- Legend of Legaia's battle system is one of the greatest ever. This turn-based JRPG came out in the golden age of the PS1 era and then... everyone forgot about it? Is this classic lost to time, or can it make a comeback with a polished remaster on the Switch?

Did you play Legaia back in the day? How do you think it holds up today?
I played it back in the day - had a lot of fun with it but it was tough!
The boss battles are seriously challenging -_-@@diogenes3300
It is tough!! @@diogenes3300
Those bosses are brutal @@gnosis_gaming
I had this game and loved it. I forgot about it until a video about it appeared in my CZcams feed. Now I want to play it again.
Legaia was the first RPG that I've played with my sister, and one of our first games together. It has a formative place in my memories and my heart, and it became an annual ritual for us to try and finish it again. We played it all the way through, learning through every challenge 90's RPGs presented: the need for grinding, constant deaths, item hoarding, savescumming, strat guides on magazines; we even made our own notebook with a walkthrough, moves list, treasures etc.
Legaia taught me about a lot of stuff, but mostly it imbued in me a sense of vastness and travel that revolves RPGs overall, and that shapes part of who I am today. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's one of the core games in my heart.
I'm really glad to have found this video, and your channel. It's a shame the treatment Legaia got over the years, and deep in my heart I still hope for some sort of return, done recognition of this amazing game.
Welcome to the channel, and I'm glad it reminded you of your childhood! I also played Legaia when I was very young with my cousin. The world felt so mystical.
this game came out when there's no internet yet. so discovering arts by mashing buttons feels so good. story is 10/10 and will easily get 20-30 hrs of your life if you want to complete it.
tornadoooo flaaammmeee
Haha I definitely read 'tornado flame' in Vahn's voice
@@gnosis_gamingI thought he said “Kaiser flame”. Figured it was a Japanese equivalent.
I had the strategy guide so that wasn't an issue lol
The music is by far one of THEE best aspects of the game. You can still hear the songs and remember where you were at in the game when you heard them.
It's not that the club is heavier, it's that each character specializes in a weapon and if they don't have their kind of weapon, it will make the input command bigger because they're not used to it. o:
Ohh, I see!
Great video though btw! I love hearing about my favorite games lol
The exception to that rule is the astral sword because nobody can use that properly. It's an awesome looking sword but I don't ever use it. Vahn can't use his Miracle Arts if it is equipped and that is much more important than the negligible amount of damage that gets added by the astral sword.
@@user-ql9hf9ez6m yes but I still use it for a short while until I get something better lol
What do you like most about this game? @@hazelXin223
I was obsessed with this game as a kid. Played it first at my older cousin's house and he gifted it to me because he wasn't going to play. I never got past the huge tower city later in the game. I don't know if the game was bugged or my undeveloped brain couldn't figure it out but I never managed to remove the statue blocking the stairs. I need to emulate it one of these days just for the sake of nostalgia.
Legend of legaia blew all the jrpg back then, great story, unique gameplay, great music
One of the top10 best psx of all times
Hey dude, this game was a huge part of my childhood ❤ one the reasons i got into learning English (i am from brazil) you got me emotional watching this.. so many memories, the soundtrack, the gameplay.. i dont care what people say they will never make games like those nowadays i can FEEL the passion from creators. I just subscribed.
Thanks for watching! This game is really special to me.
I used to watch my dad play it, and I tried too, but couldn't figure out what to do. I literally forced myself to learn to read to play this game . I would recommend this game, it's really fun and that combat system was super fun, really sad no one else used that style of combat.
I loved this game when I was a teenager and loved it even more when I re-played it just a few years ago. One of the greatest things about this game was that the game got significantly better as the story developed. It becomes more captivating, mysterious, and magical the further you went into the game. I still remember watching the ending for the first time and I could easily tell this was a story told and developed by people who were seriously passionate about what they created. With good art you can always tell how devoted the creator was.
The end still gives me goosebumps just remembering what happened. Gotta go back and do it all over again soon lol
No, non lo abbiamo dimenticato.
Fantastico gioco che ho amato tanto!
Insieme a ff7 e LOD!
I got this when my friend told me about it back in 1998/1999. I always enjoyed playing it, but never managed to beat it until recently.
I'm not entirely sure what prompted me to pick it back up, but I finally played it through to completion in early 2022. This game is a bear to emulate because of a sequence 3/4 of the way through the game that involves the characters going back in time. For some reason, that sequence causes a PS3 running the disc version of this game to crash and freeze, and even certain emulators will encounter the glitch.
I played it on one of the earlier PS2 models (which still had PS1 components in them) and got through it just fine. That said, even with a set of component cables, it wasn't nearly as nice to look at as emulating it would have been, but you get used to it fairly quickly.
Legaia was very clearly a labor of love by its creators, and its a shame the franchise dropped off after the disappointing PS2 "sequel."
To clarify, all "Fat" PS2 and the first generation of 'slim" PS2s still had the PS1 chip, which meant that they were better at emulating PS1 games (as it only had to software emulate the PS1's GPU.) The later models of the Slim PS2 had more issues with compatibility, as those had switched to full software emulation at that point. I may be wrong about that, however.
I’ve playing through Legaia on the Provenance App on my iPhone. It’s delightful and a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane
I love this game and it was my first JRPG since I was a kid. People seem to rememeber Legend of Dragoon but not this game and I'm sad about that.
Wonderful retrospective ❤ gotta love the sound design on those attacks! I remember crying a couple of times as a kid
This is the only game that truly produces that feeling of nostalgia in me.
Haven’t played this recently, but was fortunate enough to finish it when I was younger, and definitely agree that Legend of Legaia deserves a remaster someday!
(And hearing that theme again for Mei’s father, and knowing what happens for the ACTUAL namesake for that theme, felt like a gut punch :’) I’ll never forget the incredible storytelling this game has)
I was able to find this at a pawn shop for some price between $6 and $10 in high school. I play it every so often. I recently played it yet again 😊
Gnosis thank you for making this video highlighting one of my favorites games on the original PlayStation. Legend of Legaia and The Legend of Dragoon are two games that I feel don't get the flowers they deserve, Legaia more so. You definitely highlighted some great aspects of the game. I mean the art system was an innovative interesting and a well executed combat system. In the days before guides being more prevalent the thrill of learning a new art by accident was an indescribable feeling regular, super, hyper and miracle arts were a spectacle. The encounter music and boss music live rent free in my mind and I would agree it is one of better soundtracks top to bottom I have heard. Seeing gear not just weapons on your avatar was a first for me you could tell a lot of love and passion was put into this game. The summons were awesome to collect and master, the monsters were varied, boss fights were freaking boss fights and if you were not or even if you were prepared you were getting knocked down. Caruban, Zeto, The Berserker, Gaza and Xain just to name a few knocked me down not knowing what to expect. I can not say enough good things about this game. I just wish it was available on newer hardware because it is something that I would want to experience again. I honestly plan on naming my daughter Noa one because I the name and two because I love this game.
I haven't had the opportunity to play this, but was always intrigued by the combat system. After watching this, I can tell I would love the music and overall atmosphere as well. Keep making tasteful content like this!
There's nothing quite like it after all this time.
You can try emulating it
Oh me and have never forgotten one of the GREATEST most under rated games of ALL Time Hands Down. My personal favorite RPG
This was my favorite PS1 jrpg along with Xenogears, Parasite Eve, and Legend of Dragoon.
This is probably my favorite RPG of all time even over Chrono Trigger. I normally do a playthrough of it every year. Really wishing we could get a remaster or even a new game in the franchise altogether.
One of the best psx games I picked it out for my day when it came out.
I played it about two months ago, after not playing it since maybe 2006 or so (holy crap, typing that made me feel so old!)
It holds up really well when (legally 😅) emulated on modern hardware, especially if you have a hotkey for fast-forward! All the battle and seru animations are awesome, but as an adult with limited time, I can't afford to be playing these old RPGs at original hardware speeds 😂
This was one of those demos I played over and over until I finally found it for 20$ and was able to get it. I loved it so much!
The demo was really good! I think it came with my copy of FF8 or something... Or maybe with Brave Fencer Musashi?
I'm playing thru this right now on DuckStation PSX Emu (Just finished up reviving the Genesis Tree at Jeremi), as I never actually beat the game when I played it as a kid. Of noteworthiness, the Spirit command also raises your defense stat for 1 turn, which is useful if you know an enemy is about to use a large attack (like when Zeto uses "Call Wave" to telegraph his powerful group attack "Big Wave" that does like 500 dmg to all characters). If you use Spirit before attacks like this, you're much more likely to survive them as long as you have the HP to weather the storm. Also, if you have the patience, its totally worth the grind to acquire Viguro in the East Voz Forest boss fight. Equip the Ivory Book (Increases Seru absorption rate by 30%) on Vahn beforehand and ensure he gets the finishing blow on either Viguro to acquire the Seru. Having Viguro's "Plasma Storm" attack this early in the game is OP; almost like having the "Beta" Enemy Skill in FF7 on disc 1 and is super handy for using on Zeto. Just make sure you've found all the hidden Magic Leafs to restore your MP, as you won't be able to buy any until after destroying the Drake Kingdom Mist Generator.
I couldn't beat it as a kid either -- the boss fights can be downright cruel haha.
I've never heard of this game before, but it sounds right up my alley.
I really like the way you speak. It is not emotionless and monotone but calm and intentional.
It's too bad the only way to play it these days is on the PS1 !
@@gnosis_gaming I'm playing it currently on DuckStation PSX emulator and it looks and plays great!
Legend of Legaia was one of my first games ever, and my first RPG, for me, it doesn't hold up too bad. The worst part would be the graphics, but in combat they still look pretty decent in my opinion, the story isn't anything crazy, specially for people used to stuff like FF, but it's good enough to keep you interested, I'd say. And in terms of combat I have yet to find a game with a similar combat system, it is SO MUCH FUN, worth giving it a try for that alone, imo
This is one of the BEST PS1 RPG I have played. I hope it will be remastered soon.
Me too. So many unique things about this game, including the atmosphere.
I played it a year or two ago and it holds up great! Enjoyed every bit of it
Oh nice! Had you played it as a kid?
I think it still holds up. This game is hella fucking good. Played it a ton as a kid
Honestly I played it as much as I played 7.
I have it on my phone with epsxe app
I love this game! I remember I couldn't finish it, I got stuck in Sol tower. I then replayed it as teen and finally could finish it. The story is very dark and also sad at the ending. The Conkram part is very sad.
I'm re-playing this currently on Duck Station PSX emulator, as I never beat it as a kid (I was never able to beat the boss Xain in Octam). This time i'm also taking my time to make sure all of my characters are acquiring the Serus along the way which has been super helpful in both leveling and having diversity in attacks for higher-level enemies.
I streamed this recently and I still love it. Definitely worth playing at least once in your lifetime.
But your Twitch says you last streamed 9 years ago.
What's your stream? Please drop the link!
@@kloroformd /feyht ? I don't stream often but it was maybe like 4 days ago lol
@@hazelXin223 Your CZcams page says "TheFeyhtofGaming". Might wanna change that.
This was a big favorite of mine. I put many, MANY hours in (thank you sol tower), and the story was really well done for the time
Now I wanna go dig out my old ps1 😢
Do it!
Those Viguros in the west forest are the literal worst
I only played the sequel and I don't recall the battle system being engaging. It had a combo system but it amounted to just slap a bunch of buttons and the enemies died
Oh you think so? I always found the boss battles extremely difficult and engaging ☺
Such a great game! My fav rpg of that generation. The music always got me pumped to fight.
The music is so good 😭
Music is underrated in this game
Just for your info, this video and the new ff7 one got me to sub. Cheers!
Oh, nice! You clicked through to the Legaia video 😁 I was hoping someone would do that.
@@gnosis_gaming No sorry, I didn’t notice if you had the Legaia vid linked, I actually went to your channel and scrolled your video list til Legaia caught my eye. Wish this game got the following it deserved! You nailed it with the music btw. Phantasy Star IV is another old legendary classic that people don’t talk about enough.
nice video
Thanks for clicking! Did you play this game?
Not played this but really liked dual saga
I had this but not Duel Saga. Was the battle system still really cool?
I only wish Legaia 2 wasn't the end of this series. This game still goes hard. Love it. It was always exciting discovering a new art. Noa and **** always gets me. Anyways replayed legaia 1 and 2 recently and I still loved them both. 2 is definitely leaning into nostalgia a bit for the enjoyment.
Yeah, it seems that 2 may not have aged as well, surprisingly!
It's still fun though, just kinda slow and the story is not as interesting. Glad there are still people discussing/discovering this game. It needs to be remembered.@@gnosis_gaming
Never forget and never stop telling people about how great it is
We shall see a return eventually 🎉
At least a remaster would be nice!
@@gnosis_gaming exactly 💯
I think the only problem with it in today's gaming world is battles can take FOREVER. It's believable that 3 hours of the gameplay is just boss battles, assuming you win them all the first time. And most of that is watching animations.
Hey they're cool, but there's a point where it just starts getting repetitive to watch. Many RPGs around this time has this issue. If it gets a remaster, there needs to be a mode to shorten things you've seen before.
If that's something you tolerate, I totally recommend this game. As for me, I will play it for nostalgia, but I couldn't play it for the first time again.
I think in the 90s we were all so impressed with the graphics that we really didn't mind the long animation sequences. Also, this was before smart phones and I do think our attention spans were all a tiny bit longer haha 🤣
@@gnosis_gaming I tolerated it better as a kid, but even then there was some things that were grating. Late-game FF7 was worse though. Mime Omnislash and Quadra KOTR...
Legaia is an amazing game:D Except finding every item i %100 ed the game. I beat everything, max leveled. There is nothing i didn't.
The sequel is good too. It has a nightmare ish long 100 battle challenge. So hard.
I had the sequel as well, which is a good game, but it didn't make as much of an impression on me.
This game is so amazing. Unfortunately I can't find a way to emulate it where it doesn't get stuck at some point in the game, and my disc is scratched and has the same issue.
Oh really? I've always had a good experience with OpenEmu
Good game but could have used more character and plot development
I do the PS2 sequel was pure CRAP and NEITHER the 1st or 2nd game got a PSN version of either one.
I owned the PS2 sequel and never quite got into it
Did you play Chrono Cross?
I only played it once as a kid when it came out originally. I was thinking of doing a replay on the Switch tho... Have you?
Does it have similar combat?
@@diogenes3300 uuh nope, but it's still a turn based RPG but with 45+ Characters you can use.
@@gnosis_gaming yup, finished it years ago, planning to play it again now that I could understand it alot better now. 😁
It's a good time to revisit it!@@kinichi20
Does the sequel legai 2 better than the original? I always see that the sequel is trash that's why I have not try it.
I had Legaia 2 but never got into it :(
