Spring Shop Work

  • The weather is still not favorable but we're starting to get ready for spring planting anyway. The machines need to be prepped so we spent the day working on trucks and tractors. One of the Kenworths got a new tarp motor, the 8360rt got a new set of batteries, and I spent some time cleaning shop.
    I am a 5th generation family farmer from West-Central Minnesota. The recent interest in food, combined with a large amount of 'misinformation' has driven me to start this channel. I hope to be someone people can relate to and trust when they question how their food is grown and raised. I also hope to become a 'smarter' farmer through my experiences with this channel. I strongly believe we must have an open mind and a willingness to learn about others, or we cannot move forward as one. My goal is to build the connection between farmers and consumers by facilitating a collaborative conversation amongst everyone. I do this by sharing my day-to-day farming experiences, my opinions on certain topics, and occasionally visiting other farms and businesses to help better understand other farming and business practices. There is no limit to where this channel may go, so please join me!!

    Great video's and great content. Your one video you asked for people to post where they're from. Well I am in Buffalo N.Y.. Grew up on a small farm about in a town called Belfast N.Y. about two hours south of Buffalo. Lol depending on how bad the winters get here. We get the cold from Canada and the moisture to feed that cold air from Lake Erie. I am a full time mechanic,truck driver and heavy tow truck driver. We don't farm anymore but we still use our barn for the horse's and the other half as a shop. My relatives still out in Belfast. I am up in the city because I was offered a civil service job. In fact I almost went to college for General agriculture at Alfred state college here in upstate New York. Thank you again for your video's.

    Thanks for sharing Zach. Lot of people do not realize there is a lot of prep work involved in getting ready for spring planting and spring in general. It amazes me how deep the frost line gets up there. I'M in landscaping and we can plant all winter here most winters at most our frost line is only 2 to 3 inches deep. LOL Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!

    If you don't want your diesel fuel to jell up, put sea foam in it. Sea foam is used to clean out the carburetor and other parts that form build ups. On top of that it prevents diesel fuel from gelling up because it mixes with the fuel which causes it to have a much lower freezing point. Every time I hear it's going to be below freezing In Sw Ohio, I go out and put about 16oz in my diesel tank. Works like a charm.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      Jonathan Gretz we use an additive in the trucks in the winter, but it's too expensive to put in the 2,000 gallon barrel... we end up running in below zero weather sometimes so I'm not sure seafoam would cover it.

    I have a suggest to help start your truck engine's in the cold. Try the gear reduction starters from Delco Remy. 39 Mt with the larger bolt holes for like a cummins ism, n14 , 60 series. Just count the teeth on the bendix gear to match up. They're lighter and easier to install. I put one on a cummins ism in a freightliner. Cranks that engine in the cold pretty quick.. Also for the starter bolts I use plumbers dope the white paste. Same stuff used for air fittings. I apply it to the threads and it threads in very well and when it hardens it will hold the bolts in place so they don't back out. Also easier getting them out at time of starter replacement compared to lock tite.

So it leaks when it rains, creeks in the wind, and is shaped like a mutant capital T, has 4 different concrete floors, and something like 5 breaker box's haha. We love it as it is our own creation but to have one nice large square building like yours would be wonderful. I'm sure you guys do plenty in there! I was taught electricity is just smoke. the starter takes lots of smoke so the "hoses" to the starter are necessarily BIG. if you let the smoke out, it quits working. it looked like the snow line was pretty well defined. depending on where you are you could get dumped on or just rain and ice. what does it cost to update the firmware in those monitors and do you pay for GPS data?? do you have a GPS repeater in the field also? I was just over on jay leno's channel watching him drive a red $600k quad track on the streets of Hollywood. he and Tim Allen really have it tough, eh. stay frosty up there.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety +2

      First Name we don't pay for the GPS "data" but we have to pay a one time fee for the accuracy level. Our most accurate system was an expensive subscription, and the least accurate one is actually free, but the monitors and receivers are spendy. We sent have our own receiver in the fields because we're able to use the one on the large bin in town 3 miles from us.

      MN Millennial Farmer I thought the same . We just have the roll up type but electric would be nice . They said it would be like 2 grand for the kit 500 for install and like almost 400 for a new tarp . I might have to check online I'm sure the install can't be that hard . Who knows but hitting a button while your In the truck would be nice

    Questions: What is the latest date you can plant corn and beans? Is there a minimum temperature the soil has to be at for promoting germination? How long will it take the frost to come out of the ground when the weather warms up?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety +1

      Glenn Orth those are all variable questions but May 1st is a perfect date for us to plant. When June hits, that's getting REALLY late for us. At that point, we would have to swap our seed for earlier maturities and we would be giving up a huge amount of yield. Rains help take the frost out so I'm hoping that's what we end up with.

    Great videos. Just found this channel. I’m in the process of buying 6 sections of virgin land (never been farmed) and farming on it. I have done a series of soil tests, etc.
    How many acres does your family farm? What do you grow? Amazing that you’re 5th generation farmer. Congrats man! :)
    I have a few questions about equipment if you have the time.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      David Lamb holy cow, 6 sections of virgin land?!?! That's amazing, where at?! I'm jealous of that! We farm 2,500 acrea and right now it's all corn and soybeans.

      MN Millennial Farmer My property is located SE of Silver City, New Mexico about 30 miles, next to the Mimbres River.
      I see in your videos that you guys have a lot of tractors and implements, etc. What is your favorite all-round tractor from tillage to seeding?
      Also, for my existing natural vegetation I have blue and black grama grass, a few 1-2 foot high forbs, and the largest shrubbery is the creosote bush. My plan is to use a bulldozer with a mulcher attached and/or with a root rake to rid all this stuff. Then come right behind with a Horsch Focus 6TD seeder. I’m doing circular sprinkler systems plus flooding the corners with the wells and pumps, including a reservoir in the middle of the section to pump out to all four 1/4 sections.
      Sorry, I’m getting too long winded here.
      My main two questions are of the go-to tractor and then how to best get rid of the existing vegetation to be able to cultivate.
      Thanks very much for any help and input. Kind regards!

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety +1

      David Lamb wow, that's awesome! I haven't broken much virgin ground, only a few acres, and it was a lot of work because of the small trees and big rocks! As far as a tractor goes, each of our tractors are pretty specific for the jobs they do, so we need them all. We don't really have a "do-all" tractor. I guess you would have to figure out your horsepower needs and go from there...

    Nice job man! Things are late because of the climate or the scheadule are on time ?
    I'm curious, in USA (i'm from brazil) is easy to get some land for rent? To plant soybeans, corn...
    Have a good season man! God bless you all in US>

      Hugo Miranda we're late than normal because of our weather, but I am far north so that makes me even later. In my area, finding land to rent is very very difficult.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

    • @TwoHappyChildrenFarm
      @TwoHappyChildrenFarm Před 6 lety

      Good to know. We need goals. Here I want to break 180 and $4.50 would be a nice change of pace. If you're closing in on 300, it would be nice to see what the fields look like. I think people think it's easy, just plug in the formula and boom, out pops 300. We know it's the details and work. Good job.

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      TwoHappyChildrenFarm realistically, 200 is awesome for our area. We hope for that but 170-180 is more common. Our local prices are under $3.50 yet so $4.50 might be tough! Its always challenging.
