Broken Belt-Harvesting Soy Beans

- Harvest 2018 rolls on...for the most part. Today we had a belt break on our John Deere 9870. The soybeans are wetter than we would like.

its been awesome to follow this years harvest and have daily videos, im sure its a bit of a hassle for you guys in a way but your viewers have been loving it i know i have.
When I was a kid I lived on a huge wheat farm in northern Oklahoma.I miss seeing the harvest and tractors working the fields. I go to sleep watching you work on the farm. Makes me sleep like a baby.
We combined about 40 acres of beans today. They were around 15%. The ground was actually pretty good. We were evan able to load the trucks in the field. I hope you guys are able to find some dry beans. Weather sounds nice though. They're saying mid 60's on Thursday. Thanks for the video

To get that cob out of the sample, open the bottom sieve completely open (straight up) and adjust the top sieve until the sample is clean (with whatever fan speed is necessary). That allows the air to get up through the sieves and cleans the sample. I know your corn is higher moisture than you would like and it may not be an option to slow the rotor and/or open the concaves, but that will keep from breaking the cob up into small pieces.

This year we ran our bottom sieve wide open, and shut our top sieve to about 3/8's or so. it worked great in corn! Also adjusting the rotor speed and concave is important (to not shred up cobs)
I am learning so much about farming. I wish I was a school teacher and show these in class.

with my little John Deere 3300 85hp diesel I just don't have the hp to bring in high moisture beans. this leaves me with no choice but to wait for 13% or below. wet flexible bean stalks just won't go through the concave. and then there is the mill dockage for high moisture beans making me wish I'd waited. huge difference in our farming considerations due to our extremely different climates. Minnesota and North Carolina are like two different worlds this time of the year. thanks for taking us along on your harvest.
I'm in the grain business and we really appreciate guys who DON"T bring in wet beans. Look at the forecast, they'll dry out. If you farm so damn much ground you have to grind out wet ones, maybe you have too much.

Nothing I love more than farming all day, then coming home and watching some other guy farm all day.
I remember when all fields looked like that when everyone farmed on the shares. Haul the customers to the elevator in town haul ours to the scales and then grain bins. So you would see fields all over will 12 rows standing 12 rows shelled. At that time most grain heads were 6 row. Great content as always 👍

I auctually work in a john deere combine shop here in idaho and while i was watching your video i was auctually right in the middle of changing a cleaning fan belt ,and clean grain auger belt.
Tyler Hughes where in Idaho? I’m in Teton valley.
Why are those belts breaking ? What do they drive ? Is there a slip clutch ? Is there a shaft speed sensor to tell the operator that something is amiss ?

@@SomeTechGuy666 cleaning fan belt drives between variable drives that increase and decrease the speed of the cleaning fan which basically just blows air through the chaffer and seive elements to remove the seed from the stalk. The clean grain auger belt drives the elevator that tajes the seperated "clean" grain seeds up into the grain tank. Somethimes the belts just wear out and breaks. sometimes something plugs up or doesn't adjust corectly and slips and the belt smokes antil it hust breaks. There are a few things in the cab controll that will tell you if something isnt right.
Never once broke a cleaning fan belt on a AF or TR. No excuse for it on a JD.

We finally got going today after 4 weeks of rain and snow. the wheat was testing 18% at 11 am when we started and was at 16% in the early evening the weather looks great for southern Saskatchewan for the next week or so! Time to GIVER!!😎

Here's hoping the beans cooperate in a timely manner for you. Been very wet too down here around Des Moines and Ft. Dodge. Several fields haven't even been touched yet.

I delivered a couple of cultivators to Midwest back in January and February of this year. Good folks up there. Very friendly to work with and quick to off load a flat bed! (I'm sure the temperature had nothing to do with it...)

You should take a look at link belts they make great temporary fixes or even long-term fixes. Great thing to keep on a service truck.
Strange. We had similar issues with the same shields off and plugging problem yesterday. Our main difference was flat corn. We had a tornado go through and broke off a lot of patches of corn 4-6" high. And broken corn doesn't stand up with the snoots😤. Wonderful reports. Farmers can say, "Been there. Done that." City friends can learn and understand why there's a truck and cart blocking the road.
My corn I Pa 23 -25 percent. Soybeans no where ready. Glad to see you got combine up and going quickly. Good job
Combines sure have come a long way. We used a Massey 510, and Deere 7700. long time ago.
Zack, I am surprised your corn cobs are broken apart so much. Must be our longer season climate that keeps our cobs in one piece out on the High Plains. Most varieties we use have smaller cobs.

I broke the exact same belt on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. We had an early freeze this past weekend and are waiting on it to dry out after the hurricane remnants to start cotton harvest. Good luck to you.

We had snow on Sunday. The problem some of the farmers are having now with their beans is that the bean is growing inside the pod.

Mother Nature can really be challenging, and when your living depends on the weather it can be a big gamble. My Daddy was in asphalt paving business, in the late sixties and during the seventies, and there was no work when it rained and winter time wasn't any better because the asphalt plant couldn't run if the temps were to cold.
I have learned from this channel that farming is 50% fixing things that break more often than it seems they should.

Love your videos. Very educational. Not a farmer myself. I have a 50 mile commute to work through he country. As I look at the fields being harvested I wondered why I would see certain rows being left behind. Now I know.
The rows you're seeing left are probably there for an insurance adjuster to inspect
We have the same problem down here in Kentucky. Beans ready and green in the same row. Our plus side is corn is done.

I've got about 400+ hours in farming sim 2017, but it's easier on there to reset your combine when drive it in the river.

Hi Zach! Long time watcher, first time commenting. How do you go about measuring the moisture of the corn? Is there a specific gauge or tool? Curious about the moisture points system.
Any Amish farmers up that way? Do you all get along with them? What are some of the different ways they harvest from your methods! It would be a great vlog!
I don't know your crop conditions and settings but typically if you are getting broken cob in the tank it's because your concave is set too tight. Just a thought. Love your videos keep up the good work!

I noticed that your combine turns over a couple times we have a Massey Ferguson with a Cummins you touch the key and it’s running. Unlike the challenger it makes a sweet noise and nice cold starts. We also have to Versatile 4WD articulated tractors and they both have Cummins in them and they are the same story touch the key there running sound great too.
Jasper Kraft Nothing wrong with the engine turning over for a second or two. Helps get the oil pressure up a bit before getting started.
This is a 13.1 L Deere the big engine. But I've noticed My buddies 8235r turns over a few times before it starts
depending on the software level in the ecm, the engine may have to turn 2 revolutions before the crank sensor and the cam sensor pulse so the ecm knows which injector to fire . also that sounds like a gear reduction starter, it doesn't spin the engine as fast as a direct drive starter like cummins, but it has 2x the torque.
Weather seems screwed up all over the place. Who. Knows what it gonna bring. As soon as it looks like we're back to normal it does something goofy. Good luck and we'll be watching😊😊‼️
