This is What It's Like to Fly Alone When You're Blind

  • Hello people, I'm Kirsten. I recently flew to Alaska to visit my parents and I thought I'd vlog the experience for those curious about what it's like to fly alone as a blind person. As you'll see in this video, blind people have to put up with a lot of inconveniences like not knowing where anything is, not being able to access the bathroom or food options whenever we want, and even not being able to communicate with the airport workers if those workers do not speak English.
Also, guess what? I'm actually trying to post on Instagram every day! Yes, I said it, every day. I have no idea whether this will last, but I'm really going to try so you should follow me there so you don't miss anything. My Instagram is:

Awesome! Nice to meet you! Since a lot of people have a hard time understanding that not all blind people are the same, let me know if you have any video ideas or if you and I can do videos on the same topic but from different angles. That would be fun.

@@SmileforaSecond I don't make videos on this channel but I'll be starting to make them soon with a friend on a channel called the blind journey. I'll comment properly from that channel.

I am blind also. And I would like to fly by myself. Just to get that experience

You should! If you have orientation and mobility skills it will be a bit easier for sure, but anything you can do to make yourself more independent is another tool in my opinion.

@@SmileforaSecond yes I do have training in that. Yeah sometimes I want to go somewhere. And family members don’t want to go with me. Thank you

My favorite part of the video, aside from the fact that you have a turd emoji pillow, is when your guide dog saw your mom!

It would be terrifying for me going through an airport with no sight. On the other hand, riding in a single engine private plane, there have been times I wish I couldn't see.

A lot of times, blindness has very little to do with the anxiety of airport travel. If you were newly blind and have absolutely no skills (such as orientation and mobility), yes, that would add to the anxiety. But a lot of times for many people, it isn’t necessarily the lack of eyesight that is stressful. It is all of the other things that are stressful as demonstrated in this video. I am speaking from someone who is blind. I can tell you that if the world was much more accessible and people excepted the fact that I do not have working orbs, traveling and other things would be so much easier. For me, blindness is nothing. It is the other stuff that is stressful.
