i feel this, i think the last time i tried these big challenges to draw everyday i ended up burnet out and not drawing for 2 years... but i don't regret this experience because it let me know the type of person and artist i am. i'm the type that get inspired when i am washing dishes, or studying for my midterm, and during those times i cant just drop everything and draw but i do sketch my ideas down, then come back to it when i have more time. So my advice is to clam down, slow down and get inspired. Sometime the monotony of life breeds the most beautiful ideas

I'm an artist myself and i don't do inktober either, for similar reasons : i think that many artists put too much pressure on themselves to complete inktober, and finally end up very tired by it. And i don't like to create to obey to a challenge, because i prefer to follow my own intuitivity/inspiration. So i don't want inktober to take me too much time and energy. Challenges could be great, but i'm not always sure we should make them because "everybody does".
So i join totally with your point, and its something i say myself too : that we are all different and have a different rythm or inspiration. So it serves to nothing to make like others, but to respect your own schedule and inspirations.
I do think that many artists today follow too much the tendencies of the artistic community, instead to follow their inner voices. There's a lot of artists saying that "we MUST draw everyday", for example, and that make believe that you HAVE to draw everyday.
I remember that on a video titled that "we MUST draw everyday", a woman artist posted a comment, saying that she tried to draw everyday, because the artistic community keep saying that. But she was tired mentally by it, and didn't always had the courage to force herself. And the owner of the video answered her "But you HAVE to draw everyday, even if you make a quickly tiny thing". But i wasn't ok with that.
Because for me, to force yourself is contrary to the intuitive flow and only waste time, passion and paper to force ourself to make a tiny drawing that would obviously not be good. Because when you force yourself, you don't do a great job.
SO i was shocked to see how artistic community remove their inner voices of people, by imposing some rules and trying to convert others to it. While in artistic community, we have this CHANCE to express what we really are, so to exactly NOT following the rules.
So that's why i understand completely that you DON'T do inktober. You have the right and you follow your inner voice. To be free to draw what YOU WANT, and not be conditioned to draw something according to the influence of something's else than you.
Mosty that inktober last one month, which is long, when you have to conform yourself to something that may finally not fit to your real artistic inspiration.
Of course, it's great if some artists are inspired by it, but i saw some artists ending up by making bad art, just to complete the challenge. But finally it's serves to nothing if it's to make bad drawings, because for me, art is to make something that really fit to what you are.
Me, i don't do inktober and that allow me the freedom to be creative in my own way, and to make great drawings that correspond to my moods, instead to waste my time on a challenge where i wouldnt make my real aspirations.
Thanks a lot for this video, and for exposing your view about inktober, because not a lot of artists are aware to this reality. Even if i think that a little more artists discover the downside of inktober or challenges, with the years.
And nice drawing, it's interesting to see the poster color. I was already interested by it and still don't know if i would buy. Because i love the gouache effect (gouache is my fav medium), but seems look mostly like gouache-ink for me, so maybe a little too much liquid. But maybe i would try :)

So, SO true!! Challenges may work well for some artists and be incredibly detrimental to others. It's more important to find a process that works for YOU. 💛
I totally agree, the advice that "you must draw every day" isn't true for everyone. I don't think it's any different than physical exercise. You're not going to lift weights in the gym EVERY DAY or run a 10k EVERY DAY. You need to give your body time to rest and recover.
Creativity is all about thinking outside the box, but even in the creative community, many people try to fit people back into a box. A "one-size fits all" box, instead of letting each person create in a way that is intuitive to them.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me! I'm so glad that you've found an artistic process that works well for you. :)
I'm definitely having a lot of fun with poster colors! It's technically still in the gouache family (which is why I love it, because gouache is my favorite medium too!), but I definitely used a lot more thinner layers with it in this painting. Straight from the jar, it's actually quite thick! 💛

Would love a supply tour - always love those. Especially would love to hear about the differences you've found between poster color and traditional gouache. I've had my eye on a set of poster colors, too. Might be my Christmas present to myself! Excited to see the rest of your illustrations for the year!

Lovely video! I adore inktober, but this year I definitely got severely burnt out 😩 but I’m proud of myself for finishing it! It’s been really nice taking a break from art and doing other things I love like reading again and binging downtown abbey 😂
I love all the little details you add in your paintings! I’m always zooming in to look at them. ❤
I’d love to see some videos on how to begin doing studies of artists work and photographs effectively, and maybe more Meraki Meadow lore! I also think it would be cool if you did a limited color palette challenge! I did the three marker challenge several years back and it’s so fun!

Ahhh thank you so much Lauren!! I’m so sorry you’ve been burnt out from inktober, but I’m glad you’ve found some other fun things to do besides art. 💛
Oooo a studies video would be SO FUN!! I’ll definitely add it to the list. I used to do 3 marker challenges back in the day, but I think it’d be super fun to do it with gouache!!

I would love some technique videos which would be a great follow-on to your wonderful lighting video. For instance, you have a distinctive color palette. What are your favorite colors and mixes? Your paintings have such a wonderful glow! Also, layering techniques would be awesome. You do a lot of glazing with gouache including thin over thicker layers when you are adjusting the lighting in a scene. Love your videos and your cozy style!

The creative journey is such an incredible one. Art challenges of all sorts are great ways to explore and figure out what type of artists we are. Trying a thirty day challenge is something to definitely try once. I'm more of a every three day challenge person since I tried several of them. I have a lot of other obligations, not to mention a dayjob that drains my soul, so I only have enough spoons every other day or so. 🤷

So fun and cute! This is a Halloween party I’d want to be invited to 😂. I would love to see more of what you’re already doing - the videos are fabulous! But also think it would be amazing if there were some tutorials, or real-time, follow along with me kind of videos. Would love to hear more on your process of going from initial idea, to a finished sketch. That’s where I struggle the most - going from a hazy idea in my head, to something tangible that I can work with.

Would love to receive some advice on how to start. I am at a point in my life where I really want to do art vut I feel so behind everyone else. I have a full time job and I try my best to create after work. I just really struggle with social media and knowing where to begin. I still have so much to learn and it feels like I will never have enough time to learn everything.

Hi, do you like the poster colors more than you Winsor & Newton gouache?

    • @allisonaletha
      @allisonaletha  Před 9 měsíci +1

I love them both equally!! Because you get so much for your money with the nicker poster colors, I’m less afraid of “wasting them”, so I can paint with thicker layers (which I love doing!) But the quality of Winsor and Newton gouache is INCREDIBLE, and the colors are so easy to mix together. They definitely both have a place on my palette. 💛

    • @allisonaletha

Great question! Whenever I try to get the tags off, it leaves a very sticky residue that I can never seem to get off. I’ve tried using rubbing alcohol, acetone, etc. and they’re still sticky. 😅 So instead I leave the tags on now!

That's a great question!! I think I started sketching Bits and Bobbles in 2020, but the rest of the Meraki Meadow characters and story started coming to life earlier this year. 💛
