  • A look at a common problem that shouldn't be a problem at all. I see a lot of chainsaws come through with melted plastic and this Poulan PP4218 is just another example. #smallenginerepair

    Just picked up 3 Poulans for $30. One of them has the melted plastic just like this one. These are fun to experiment with and mod as they have very little resale value where I live. I'll pay $10 each for them if I have to but I prefer to dig them out of garbage piles. It kinda blows my mind that people will sometimes pay the price of a new Walmart saw to have their Walmart saw fixed. It disrupts the natural cycle of people abusing and neglecting cheap equipment till it quits and then gently placing it on the curb for people like me to pick up. The curbside supply has been kinda low lately and I'm out here paying money out of my own pocket to rescue saws that have surely been physically and verbally abused. I don't know what this world is coming to.

      When the repair costs could exceed half the replacement value I'll talk to the customer about maybe buying something new with a warranty. Quite a few repair them anyway.

    Hey bud, i have the same saw and ran 56 chord through it and still runs like a champ. Some say they are garbage but i had good experience with it. But i like my stihl ms271 most. Cheers

      The problem is that most of these saws aren't sold to people like you that know how to operate and maintain them. Thanks for watching.

    Hey, Scott!
    You haven’t heard from me lately because I’m on Day 14 of Covid. Doing okay, just really weak and so ready for this to be over!
    I just finished working on a freebie Stihl MS180C with similar issues. Brake band was ok but the clutch springs had stretched, plus the same deal with melted plastic. I’m lucky enough to have a Foredom tool so the metal grinding bits made short work of removing the meltage. Back together again and the saw is like new. 👍

      I got a saw used and replaced the fuel lines and carb to get it running. Sounded absolutely awful, blown up almost. Removed the drum and clutch and it ran fine.The springs in my clutch were weak causing the drum to get hot and melted the surrounding area on mine I believe. Check to ensure the oil pump is working, it’s located under the clutch. Mine was not working.

    Hi, thanks for the vid. In the process
    of cleaning chainsaw and open up the chain break and this unidentified round pin/spring went flying across the room. And no matter how many videos I watch I can’t find this same piece. Your video is closest and hoping you maybe able to help. It about 2 cms wide round metal like a key ring with 2 prongs out the same side. one short one long. And the short one is bent at end like it’s suppose to attach to something. Have picture but wouldn’t work out how to post.
    Any chance you know what this might be and where it belongs? 😳🤞

    How do you get the chain bar to lock down? So the chain doesn't come loose after a few seconds. Abuse, it's constantly popping off and I don't know why.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  Před 6 měsíci

      I'll assume you have the original bar and chain. If not you need to confirm the bar, chain and drive sprocket are matched. next you want to be sure the saw is feeding oil to the bar. Run the saw without a bar and see if its feeding oil, then inspect the hole in the bar that is supposed to receive the oil and make sure its not blocked. When installing the bar the tensioner pin in the cover must align with a hole in the bar. Put it all together and roll the chain while tightening the tensioner screw. This will get any kinks out of the chain. Tighten till the chain lighlu snaps back when pulled on. Now if the chain has popped off a few times, it may be damaged. Check that it will sit in the bar groove.

    Question, if fuel line shrinks allowing air into fuel tank, would that cause bad running?

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  Před rokem +1

      No. If you're asking if the tank needs to pressurized, the answer is no.
