I was pretty bummed we couldn’t get the battery swap to work. Although I’m not convinced on the idea, I think it would be fun to try it! I hope we can film the process soon - will try before heading back to the US!

Battery swap stations also help regulate the electric grid in china. 2023 stations will double battery capacity. And of course you never get battery degradation and save tens of thousands off the upfront purchase price. Opportunity cost no Brainer to rent the battery. The roof sensors are on the outside on purpose so you can show off your tech. Gary Larson school for the gifted with the pass thru opening, 😆 🤣
As a NIO stockholder, I would love to think this company can survive but just like with Tesla years ago, the prediction of their demise is everywhere these days.
I don't know if the battery swap idea is good or bad, I just like that someone is pursuing it. I'm kind of a fanboy of tesla, but the structural battery means they can no longer do it....could be a bad miss by musk...
Battery swap is not an idea that live for long. Faster charging tech is the way to go, and we'll get there.
The anti China comments is such a shame. Many of the products you use daily has been made in China. NIO has quality products and a quality brand.

Im a BMW 7 series owner and I tested the ET7 couple weeks back. Im very impressed of the ET7, I love the brand and I love swapping.

I'm old enough to remember when people said they would never buy Japanese cars. We called them Jap Crap, or Rice Burners. Now we love them! People accept change, albeit reluctantly at first. The same will happen with Chinese cars. The cars are top quality and have cutting edge tech. It's a no brainer.

WRONG, other Asian brands used different strategy by selling cheap cars in Europe. NOT A SINGLE ASIAN CAR BRAND sells any Luxury cars in Europe. And NIO wants to be seen as a Luxury brand, as they are also very expensive to buy. BYD is doing the correct strategy by selling cheap EV's, only then Europeans will give an Asian brand a chance just like in the history. Every rich person i know buys a German branded EV. Audi, BMW and Mercedes EV's are bought by the rich here. They will never ever buy NIO because it damages their image of themselves. The car brand is super important to them and their image to the outside world.

I hope Nio comes to Canada. I could care less who owns the company or where it's made as long as it's good quality and the company is going to stick around. If a car brand does well in a country with a billion people, I think it'll do fine in the rest of the world.

I own an ES8 in China. I really love the battery swapping experience. I am also a NIO stock holder. Not a lot of people are aware that, another good thing about battery swapping stations is they also provide super high voltage charging without too much support from the power infrastructure because it has the electricity capacity stored in all those batteries. It could provide supercharging for EVs of other brands.

Being able to swap the battery is a good idea. Even if you never use it and just charge the battery like other EV owners, you know you can easily get a new battery if your battery dies. Another youtuber who recently replaced their Model 3 battery paid 13k for a replacement. $2-3k of that cost was just for the labor. I'm sure Nio would be willing you sell you the battery and replacement would just take minutes. So with a repair/maintenance stand point, it's pretty awesome.
If and when there are enough swap stations. I guess about 1500 in Europe should be enough.

Are you allowing for there being only 4 packs of each size per station? (75, 100, 150)
Then, unless you want very unhappy 150kWh drivers, you'll need at least 2-3 spare per station to back up on busy days (plus delivery logistics)
So "1500 stations" becomes 1500x 13 plus 1500x 3 extra.
That's 24,000 packs just to "tick over" for that number of stations.
Add wear and tear, plus packs "in transit" for general replacement.
You're "optimistic"
That cost can go up to $26K on other models. Plus, you will not have battery degradation problem, and you can upgrade your battery with new technology. No need to change the whole car to have the newest battery technology considering how fast the technology changes.
@@hakank1475 Plus I'm sure that instead of shredding old battery packs, they could just repurpose them for load balancing in the grid. They're not much value in a car when they get down to 60% capacity, but slotted into a stationary of a battery bank, they would still have a lot of useful life left.

Its like complaining that you cant fund an Audi E-tron, Porsche or what ever else premium brand thats is a premium car maker. But no one else has battery swap like Nio. This will not only keep the second hand value better than any other car with an built in battery, but it will supply the user with a free choice of battery types and capacity. It's such a genius build It's almost unbelivable. I'm so impressed that i even bought some stockmarket shares in the company. They might end up sky rocketing like Tesla.

Yes if you live near a battery swap station - say 50km max. - and can not charge the car at home - then it could be a interesting use case for you.
But for me, living 1200km away from the next battery swap station not so much.
The multiple microphones spread out is for Location sensing. That was the digital assistant Nomi can figure out which passenger is asking for commands. I guess if you say "open the window" in the rear left passenger seat it'll open the nearest window automatically.
Battery swap means NIO can provide the Battery as a Service
This allows buyers to rent the battery, and pay a lot less upfront for the vehicle, it also means no battery degradation problem, as well as maintaining good resale value
Battery swap is seriously being pushed in China, where not everyone can have a dedicated parking spot and charger, especially when EV ownership rate increases
The fact that CATL is moving into modular battery swap technology, means it's a serious direction to go
Renault actually wanted to do so 10 years ago and also build a few swap stations. They canceled it but still provided rented batteries for the benefits you mentioned (full warranty, cheaper car). They also stopped doing that later as it just didn’t work out. The idea is great but there are to many cons:
Battery swap requires extremely expensive swapping stations. With charging times decreasing fast (around 15 minutes for Hyundais 800V system) the battery swap won’t be interesting anymore. Plus your perfectly well battery may get exchanged for a worse one. Plus the battery rental is very expensive. We are talking about minimal 180-280€ per month.
I have tried it here in Denmark Copenhagen. And it is amazing. 😍👍🏾
The Chinese has measured 0-100 to 3.5s which is just as fast as my/your model3 perf. You cant say its slow even though its no plaid 😅 its half the price of a plaid after all. It turns out Nio measures acc times with three adults and baggage in the car. Ive ordered a white it will arrive in three weeks time. Cant wait 🥳😁
Yes, other reviews rave about the acceleration. Tesla uses rolling start and only driver/no luggage for their 0-100 times. Nio uses full car. ET7 is om par with Ludicrous mode.
The Plaid has much worse brakes and brake feel. My Model S (Ludicrous) felt a little more heavy in the turns than the ET7. But the biggest difference is the quality, fit and finish, noise isolation, lighting, seats, soundsystem. I have sold my Model S.
Model S is also a great car, but ET7 does look more attractive
NIO is a BEAST they have my full support, especially after the last earnings for Q3 and what CEO William LI has planned for Q4 deliveries and future vision I am all in. I love how unique the cars are, when you see these vehicles you know 'it's a NIO!'. As battery tech improves, the weight of the battery will reduce & capacity will increase and more batteries will be able to fit into a Swap Station, Tesla and other EV's will be stuck with the same old battery. $NIO

Battery swap can work wonders against the naysayers that bring up battery worries with owning an ev, charging and lifetime wise
CORRECTION: NIO's software is not done in California. Their software is developed in China, as this is legally required, and the software talent pool there is far greater than what is available outside China, especially in self-driving software. However, software localization is and will be done in their respective markets, depending on legal requirements. NIO's California office, until a few months ago, engages only in market research in preparation for their North American debut. Lately, that office has been expanded as the company is definitely coming to America.

I am not sure this is true since the San Jose location has been open since the inception of NIO and was the highest cost of R&D and almost lead the company to bankruptcy. This means that the California office was open before the launch of their first car. They had to lay staff off in the California offices in 2019

What almost bankrupted NIO was the pandemic, but NIO was fortunate to have secured financial backing from the municipal government of Heifei, which now is one of the largest shareholders.

I doubt it... Electric cars are just another option right now. Battery chemistry and battery technology are still years away when these battery can withstand the rapid heat from DC charging without degrading the battery. Public demand is that a battery needs to charge from 0% to 90% in 10 minutes or less. Also, a battery needs to maintain its integrity for at least 10 years otherwise there are gonna be millions of dead electric cars in junk yards...
Seriously, what is to become of a 2014 Model S 100P in a few years? Will there be a new modern battery for this car or is the car just dead. Also, will modern software work for the car?

@@mamadouaziza2536 Alot of owners who have first build Model S from 2014 only had small battery degradation. Byd blade battery and CATL batteries are rated for almost 1 Million miles or so. China is gonna eat Japan's lunch in cars sales and tech within a few years.

Any battery degradation is too much in my opinion.. My point is what happens to these cars in the used market with second and third hand buyers? Buying these used cars at $35k to $40k and having to spend an additional $10k to $15k for a battery that is probably used too... Get all set up and come to find out that the hardware in the car can no longer accept updates..

We know an electric car will not last 40+ years. To me, an electric car is a throw-away because current tech will never be enough for consumers, they always will want more.. A 2019 electric car is considered dated now.. If the public can be assured of fair price battery upgrades either from the car brand or from a 3rd party, I think people will be more secure in buying an electric car.

Great review. NIO doesn’t believe that battery swap will replace conventional charging. Both will co exits into the future. They also has the 800v charging system coming. Regarding the charging speed, I think how fast your car can charge as promised by the charging station depends a lot on how many cars are charging at the station because of the shared input power. It seems lots of cars charging at the station.
Charging stations will soon be sucking money out of every drivers very much like oil companies today., and state tax will follow the same path.
Ionity doesn't share power between chargers. 360kw available on each station.
You use charging a bit too often IMHO. I guess you want to tell us something different. Maybe that fast charging is more important than swap stations? For me the next swap station is more than 1200km away. For me fast charging and owning the battery is more important.

In the meantime, it’s placed where it likely benefits long distance travelers and where people don’t easily get access to a charger like high rise buildings.

I look forward to seeing the battery swap test. I think having battery swapping as an alternative to DC fast charging is a good idea. I have a garage. So I often need to remember many people do not have a garage at home. This way they can buy a standard-range model, swap out a long range for a road trip as needed and go back to a more economical battery during their normal weekly driving routine. Including a 5-10 minute battery swap option is a fantastic idea, especially for those who do not have a way to charge overnight and do not want to babysit their car for a 30-40 DC charge all the time.
I also thought Nomi is pretty cool. Yeah it is a bit of a gimmick, but it does personalize the car. I'd rather have the option to have a 'cute' interface and to be able to turn it off (no eyes/turning head) than a sterile screen only like we have on US cars. I'd probably keep mine on.
The styling is pretty cool. Not as handsome as a Lucid Air but it also doesn't look like a bar of soap like a Tesla. The interface is awesome. I love all the options for customization.

You can indeed reset the whole system by push and hold the right silver button together with the far left button (horizontal line) on the steering wheel for a few seconds and release them when the reset menu shows up and the screens turn black.
Push the brake pedal and it starts up again.

With the caveat that Hyundai is killing it in the styling department, as a premium EV alternative to the Germans, I”m actually much more confident in the Chinese brands producing a high quality competitive product over Korean or even Japanese brands. Thing is, you truly do get what you pay for with China: all of our highest end electronics are produced either by the Chinese or with their collaboration, then there's the everyday tools and gadgets we all rely on, and yet they also make dollar stores possible. The Japanese meanwhile have been conspicuous only in their absence.
We must realize that if China can build the fastest super computers, top notch high speed trains, construct the most complicated bridges, put man in space, sent a rover to Mars, brought lunar soil back to earth and in a few years, maybe the only country in the world that has a space station, must be able to produce better quality consumer products? The answer is definitely, YES they can.
But you wonder why you don’t see better quality products at stores like Walmarts, Targets and Canadian Tire Stores etc?
The answer is very simple: China, the factory of the world, will submit various quotations according to its customers’ specs; the purchasers (your super store owners) would make the final decision based on their own objectives, usually their choices are the ones that give them the maximized profits.
As for the consumers, don’t blame China for not able to produce high end products, because they certainly can. If you really have to blame someone, blame your corporate billionaires that know too well what their customers (you) want. In most cases, for the cheap prices you paid, you are getting pretty reasonable quality.

Maybe I will keep P7 for some time yet, I dont know, but the Nio arriving late february, will definitely be a keeper, I think it wil be awesome. Thank you for a great review! NIO is the way to go… swap & drive is better than charged & wait! They have amazing cars. The best part is the fact that you can swapped for a fully charged battery under 5 minutes! Also you can upgrade your battery based on your driving long distance vs local. This system offer you a stress free battery defect because you can swap it right away!
When they have built 1500 swap stations in Europe - maybe. Until then i have to visit fast chargers from time to time.

Meaning if you're a "big battery" owner you will turn up on a busy day and find the 4 large packs have been "rented" by the smaller battery users on a road trip.
I agree. One of the reason why I haven't bought an EV is because I don't want to get stuck with a car with a dying battery. My experience with most batteries is degeneration, they don't hold a charge as long over time. And I heard how expensive it is to buy a new one. NIO's battery swap service would be a game changer for me. I don't have to worry about charging nor my battery dying. You basically get a good battery every time you swap that is fantastic.

One question for the master of Oracles: How long will the new 777X be grounded? I want to place a million bet on the exact date.

This ET7 can tow 2000kg. That is more than most small suvs and crossovers. Not being able to tow with model S is so annoying. Luckily the plaid will include a towing rating.
It's a US vs EU thing. In Europe, almost all cars have tow ratings, very often as much as 2 times higher than in America, which means even a compact car will usually be enough to tow an RV or a small boat. But there's a continent-wide speed limit of 55 MPH for all vehicles with trailers, from a Corolla towing a one axle U-Haul box, to a 30 ton 18-wheeler.
@@wojciechmuras553 The time where a fully specced VW golf diesel had 80hp is over. Most C segment cars (and up) have more than enough power to reach 120 or 130 km/h with a trailer. You sadly see it pretty regularly over here.
But can confirm: Europeans love their caravans. Especially during summer break they're everywhere.
@@b127_1 Of course there's enough power for that. But power is barely relevant to towing capabilities. I bet a 60 hp Skoda Fabia could take a caravan up to 75 MPH, no issues. The reason for tow ratings is exclusively about safety.
At 55 MPH, a Golf will be able to stop a properly loaded trailer in 40-50 meters. From 75 MPH, it's gonna take its tiny brakes at least 70-80 meters. (But an F150, with its massive brakes, can safely stop in 40-50 meters from 75 MPH while towing a similar load)
At 55, crosswind might make it scary, but a 1000 kg Golf with a 750 kg trailer will easily stay stable in its lane. At 75, it'll be in the ditch after the slightest breeze. (But a massive and heavy F150 can stay stable at 75 no problem, given the same trailer)
If you want to tow big things fast, you need a heavy and stable pulling vehicle. So it's a trade-off. Either let people go fast, but ban small cars from pulling trailers, like the US, or limit the speeds so that small cars can tow safely, like the EU.
Can't cheat the weight ratio between the car and the trailer.
@@wojciechmuras553 They raised the speed limit to 62mph/100km/h in Finland last year for 750kg unbraked trailers (or 820kg since they know allow the tong weigh to be calculated separate). Braked trailers are still stuck at 80km/h. But anyway, it's a dream to be able to flow with traffic legally :)
But I will never get the truck appeal. The bed is most of the time to small to do anything useful with so you still need the trailer all the time On top of that there is so little weight over the rear of a unloaded truck it's useless in any snow. Much rather have a normal car then :)

They always buy Mercedes, BMW, Audi. It's just normal to have those brand as someone who has a good income. I have a normal income i just bought the Model 3 RWD because i could afford it. But all top managers at my Company and rich people who buy Electric cars all drive big Audi SUV EV's, BMW or Mercedes EQE's etc. Even more so than buying the Model S. NOMI gadgets are not yet available but NIO is working on a cellphone and smartwatch. They are building an entire eco system. 13 swap stations are currently in virtual power plant test mode. There are over 1200 swap stations world wide. They built a plant in Hungary for NIO power products (swap and charging piles)
Great video! I think the car with the battery swap at least solves your battery aging problem for the long term. This means your battery will no longer be a problem for you. Just get another battery from the station, if you think the existing one has a problem. So, why not? Instead, other brands need to change the battery after 10 or 15 years, and that will cost you a fortune.

Kyle. One doesnt have to buy the battery at all. You can rent the battery from the getgo and switch as you like. Pay more for bigger and pay less for smaller batterie.

There was a time when people didn't think Japanese cars would do well here in the land of V8 yank tanks, but Japanese cars proved to be efficient, economical, and reliable and really took off here so much that American car manufacturers couldn't keep so they were rebadging a lot of Japanese cars as American cars. I think could be approaching that era again but with Chinese cars. Look at Europe, MG's are now Chinese built and designed, they are rebadges of Chinese cars, Volvos are Chinese built, and they straight up have Chinese cars like NIO. At the very least, some rebadging could happen in the US. Japan is falling behind, I don't know if Toyota is making up their mind. Yes Nissan has the leaf, yes its somewhat popular, but Leaf was around a little bit before Tesla, there should be a whole line of Leafy cars, SUVS, and pickups by now, but Japan is being slow now, maybe too slow. PSA Chrysler seems to be pulling a Toyota right now, they may be the first to rely the most on Chinese rebadging. Maybe the ET7 will be a big Chrysler in the US.
The big issue with Chrysler is the name itself. Modern Chrysler is known for shit quality parts and quality control. Chrysler is one of the worst reliable brands on the market. Chrysler of old was fantastic but that era is long gone. Chrysler has a long way to prove themselves being actually reliable in the EV world if they are to win over the masses. A lot of people who understand cars avoid Chrysler with a 10 foot pole currently.
Difference between all other successful Asian brands is, they started out with selling cheap cars to get sales. NIO had a bad strategy to sell luxury overpriced EV's. Rich people have options, and buy their favorite brands and always love German brands. 1. The Japanese failed to sell their Luxury models in Europe, 2. the Koreans also failed to sell their luxury models in Europe. We Europeans love our German Luxury brands. We only buy Asian if they are cheap, if we get to the point we have enough money we buy Germany Luxury, Mercedes, BMW, Audi. It's that simple...

Those are Lidar sensors for NAD (Nio autonomus driving) will be available in 2023 for some limited routes in China but NIO already has vehicles mapping in Europe for NAD, so it will be avialable in Europe in near future.
We‘ll see who comes to the market first. I say it will be MercedesVWBMW. All others will not get permission. Including Tesla.

You might have been able to solve the autonomous driving glitch by shutting car down and walking about for 5 mn until it goes into deep sleep and go back to the car (acts as reset), next time also get the car properly set-up account wise so you can swap!

Do not import cars from China, if you want to buy one you should buy it in Norway. Because of the Chinese network, many of the connected features of the Chinese version of the car are not available abroad. This is a smart electric car and the experience will be very bad if you can't get connected.

You would understand the "driver training" if you ever applied for a driving license in China, which requires mandatory driving lessons and a passing scope in a pre-test of law and technique BEFORE the final examination and road test. By the way, the final examination is 100 randomly selected questions, you must score a minimum of 90% and get two chances to achieve that before the road test. I think in future with autonomous driving systems, governments should require system training to unlock such features because the approach is not standardized and like pilot aircraft certification, understanding the system matters.
An even bigger stressor for me beyond range anxiety is charging door not opening anxiety. I can think of anything more frustrating and it seem that a lot of EVs have problems with their charging doors. Why do they need to be electrical or automatic?
