straight classy from Bama. That was the first time I heard of roll tide roll. Bama fans were just as loud as us Hawai’i fans. Great atmosphere
