Installing Supplemental Hella Sharptone Horns on ND MX5 (but will work on any car!)

  • Anyone familiar with the MX5 knows the factory horn is awful. I've only owned the car about a month and have had people pull out in front of me and pay no attention when I lay on the horn. I will attempt to fix that in this video by adding a set of Hella Sharptone horns.
I did not want to remove the factory horn so it can continue to be used as a "courtesy" horn. It was left completely untouched and still operated from the steering wheel. I have wired the Hella horns to a separate circuit operated from a push button in the footwell. When it's needed, it's conveniently placed to hit with my left foot. The Hella horns and circuit are completely removable with no cutting, drilling or splicing for this application.
While this was completed on an MX5, this method can be applied to any car. Total install time was roughly 1.5 hours with filming included.
All items needed for the job were purchased from Amazon for ~$50.

Thank you for doing an actual proper test of 1-2 second pulses.
I wish i could like the video again. Great content!

Nice installation. When I added Hellas to my Sprinter van, I deleted the stock “meeper”. I used a different set, the Twin Tones, and when I measured the amperage, it was 6 amps per horn. So I used the relay. They would work without it, but they’re louder with it. They sound a lot like a 50s Cadillac’s horns.

I just got backed into in a supermarket parking lot. I laid on my stock horn as the car slowly approched. I was told "I didn`t hear you, I didn`t see you so It wasn`t me". Get this horn!!

The stock horn looks and sounds just like the one on my Grom. It's true that nobody reacts at all to that noise coming from such a small vehicle.

Why not use the existing horn circuit to enable the relay that came with the new horns then take 12v from the battery to the NO contact on the relay? Is cable to the existing horn accessible?

You could do that. The factory horn wiring is very accessible. I wanted to have 2 separate horn circuits. Factory horn retained for normal use and the Hella on its own switch to scare people out of the way when needed.
