What Happened To Terence Trent D'Arby? | His Spiritual Journey & Why He Changed His Name

- One could assume that being compared to superstars such as Michael Jackson and Prince is a good thing. However, Terence Trent D’Arby never let the opinions of others dictate the approach to his art throughout his career. He’s even said in interviews that he strongly believes the comparisons were more rooted in him having a similar skin tone as his predecessors than anything else. What he does believe that he has in common with the aforementioned icons is that his goal is to come from as as many different directions as possible to stretch the boundaries of what is considered to be "black music."

Sign Your Name was and still is a classic. First album as a whole is excellent.
Imagine if someone like Lucky Daye, Trevor Jackson, or Jacob Latimore remixed it. Classic all over again.
Yes it is
Yes...💜 this album.
His debut album is MAGIC!
I swear to God I listen to this song every week. It never gets old.
I never compared him to Michael or Prince, he had his OWN Style. They only say that because of his LOOKS and the way he Dressed. His singing style was his Own. ❤
Totally agree.
Facts
Compared by talent. Indeed was a praise
Played by Michael Jackson
Whitey compares us we are above that.
Sign Your Name and Wishing Well by Terence Trent D'Arby are still bangers to this day!!
Couldn't agree more!! 'If You Let Me Stay' was the jam as well.
'Frankie and Johnny' (aka F&J) still blows me away to this day. Amazing soulful, aching, emotionally raw delivery.
yes it was !
Yes Yes to both those hit songs by him. Smooth sexy flow. That whole album was a treasure.
@@elisaabolafia9542 yes i'm so happy too the universe for letting be come back to earth too share it with such giants of music as this man , & prince ,micheal , whitney the whole genre of the 80's and 90's n70's too damn we just had it going on for over 40 decades wat the hell happen .!
He definitely deserves more credit and he deserves his flowers while he's still here
Indeed!
Isn’t a shame to neglect and burry artists like him? And we have to look deep in a mirror and make a list about artists left the US, and become world sensation somewhere else? Jimmy Hendrix, Mama Cash Elliot, Tina Turner and him, born in the US, with incredible talent. No worry Mate, we have some left in the US! ???? Yeah we have Arianna Grande, Beyoncé, and a lots of big ass “ so called “ hip hop, rap, and all kind of gangsta “ artists “ we had real artists like Michael, John Lennon, “ English “ and many more we killed successfully!
Not here.....thats why he left....lol America is so racist how you expect them to give a Brotha anything
Sign Your Name and Wishing Well were hits way ahead of their time in the 80s. Shoot, D'arby's music in general was years ahead. Always nice to hear artists like him find peace later in life.
I love Jody (Watley) and I don't intend on taking anything from her but I do suspect had Terrence not aggravated the music industry big-wigs with the arrogance upon arrival, he would have scored that Grammy for Best New Artist.
I disagree. It was generic 80s - Bowie's Lets' Dance phase, Power Station, Prince, Hendrix clone Jon Butcher on and on. T had his 10 minutes and that's all he deserved. If he thought a little more or was smarter.. He could've been Jackie Wilson Wilson Pickett rolled into one - not just the imitation - he wouldn't have had to change his name. After all as Popeye said "I Yam What I Yam" but yes, I hope bottom line the dude is happy because when he was young for that 10 minutes in the 80s he had mad skills, he was a bad man. 🎶
Sadly I was deeply depressed during my teenage years and all of the songs from this album made me feel like someone was speaking to me. Along with Anita Baker, Tina Turner and Whitney plus more..
@@alwaysniccole3810 Join the club. More common than you think.
@@damemarthafalker6738 I’ve always been in the club.. Nobody noticed
Til this day he has one of the best voices in the industry!
There really is no more industry darling. It as we knew it dissolved in 2000. It was so filthy Napster blew it up and Prince sealed the deal. I would say he is the artist with the best voice but giving the industry credit is like saying your the best slave on the plantation. That was 22 years ago now it is all independent.
@@BlindMellowJellyInc yes, and he still has one of the best voices
@@wurls1347 Now you sound like the annoying friend in Pooty Tang repeating everything already said😅
Sign Your Name is still one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. It’s up there with Human Nature - Diamonds and Pearls - Father Figure❤️❤️❤️
Just some of my favorites.
Sign Your Name....will never stop being in my playlist or heart. He made my childhood happy. Perfect blend of rasp and softness with his vocals, not to mention consistent depth to his lyrics.
He was truly ahead of his time, but I wish he was still dropping music like back in the day. His music still holds weight to this day
He literally dropped his 12th album last year in March. He never stopped making music.
@@indigoldd just not on the radio. Gonna go look it up now though
@@haroldgarner9069 Ah yeah he doesn’t make the type of music that greedy labels can profit off of lol
@@indigoldd true. Quality is always best
Truthfully every album since Hardline (Symphony, Fish, Vibrator, Wild Card, etc.) is *better* than the previous. Sananda / TTD is one of few who improves as he evolves.
His hairstyles were definitely ahead of his time! Heck his whole look is very relevant today.
I swear, you pick the best random people!! I used to love Terrance and never even thought about him until my notification popped up, I was like, "Oh shizzle I totally forgot about him! Let me grab my RRG snack and watch!" Love your content sis! 🥰🇬🇭
RRG snacks?! I want some! 😝 I love them! They definitely inspired me to start this channel.
@Trace713 Ooh have you tried their Green Apple Licorice? I love those. 😍 And their Cookies n' Cream popcorn is delicious as well.
“Dance Little Sister” and “Wishing Well” was his greatest songs. He was so unique and original. He was the male Sade. He was Neo-Soul before it became a thang.
He was also good friends with Michael Hutchence and performed in Australia with INXS after Michael passed. His vocals sounded amazing with the band.
I love that performance! ♥️
@@gloriahamner3788 I wouldn’t be surprised. “Things” happen in those circles: especially when people are young. I wish them both well, and I hope that both have healed from the tragic loss of MH. We was a fantastic talent as well. 💞
Wow. That sounds like a union not to be missed. Loved INXS. Not sure them throwing their hats into the vocal competition genre was a good look. Particularly after the guy who won the contest had such a nasty falling out with them.
I wished inxs let him be lead singer, he was perfect for them
Yes, he was indeed friends with Michael, but I had no idea he performed with INXS.
When we were kids, Wishing well was my little brother's favorite song. I can still remember him singing it.
I'm glad he allowed himself to get it right. He was an underrated singer. Wishing Well was a jam, however, let's not forget about my personal favorite. Sign your name was a hit as well. It's just something about that song that gives me chills. I song his soul on that song.
Mine is 'Let's Go Forward.' Nobody mentions it but it's as powerful a performance as the best he's done on any other track. It makes me FEEL.
He should have stayed off the crack 😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
"Introducing the Hardline" was EPIC!
The most underrated singer of all time, period!!!
Word
🙄
The 'Hardline" album is an EXCELLENT body of work. One of few I can listen to without skipping any tracks.
Omg yes. I've never skipped a track on that album.
I think the reason it resonates so strongly is because it emanated from a very real place. I've heard the expression, the artist leaving his heart and soul in the material. I think this is one of those finer examples. Plus, Terrence had the raw talent to put it right over the top.
One of the best albums of all time
@@damemarthafalker6738 yeah I haven't been able to really hone in on whatever issues he was dealing with on that record but his emotions really shine through in such a palpable way! You don't listen to this record: you FEEL it.
His earlier works & debut album we're golden. Not to forget that smooth singing voice.
Let’s get to the Root is giving Unsung the run for their money with these videos 🖤.
Big facts! I love this channel.
It really is!!! I love Unsung too but their episodes haven't been hitting it lately
@@hometowngirlncurls5669 Yes and this season of unsung is sooooo disappointing. I don’t recall even watching.
@@lynej2011 I haven't watched either. Smh
I am glad to hear that he is doing well and seems to have peace in his life. A profound performer who is still with us.
I still love Terrence Trent D'Arby.
He has a beautiful way of approaching life. He’s still performing and releasing new music. I’ll never stop playing his music. ♥️
His debut is one of my ALL TIME favorite ECLECTIC albums. Delicate with Desree' is a GORGEOUS duet as well! ❤️
I may have heard the song Delicate once some years ago but it doesn't seem familiar to me. I will take a listen. Thank you for sharing. And I hope that this channel provides an update video on vocalist Des'ree.
@@blackamericanlesbianprofes4357 👍🏾
@@blackamericanlesbianprofes4357 He had a lot of decent songs off both the Symphony or a Damn and Vibrator albums (Holding on to You, She Kissed Me, Let Her Down Easy, Letting Go, Castilian Blue, and so much more). Those albums were more rock and roll heavy. Try googling some of his live performances, especially from Symphonic Damn concert tour around '95-ish. He's amazing singing live.
@@syncopation0 Thank you for sharing, and I will have to take a listen.
My favorite songs of his is: 'If you let me stay" "Delicate" and "She's Sad" Still loving his music in 2022!
🎶 Sign your name across my heart
I want you to be my baby
Sign your name across my heart
I want you to be my lady 🎶
That song is still a jam 😎
You know it!
"WOW, HE'S BEEN ON AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY WITHIN HIS LIFE YOU KNOW?"
He’s one of the best singers who ever lived.
I REMEMBER HIM SO WELL SAYING HE'S THE NEXT BIG STAR 🌟
Sadly, Terence Trent D'Arby was a modern example of how fans and the music industry can make you and break you at the same time. His ego and his attitude cost him his career. When you give people in the industry your behind to kiss, word spreads like wildfire and next thing you know, you are black balled and no one wants to touch you. It's too bad,. Terence is a very talented artist despite being compared to Michael Jackson and Prince. He had a unique sound of his own.
I think his comparison to Prince was inevitable, given his can't-pin-me-down style. All three artists -- Prince, Terence, Michael --were obviously inspired by James Brown, so maybe that had something to do with the comparisons.
Yepp...he was good...more than that. He was literally the soundtrack of my teenage years!✌
Very true his ego and attitude finished his career
👍👍Exact
@@robgoodsight6216 Ditto. I had to go through the catalogue again earlier today after stumbling on this video. His songs are still as impressive as the first time I heard them. And that's saying quite a bit considering how many albums from that same era I use to love, I now am a little embarrassed to cop to.
His first four albums went HARD. He’s made other good albums (Wildcard, etc), but those first four don’t have a bad track. Straight 🔥 from the diminutive genius with the massive talent.
I always thought he was an Original Artist and I still do. Beautiful Unique Voice. Blessings
I spent a hour with Terence on a train to the midlands, we had a great time and talked about music, he said he would put my name on his guest list of his next concert. A wonderful and charming man.
ONE of the reasons why you don't hear anything (or much) from D'Arby on air nowadays is at the peak of his career, he pissed off so many radio program directors that they flatly refused to play his music. Between his ego, his arrogance and simply not showing up for interviews and sponsored appearances, a LOT of people in the industry decided he wasn't worth the effort. Even sleeping with the daughter of Sony UK's A&R director wasn't enough to save his deal. It's a pity. He could've SHOULD'VE been a superstar but his attitude and mouth killed his career. He just overplayed the "superstar" role before he earned the title.
Oh snap! I love when my supporters add some extra hot tea! ☕️ ☕️ ☕️
Wow.
@@JuicyPopEntertainment I was living between London and Ostend Belgium during that time. Quite a few people knew of that aspect.
😳😳
That was common knowledge back then. They were in a relationship.
Sign Your Name is a straight classic.
This is one career trajectory that baffles me ad infinitum. This dude had the GOODS. I was a huge fan from 'Hardline.' Everything he needed to be a superstar was in place. Terrence is a solid talent. He could compete with the best of them. It is sinfully outrageous how he has been ignored. Almost borderline perverse. I don't understand the brick wall. But I strongly believe, had he just focused on finding that crack in the obstruction which detained him, he'd discover a breakthrough and achieved a second resurgence. So many of his albums are nothing short of masterpieces. And they've aged impeccably well. Terrence, I have love for you, brother. Always.
I am pretty sure he doesnt care! His life is as he wants it. makes terrific music, wife and family, he could tour outside his country bu chooses not to. He has had his resurgance and his true fans know it. He just does not have that worldwide fame but does he want it?
Dude had a voice on him
Wishing well is still the jam!!!
He is such a unique talent. Always happy to see artist from the my youth doing well. The one thing I admired about him was his courage not to give up as well as him moving where he found peace. 🙏🏾❤️
He arrived like a whirlwind and then turned his back on pop and then focused on musical art works
Terence/Sananda is a straight up genius and his vocal ability and music are absolutely phenomenal. His sophmore album was brilliant but not supported and promoted by his label who thought it was too leftfield from the first album. He still makes and releases amazing music on his own label in Italy where he lives with his family
❤awesome ty
Sadly, his Italian -based music is unfocused and poorly produced. I suspect being on certain medicines (coping with the tough road away from major record labels / MJ allegedly blocking his career on their joint record company) has contributed to this... Wildcard was his last great album.
Neither Flesh Nor Fish has become one of my favorite records, but i only discovered it about 5 years ago when a music critic referred to it as “unlistenable” and got me curious. Friggin fell in LOVE with it once i listened to it.
Thank God you are still here love your music
My mom grew up with him and his family at church in Deland, Fl. I remember meeting him and he was so nice. He use to send my mom pictures from his tour. Love it 💕
Terrence is my First Cousin we used too beat on wash pans and play the scrub boards in Church in New Smyrna Beach Fla. Chruch of God Apostolic Faith. His Stepdad Is Bishop James Darby Sr Pastor Refuge Church Deland Fla. If you think he can sing you outh to hear his mom, Brother Andre, Sisters Sherry And Lisa as well as our Uncle Fields. It is a talented Family.

I moved from the USA to Munich Germany in 1982. Maybe a year later, I met Terrence in a club in Munich and we dated for awhile. He was very shy and kind. He was making music, but had not become famous yet. Always wondered what he has been up to the past years.
@@Sunshine2667 Wow 🙂 He was always very handsome.
@@ettas996 He was. At the time we met I was living with my mom, and he called me often. I must have been about 17 then. My Mom was impressed at how polite he was when he called. I moved out a bit later, and could no longer be reached there. Cell phones didn't exist then. I happened to be standing in line at a grocery store with my mother and noticed a pop magazine with his picture on the cover. I told my mom, hey, that is Terry! The guy you thought was so nice when he called Mom. She said oh, he is so good looking as well - and famous now! 😄
The wild card album is fire as well, released at the transition of name to Sananda
When he sung "Whose loving You" was awesome💕too! He is still a fave for me💕
The industry built up enormous hype for Terence's American launch, comparing him to Prince and Michael Jackson, who were at their peaks at the time. He also had a large ego. He came off as being needlessly arrogant, seeing as how he had not achieved success in the states yet. All of this backfired as there was no way for anyone to live up to this hype. The record company misplayed his hand by not allowing his career to build on its own.
I tried to give Terrence Trent Darby a chance, but I only like two songs from him. Wishing Well and Jamaican Blue. I think he definitely overestimated his talents. In his interviews, he would speak in a pseudo British accent and be on some new age mumbo jumbo stuff. So I definitely think he warded off some fans. Then his name change to Sananda Maitreya a little bit after Prince became the Symbol, seemed like he was biting. I had one female black friend who liked his music but didn't in his music videos that his love interests where solely white women.
Terrence/Sananda had success with his 1st album despite him in certain interviews slagging or criticizing certain artists. So I believe he couldn't artistically deliver. Not that he was being boxed in.
He actually felt he was better than he actually was. What I found annoying was the arrogance. No matter how good your music sounds, personal arrogance cuts down the vibe of the music. Kanye is not arrogant, at least not like TTD, who was at best, very average.
TTD was one of those artists that you either loved or hated. I loved his follow up albums; that voice is unmistakable!
Holding on to you got me through such a tough time in my life. Thank you Terence!
I always loved Wishing Well when it used to come on the radio. Still a bop.
I was just listening to his debut album every track was a masterpiece. "Lets Go Foward " should have been released certified hit imo. Truly talented brother.
I have been waiting for you to feature Terrence for a very long time, finally, thanks
I can't wait for your channel to get the full recognition it deserves! your reporting is next level!!!
Wow, thank you! 🥰
No lies here😉👏👏
I loved his music and was grateful he had a style of his own. I kept his first cd throughout my teens well into my 40's and then downloaded it on a playlist. I still listen to him today.
Introducing the Hardline came out when I was a 4th grader. I still bump it today ❤️
This guy went through a lot who am I to judge
I’m happy that finally he found someone that he could love and settle down with
Life is like that and no one should judge another’s journey
Still sign your name across my heart for me was my favourite
Wonder if his story has anything to do with the same reason Prince changed his name. These record companies literally own the entire artist
Wow yes! My mama used to PLAY 🔥Sign Your Name - clicked as soon as I saw this video ✨
Wildcard is a GREAT album. Highly recommended from a hardcore Funk fan🤘
❤️ sign your name ❤️ is one of my favorite songs I have on my Spotify list right now 💯💯 i’ve always been a fan of his first album was a good one ☝️
I got his 1st album on cassette. Sat in my car at a McDonald's blasting it after work. I wasn't going home until I listened to it all by myself. Wishing Well and I had people asking who's that. So good.
I wore out his first album. I have it on cassette. It doesn't play properly now. Loved his voice and do care what color he is. Amazing singer.
Don't sleep on Symphony or Damn, the whole album is killing. Let Her Down Easy and Seasons are beautiful slow jams. Do You Love Me Like You Say You Do and Baby Let Me Share My Love are upbeat nasty funk, and Castillian Blue is moody, heavy, soulful rock. She Kissed Me is the pop hit. Might be his best album from beginning to end.
He killed it on that release! Truly underrated.
Don't forget Delicate
Preach! My thoughts exactly. Brilliant masterpiece. So sad it was criminally underrated, but I guess his ego driven attitude just didnt help....I hope he's doing better these days.
Fantastic album!
1000% agree
So happy to hear you are doing well 🥰
SIS THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!! 🤗🙏🏿 I was in love with Terence from that first album😍😍😍Always wanted to know what really happened with him. Glad he was able to heal and ecstatic that he’s still making music. The music industry ain’t easy especially when your fame comes faster than you can process it, and you’re young to boot. I appreciate this video immensely.
Introducing The Hardline is a great album - He burned too hot, way too fast. Glad to hear he's grounded in Italy now.
How brave to completely reinvent yourself and change your entire identity. Still love you dude.
That really is not anything special.Pop artists have been reinventing themselves and music before, during, and after d'arby. That is nothing new.
It was TTD wanting to get away from contracts and corporate business side of things …& to have more control over his work. I know TTD and have some history with him.
I saw this brother in concert in Milwaukee, WI At the Eagles Ballroom. And I was front and center. He was EVERYTHING THAT NIGHT! I was on cloud 9. I just knew he was going to blow up. And then. SILENCE. Always wondered what happen.

This man had all the gifts...Great voice, great looks, just got too arrogant for his own good and his career suffered for it.
His second album was full of hits too.. you just had to be a real fan.
I think you guys should do an episode on the band Living Colour. They really broke barriers in Hard Rock music.
Yes! I was just listening to the cult of personality song in my car jammin out - the song is still so true today!
Like I said, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music was still a predominantly white male dominated genre back in the late 80's and Living Colour really broke the color barrier when they arrived on the scene. And also, Vernon Reid is one awesome guitar player.
Great artist had a lot of potential. Hope to hear from him
He has an amazing singing voice , his debut album was a great collection of well written songs .

He was a unique looking guy.
The. Shep remixes of Dance lil sister and Wishing well with the 808 machine are incredible .
He’s a TRUE artist!
One of my favorite artist. I need to check out his other albums under his current name.
Holding On To You, London 1995, is the penultimate performance of my favorite song. I listen to it every night...
This brother was right behind Micheal and Prince. I remember hearing a song (I can't recall the song's title) on his album where he sang acappella, a sort of hymn...I was floored. Another great singer named "Seal" reminds me of him as far as vocally.
Seal is definitely good, but he has about 5% of TTD's talent.
I forgot all about this dude till I seen the video.
