    Great video! I've been watching a lot of various quadcopter "how-to videos" on CZcams, and from start to finish...this might be the finest I've seen so far. Sharp focus, good audio with well paced narration. My point being your video was easy to follow, well explained, without being boring or excessive at any time. I'd like to see more of this type from you! You're great at it, and the r/c community could benefit. Thanks again!

      Thanks for the optimistic feedback! Sounds like you came away with info you can use and didn't get to bored in the process. That's exactly what I try to bring to the table. Definitely much more to come.

      Dustin Dunnill Yeah, just got my CX-20 in the mail yesterday...so I'm soaking up all the information that I can get! I learned a lot from your video, the only thing that would help more, is if you put some links to some of the new equipment. Atleast I'd know what to call it, where I could start my price shopping search.

      I see you are working late in HI. I am a member of RC Groups and before your video looked at the forum on the CX20, it has 67k+ posts. But your video and links were the best and a map for the direction I want to go. I had a small quad with FPV and really enjoyed it ready to go to the next level. BTW investing the $5 for your work is the cheapest investment ever to learn.

    • @tdracing13
      @tdracing13 Před 8 lety

      I ran through all the calibrations and flew two batteries through it and it flew great! Unfortunately it started to act funny in position hold mode and flying uncontrollably, I landed it and switched to manual mode and it flew great until the prop fell off and it crashed... Lesson learned, I believe it was acting funny due to the vibration from the loose prop. I calibrated both times, should you calibrate every time you fly?

    this just proves what I have always said.
    cheerson makes a solid product, and with little modifications such as these they can easily compete with much more expensive products on the market.
    can you imagine these kind of features, from the factory, for under $400-$500?
    I think cheerson could pull it off and finally make legitimate FPV quads available at a super affordable price point

      Dustin Dunnill Hello Dustin, how many layers of the zeal tape did you use? Would it be possible for you to provide more detail on the Sony output cable you built? Thanks.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Hey Greg, just one layer. I put a small square of it on all 4 corners of flight controller. I also mounted the receiver on zeal but not sure if that was necessary. The sheet you get goes a long way.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Hi Romeo,
      Practice, practice and practice 100 times more than you think is necessary on a toy quad while your waiting so you don't have an expensive crash with cx20 and your mods :).
      Zeal squares on 4 corners of flight controller is all that's needed. More will waste it and add weight to cx20.
      Yes. Great idea using zeal to combat video jello for camera, but you may want to have a safety tether since camera can move around at angle much more than flight controller.

  • @dant9239
    @dant9239 Před 8 lety +2

    +Terry Bennett The open source versions (both the CX 20 and Quanum Nova are "Open Source") allow you to use an amazing software package called Arducopter/Mission Planner. With that software package you can do a number of things, such as update the firmware, tune the flight characteristics, download and analyze flight logs, trouble-shoot potential issues, and the coolest thing is that you can create a flight plan that you upload to your quadcopter, that it will perform autonomously.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Your welcome Chris. I tried some tuning but always seemed that default setting were best for my setup.
      You can only tune in mission planner if you run your pitch or roll (or both) signal wires through the flight controller as I've done (check rcgroups cx20 forum in description on how).

    Hi Dustin, thanks for the video. I had a question regarding your telemetry coaxial pigtail cables. have you had issues with large amounts of loss whilst running the the pigtails? I'm experiencing around 12db of extra loss when running the pigtails on a 433mhz telemetry radio using 4inch RG316 coaxial pigtail.

    Great info vid Dustin! I'm on the fence between this one and the 3D X8. I was leaning toward X8 as it already comes with a lot of things I want in my 1st big boy camera quad, plus I saw your review of that thing flying with no landing or cam and looked a bit sporty as well. Only thing is I hear it's a bit cheaply made. Since it for around the same money what are your thoughts between these two. I will be using it for cam stuff mainly so WYT?

    Hi Dustin, Quick question about adjusting mission planner spec.s for the heavier battery load? Have you updated the hover throttle & RTH parameters to compensate for the additional weight? If so can you suggest some starting figures for testing???

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      +Mark Webb Yes, you will have to raise your throttle MID parameter in mission planner to compensate for more weight you add. I think mine was around 600 fully loaded. If you hover for a few minutes then connect to MP, there is another value where it thinks the throttle mid should be set at. I forget the name but it will give you a good starting point.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Thanks. Flyaways happen to all GPS copters. Even DJI phantoms have around a 30% flyaway rate. Mainly due to pilot error not waiting for a good GPS lock. Other reasons could be interference, component failure/glitch. I've never had a single one myself.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      +Janusha Premarathne Yes, it can do it out of the box but needs programming for route through PC. Add a set of the 3dr telemetry radios and the 3dr tower app on phone or tablet/PC and you can have real-time auto missions like bebop or phantom.

    @user-me2ih9mw4p Před 9 lety +1

    Thank you very much for this video! Very interesting upgrades! I've got some questions... may be my english not so good, but i don't understand
    what for you using 7th channel?
    Battery stiked to transmiter used to supply all transmiter or only for booster? Where is your FPV reciever?
    Witch configuration, you think is better when compass in dome, and GPS in dome? Or vice versa?
    GPS can be isolated by usual foil?
    What do you think about replace original shell for F450? I think it will be better in terms on wind resistance because of design, and it will be more stable because of distance between motors, and this frame allow with no problems use 10" props, but i afraid of low motor power.Whitch motors a default on CX-20 (mean KV)?
    Watched some of your videos, it is really cool, but i'am disapointed with image quality, and awful vibration. Actually i'am not satisfied with quality of airshooting by GoPro 4, may be i want too much for action camera... but i'am looking for a really good camera for airshooting.
    What do you think about props? Witch one are better? Have you think about upgrade to carbon props?
    I really like self loking props, but i dont know how to balance them( Do you ballance your props?
    May be using a bit heavyer gimball will be better stabilized?
    Sorry for to many questions, i've found you experience very exciting )
    Thank you

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Hi, wow that's a lot to absorb. I'll try and answer what I can:
      1. I use The 7th channel in flight controller set to use autotune as mentioned in video. Please visit the rcgroups link in description for info on how.
      2. TX still uses AA batteries and lipo is only powering booster. You could wire lipo to power both if you wanted but I did not.
      3.FPV receiver is the RC832 (not shown in video) which attaches to end of easycap. Check CZcams for basic how to setup FPV.
      4.I have only done compass in puck and GPS in body dome as shown in video. Visit rcgroups to see what others have to say about other way around.
      5. The frame is also talked about extensively in rcgroups link. Supposedly more stable but it is now like a car without a body. If that matters to you. I like closed body.
      6. Yes some of my earlier videos have bad vibrations. I am still tuning them out. Resolution just depends on camera. I'm using a

    Hi, can I ask please, you moved your aux2 dial to the side for your gimball, I have put a G"D gimball same as yours on my cx20 connected to aux1 but I find its over sensitive, ie a very small movement is required for a lot of tilt on the camera, is there a way of reducing the gain at all?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Good question Steve. I have the same "sensitivity" issue. It helps if you pitch the camera all the way up and down a few times to it's full extent while it's acquiring GPS. Don't ask me why but it seems to help a little.

    Hey. I just put a gopro hero 4 on my Walkera G2D gimbal, and the video is a little shaky. I'm not exactly sure why. It has a video out cable (silicone like yours) going to the xmitter. Could that length of cable vibrate in the wind and shake the camera? Did you have this problem? The camera is mounted to the gimbal using a velcro strap which seems tight enough. Thanks.

I would like to purchase the Cx - 20 and would also like to get at least 1 mile. But If I have to invest too much I may as well get the phantam 3 advanced for $800 which is on sale currently. Please give me your input, thanks

    When you added your DJI 9443 size props did you have to change any settings on the apm? I added 9443 props and mine is extremely unstable and wobbly. Did yours do the same?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Hi Dylan, I have the 9450 authentic dji props. I first tried carbon fiber cheapies and they made it very unstable and I crashed but vibrations were the culprit. Make sure your props are balanced, try the zeal gel under flight controller, make sure center of gravity is good and it should be much better. Ultimately wire it up for autotune capability (instructions in rcgroups link in description of this video) and it should fly butter smooth.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      Your welcome. You'll want to first test fly with the new props in soft grass wide open area and don't go higher than 10-15 feet to see how it flies. Try all the modes with new props. If it seems out of whack then yes. I would look into hooking up channel 6 or 7 from rx to flight controller for auto tune capabilities. For more on it check the rcgroups forum link in video description. Also this will tell you what the flight controller software is all about

    Howdy, Dustin - When I was ill I watched this video and, over time, purchased all the parts I could afford to mod a Quanum Nova and TX accordingly. It's Easter '17, and I'm finally starting. It would be cool to add telemetry. (I'm a newbie.) So, I looked at the forums link below and didn't know where to go. Maybe a telemetry mod might be a bit much... I don't know much about soldering, and I don't have a spare Android... Even figuring out how to apply the Kyosho tape is... again, newbie. Anyhow, might you please be so kind as to help me with more specifics regarding forum links to mod this quad? Maybe a quick help on how to regulate the 2W TX booster including "regulator" product and Lipo wire/down product descriptions. Great work! Thank you!

      Hi Tim, basically your just disconnecting one wire going down to gimbal so it goes from a trx channel directly into the FC. Everything is there you need.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Sounds like you got it right. The new models have the UART plug. You may just have to swap the TX/RX wires on your telemetry radio. Then it should work with your radio set. You can also change telemetry settings in the mission planner software if needed. Check out the CX-20 forums on rcgroups.com

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      It will set it's home point when you arm. Just make sure you have good satellites. A good way to test is by trying to arm in loiter mode then take off in manual mode. It will not arm in loiter unless GPS lock is decent. Once armed in loiter flip back to manual, take off and fly how you like. It should have a decent accurate RTL if done this way.

    good video,
    seems you went through a lot to get it to where you want it,,
    I know you said this aircraft was reasonably priced, but for a little more you could have avoided a lot of work, by just purchasing the 3DR iRIS PLUS,, Its my fifth multirotor, and most def the most capable, in EVERY respect, including the price , before buying a gimbal and fpv gear etc, you can get a bare bones set up new for under 600 bucks, with telemetry radio and auto flight capabilities its a great deal, not to mention the companies outstanding customer service, those guys are terrific.
    its a great open platform copter, and does mostly everything you went over in this vid,
    including telemetry , autonomous flights , limited only to the battery life, (providing you shut down your geo fence, through the pixhawk setup which is very very user friendly using APM planner online,, )and your right about that battery , I have three of them and their great, the only thing I may have to improve, and I have not checked this yet, is the range of my fpv, set up,which I just ordered online and have not received yet, but will most certainly experiment with . I currently use three different cams, a go pro knock off, which is great, however, if your streaming you cant record,,, which is strange,
    I also have a mobius which is outstanding, and finally I have a Yuneec CGO1 cam which auto transmits without a transmitter , it has internal transmitter, , however the quality of the vid is not as good as the mobius but very acceptable,,
    your vid was very informative, and well made, good job,
    and good flying

      Thanks Elmo. Bare bones with no FPV for $600? This one cost me around that price all together so it is a deal but you definitely won't get customer service and the quality will not be par with 3dr. But it's a good GPS quad for cheap to start and learn on if you have some tinker ability.

    Hello, I recently got the Cheerson CX-20 and the Self-Locking propellers from the DJI Phantom to go on it. I did some research on the propellers and saw that they are usable on the Cheerson. However, when I put them on, it seems that some stick out more than the others even though I tightened it the most it can go. There is pictures of it that I linked at the bottom of this post. Also, my biggest problem is that when ever I hit the RTH button, it starts to come back to me and then all of a sudden looses power or slows down and crashes to the ground. This has happened twice and the second time it did a good amount of damage. I'm not sure if it's defective or I accidentally hit the throttle (even though I thought that when in RTH mode, using the throttles have no use whether you put them up or down or whatever). Does anyone have an answer to this? I have gone through 2 sets of propellers so far (The default ones, which broke from the first RTH fail, and the Self-Locking DJI Phantom ones, which just broke from the second RTH fail)? I am almost ready to just replace it for another one.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 9 lety

      I looked at your pics and something is not right. I have a few questions to ask so I can better help:
      Are they genuine dji props?
      Are the mount bolts the props screw onto all the same length? (Measure).
      One of my props is a little harder to screw on than all the rest. Try and apply more pressure to screw on the prop that is not going on. They should all be down very close to motor.
      Your prop issue is most likely why you crashed.
      Important: since you had some crashes open the body and check for anything loose ie: compass, GPS etc.
      Visit the forum I have linked in description.

    • @matthewvalenti5276
      @matthewvalenti5276 Před 9 lety

      Dustin Dunnill I asked on another forum whether or not the props would work and they said yes (I got these: www.ebay.com/itm/4-Pairs-9-9443-Self-Locking-Propeller-Prop-CW-CCW-For-DJI-E-series-E300-Motors-/291229589483?bvflow=0&rd=1&rmvSB=true)
      I tried putting them on the drone that I had already crashed with the default props so that may be the issue. I ordered another CX-20 so I will wait until it gets here so I can see if the props fit on it. If it still does not fit, do you recommend I get new props? If so, do you know of any self locking/tightening props that would fit without any trouble?
      Thanks.
      P.S. I have asked on rcgroups before but didn't get an answer so another site recommended that I ask you.

    Hi Dustin, I was looking at the extension cable link that you have for the telemetry. it is a SMA male to male. now i dont have my telemetry kit yet, but shouldn't it be a female - male extension? (thats if using stock antenna). from what i know if using a circular antenna i would need an adapter RP-SMA to SMA.

      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      +Mike Vlascov it's hard to get ahold of the exact cables sometimes and an adapter only weighs a couple grams and are cheap. I'm sorry but I forgot the connector gender at the moment. I'd get a bag of adapters and you'll have some for future craft also.

    You did well with propellers 1047? I bought the 1050 and I have not tried it yet, I have multistar 2216 engines and 20A esc, you think with ogirinales drives have problems with these propellers? how long battery gives you the propellers 10 "and how battery?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      I never got the adapters to put the 1047 on stock motors before my big crash (see video). I have to move to new shell and maybe try.
      I think stock motors should be able to handle the 1050..but best to exhaust a full battery in a hover test and check motor temps immediately afterwards. If they are too hot to hold comfortably then the motors cannot handle. :)

      I have Multistar 2216 engines led 920kv, have told me that the 1050 propeller can come to touch each other, you have had such problems with the 1047? if not fly are 1050 or not ... I'm scared that the pro

    This is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing this info. I will be following your model to the T. I am currently waiting for the parts to arrive. I have a couple questions for you though.. I bought a GoPro Hero4 Session for FPV and recording. I was unaware that it does not have an anolog video out on this particular camera. After looking at info from the GoPro site, I found that it DOES have a live feed but, only through micro hdmi port in HD format. (1080p/60) Could I just simply use a converter (www.hobby-wing.com/arris-fpv-hdmi-to-av-converter.html) before plugging into the FPV transmitter? I would think this would solve the issue. Please let me know your thoughts?

      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Thanks. The converter is what I would do bit I've never attempted. You can find some slim ones on eBay

    Say their was an fpv screen onboard the transmitter. Would the parabolic dish interfere with video playback?

    Hi I'm interested in buy a cheerson cx-20 have been doing some research on it, my big thing is I would love to use my table to monitor the video being that I shoot a lot of music videos as well as weddings. so what would I need to get that to work. I'm thinking may gopro with a gimbal for steady video.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Do you mean tablet? You'll have to have an android tablet , FPV setup on the Drone and have an FPV receiver and an easycap you plug into your tablet which converts video to show on your tablet along with easycap viewer app.

    I can't seem to find the taller f450/550 legs, I ordered some from eBay and just like you they came as the shorter ones. it says 150mm height on every eBay add so idk where to find the taller ones.

      That's too bad. I got mine from my local hobby shop which were long. But also ordered spares which were short. Maybe look for "long" in description.

    I am using original 9540 dji prop.the motors are getting hot (I can hold them with hand after flight).Is there abything to worry about it?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      I don't think so. One or two of mine get a little hot after flight bit no issues. If you can hold them without hurting at all they should be fine.

    Hi Dustin, thanks a lot for this video ! I just learn a lot about Mod capable.
    Have u the interference between the Wifi of the Camera and the transmitter? because there are interference between and i cant fly with my wifi camera ON.
    What is the solution?
    Thanks,

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Hi Nate, Don't use WiFi on camera when flying. The controller and camera WiFi are both 2.4ghz and you will crash. Use a 5.8ghz FPV system with no problems.

    I am purchasing a Quanum Nova and I would like to modify it for FPV etc. Can you do a step by step from the beginning and if those mods will work with the Quanum Nova?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      I'm doing a shell swap and will try and make a step by step videobwhilebin the process. Yes, the Mods should work on the Nova (same Open source quad).

      X380 I think. Check my range mods and flights with it. It's easier to fly also.

    Hi, The 2 watt booster, your running it at 6volts,,have you run it at higher voltage? do you think it would work at 6.6v? I got one and I have a spare 6.6v life battery.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Have not tested higher than 6v. The literature actually states it is made for 5v so I'm not sure. My 6v may be pushing it a little.

    • @rayhsetwo8594
      @rayhsetwo8594 Před 8 lety +1

      +Dustin Dunnill Thanks for getting back to me. So how many hours would you say approx. have you run it on 6v? also is there a way of testing if it is working or not? reason I ask is I have used mine today, without plugging it in to the battery, so I am just using the power from the controller straight through it. I will power it on 6.6v at some stage and see how long it lasts before failing,,,if it does that is.
      BTW, I have enjoyed your videos and the mods, and the great views!!! thx.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  Před 8 lety

      Thanks Ray. I would estimate I've had 6v power to booster for maybe 5 hours total in 30min increments.

      +daniel catrihual urrutia I don't think the older models could but the newer ones may be different. sorry, i'm not sure. There is a CX20 BFS version thread on rcgroups.com maybe you can find your answer there.
