Great job!
+CoseCinesi Thanks. Great quad and I highly recommend for those of us that are disappointed in the Cheerson. There is no comparison. Much better, faster quad..
Good Vid Mr. P
Hello, do you have a write up on this build? I'm thinking about ditching the gimbal and going this route with flying. Looks like she flys nice! Great video.
+NextStepINC Don't have a write up per say. Granted, this flies like a sports quad without the gimbal. My new 450 build is bigger with the gimbal, but flies like a truck. What do you prefer? Sport flying or video taking? Granted, the video from this 330 is not bad without the gimbal. Anyway, the frame is a flamewheel 330. Motors are just standard 2212's. Like what the Cheerson CX 20 has. In fact, these motors are from my old CX 20. 20 amp SimonK ESC's, 8 inch DJI/Cheerson CX 20 slotted props. I have the Arducopter ARM 2.6 board. There are others of course. Some LED lights and my Boscam camera that also transmits and records video. That's about it... Not an expensive build. I guess you have plenty of options for the transmitter/receiver. In my club, the most popular transmitter is the Spektrum DX7/6/8. Much more expensive than my Flysky here. Flysky works for me at $60... Good luck.
Fantastic!
Hi again, screwed up my cx20 open source. can I put a used apm or have mine reflashed. having a hard time. any ideas?
+philip dangelo I'd just rebuild the Cheerson like I did. All you need is an APM, Flamewheel 330 frame, the motors and ESC's. Not hard to do.
Nice review 👍 info ....goodluck ...cheers
Cool build I might just do the same with mine what esc's did u use?
+Camshaft Shaft 20 amp esc's. You can get them for as little as $5.00 a piece. 20 amp should be quite sufficient. Good Luck.
+MrPolymers cool thanks Mr polymers:)
need special controller? can't I use the stock esc . this is a brand new. I would like to utilize everything I can.
+philip dangelo No, I use the Flysky FS i6/FS TH9X. That's the beauty of building your own. You can pick and choose components.
She looks like a great flyer. My Cx20 is probably the worst quad I have ever flown. She has a mind of her own much of the time. Placing it in loiter she did a complete flip at 100 feet up. I managed to get her back under control before she hit the ground. She did the same thing doing a complete flip after being put into gps hold. This time she was about 20 feet up and I could not recover before she hit the deck breaking both landing gear off. Had her on Mission Planner which did not seem to help much. She is on the shelf now and will be for some time to come. Good thing I have other quads to keep my fix in check. Thanks for the video.
+dheller777 Yes. The Cheerson was always a problem for me. Amazing I was able to get some of the videos I did. Finally, I just decided to rebuild it. Not too hard once you've rebuilt a quad or two..;)
+dheller777 just configure compass rotation correct
My Cheerson had an odd behavior with left/right roll. Not a compass issue. Plus the Cheerson's components are too proprietary and a pain in the ass to work on. Build them...
+MrPolymers for me mostly YAW is crazy.... I have now my 2nd CX-20 which is much more crazy... I plan to buld an octocopter from the 2 CX-20's and a hula hoop would be the cheap frame holding the motors :)
.. had a CX20, worst quad that I have ever owned, fell from the sky several times, would not ho’d GPS position ever, and finally it just flew away one day when I put it in GPS, I guess it was headed back to China, I never found it .... good riddance ... terrible quadcopter ...😡
it all depends on what kind of flying you plan to do
+ziggyzbeak This flies totally different than the Cheerson. More of a sport quad than a camera platform. I now have OSD telemetry on the Flamewheel. I'll show how that works in an upcoming video..
where do I get a new FC?
+philip dangelo APM 2.6 or APM 2.8 are a couple suggestions. Search then via eBay.
could I just take the original configuration of the cx-20 guts and put it on the frame. im solderphobic so im worried about having to do a lot of soldering.
+Quadcoptercrazy Well, I guess you could but the proprietary design is not good. I had a problem with mine anyway. The Ardupilot 2.6 is a far superior APM. The frame of the Cheerson is also a big negative..
I haven't even gotten to take it on its maiden flight yet, hovered it a little in my apt and it broke one of the arms, talk about brittle plastic.but the guts survived so I just wanted to transfer them over to another frame. no way am I wanting to shell out 30 bucks for a replacement cx-20 frame when the plastic is so brittle.
Well, you are learning what I already have experienced. In my case, I got Banggood the seller to replace the frame when a prop flew off. It still cost me a few bucks to have it shipped. No more pre-built quads for me. The more I build, the easier they get. Please don't try a RTH without first calibrating the compass and doing a position hold check..
Good luck.
Thank you for the advice, my first quad was the syma x8c and that thing takes a beating, ive crashed it hard on asphalt and concrete and it still flies fine, they call the cx-20 hobby grade and the syma x8c toy grade, just on durability alone i think the cx-20 should be considered toy grade. the syma's plastic is much more bendable so it takes a beating easily.
+Quadcoptercrazy I agree. I'm one of the guys to spend $300 on the Cheerson. Now, they can be purchased for just over $200. Still, you'd be better off to build. It's really not hard if you review some of the CZcams videos about building them.
So it's not really a rebuilt CX-20 then if all you kept was the motors??!
+Tom Rowan Yes. Just the motors. The issue with the Cheerson is the proprietary flight controller and the poor workmanship on the electronics. Specifically the ESC's. My Cheerson kept losing capacitors in the body. No wonder people have had out of control scenarios with it.
Why don't you just go into setup of your TX-> Aux channels and just substitute a switch for the pot to start your camera?
+TheGusK Actually tried that. The camera only senses the dial and not a switch.

nice for racing but will never film as good as the cheerson can, to much jello effect and hate watching the props in a video, but I am sure this was built more for racing and FPV than just a filming platform.
+THXkid Yes, for performance.. No gimbal. That kills performance. This has a low profile, it's the quad on my latest video.
Neat. I converted my CX-20 to an F450 and the last thing to go was the motors as well. I've since replaced them with SunnySky 980kv motors. You can have a look here, rotorbuilds.com/build/24
+WhiffleX Yes, guess what, those are the motors for my 450 build too... Still awaiting them and another video transmitter to complete the build.
+MrPolymers 980kv might be slightly underpowered for a fully loaded F450 but I'm squeaking by at a 2:1 weight to thrust ratio. BTW rotorbuilds.com is a new web project of mine if you want post your custom builds there.
Thanks. I really wanted some motors slightly bigger than my Flamewheel 330/Cheerson CX 20, but I guess I did not look hard enough. No problems. All my ESC's and motors I have installed plugs to make removal a snap... That's what nice with these Flamewheels. Much easier to work on and solid as a rock..
I think a more ideal choice for an F450 would be 800kv, but those would have put me way out of budget. The 980kv were just right in terms of price and they do the trick.
+MrPolymers Question for you regarding the motors on the CX20. Where in the hell can you purchase extra motor mount screws? I ordered a new motor and the hardware kit (for CX20) and neither package came with the fricken motor mount screws.
This thing is lame compared to my blade 350 Carbon Fiber xD
+Angel Gtz We have Blade 350's with my club. Sorry, this flies circles around it. It's low profile and I also built my 450 low profile. For FPV and not a gimbaled platform.
+MrPolymers id like to see a video of that! If youre right I will share your video everywhere I can And sell my 350 for a cx hows that?
+Angel Gtz OK, I belong to a club. The problem with one of our members who has a Blade, is that he flies it low and slow. Not a good comparison if I were to fly next to him..;)
