- In this weeks tutorial I'll be building a miniature billboard as some wargaming terrain. The billboard is a simple construction, with plenty of details added to really bring it to life. I'll cover all the steps to build this, and show a few materials I haven't used before, but as you'll see in the video most of these are optional, with plenty of options for alternatives. You can really take this build from simple to very detailed in a short amount of time, but even as a simple build with few details, it really does look fantastic. This is perfect for a range of game settings, including Walking Dead, Bolt Action, Warhammer, or most modern or sci fi settings. I was lucky enough to receive some great basing materials and tools from @TheArmyPainter which I use throughout this video, many thanks to Adam and the team for helping support a small CZcams channel like mine, these products turned out great for this build. Also a big thanks to Leif at @DevsDice for all the help, and for providing the image used for this billboard today. You can check out his channel here:

Thanks everyone for watching this one, it was a really fun build and I was really grateful to Leif from Devs & Dice for contributing to this video and helping with channel improvements recently. Please make sure to check out his channel if you get a chane, he does some great work over there czcams.com/users/DevsDice . Cheers.
Having been a model railroader for decades I would suggest to anyone interested in learning more about using powered pastel chalks in their weathering techniques to look for some of the books on that subject. This has been a staple in the realm of model railroading since the 40s.
Thank you so much for the comment mate. I will absolutely be doing that. Cheers!
That billboard looks great. Thanks for sharing your build process with us.
Another great video from mr RFD
Thanks Nate. Looking forward to some more terrain from your channel too mate. Cheers!
Cheap hairbrushs are a great source of geass.
Great idea, thanks!
Great job! One thing you could have done to give it a more wear out look is cutting the image verticaly (4-5 slides) and add them one by one, leaving one of them hanging half way down to give the impresion like is pilling off.
Great idea! I'll definitely do that on the next one, I could even have another older poster showing through underneath... Thanks so much for the comment mate, really appreciated.
Somebody was partying and left their peels up there on that billboard scaffold.
nice job .a good tip for setting pigments is hairspray its one of the few times in life where cheaper is better the cheap nasty value hairspray has more glue in it then the fancy stuff.
Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to try that. Cheers.
SUPER UNDER RATED CHANNEL!! A SERIOUS DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH...
Thanks so much! Really glad you're enjoying it!
Terrible image on the billboard but a fantastic build Shawn! Very nice man! 🤘
Thanks for all you help Leif. It was great fun. The image on the billboard is what really makes this build so fantastic I think! Cheers mate.
Thought that guy looked familiar... he haunts my nightmares!!
@@GMAtank Haha! I am so sorry! :D
At first glance it thought it was the " I'll buy that for a dollar" guy.
Good idea. I've been wanting to race past a Weyland-Yutani sign for some time in my arena Motor Gear Park.
What an awesome idea for a sign! "The Company" has it's hands in everything.
@@RFDHobby I'd also like to do OCP and Buy n Large, because who doesn't want Robocop and Wall-E fighting the Xenomorphs somewhere together?
@@angrytheclown801 oh man, as soon as you got some of this up and running in your game, shoot me an email with a pic, I'd love to see it!
@@RFDHobby Will do man. That and my (DON'T) Stop traffic boulder.
This is just a comment that’s to let you know this is a great video and to boost your video.
Thanks so much for the comment mate. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you like the video too. Cheers man.
Billboards are pretty simple, but all the little details really add to the picture!
yeah, the thing with billboards is that the back can have more details than the front. Which I think is the case here, because I really like the back of this one :)
Perfect timing. I accidentally bought an empty mini box on ebay, and was thinking I could save face by making some billboards
Oh man. Billboards sound like the perfect way forward then. Thanks for watching, and for your comment. All the best.
Oh man... that sucks haha
This would be perfect for FWW!
This looks really nice and realistic! The dead trees, the grasses give it that abandoned look. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks John. I agree, adding the extra details around the billboard really helped to make this one look a lot better. I appreciate the comment mate.
Excellent work
@@FacilityD20 Thank you mate.
Very nice little build. You have an excellent eye when it comes to the small details that sell a build. Bravo.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate that! Cheers.
Dude awesome build I’m totally happy to see this style of billboard great job my friend
Thanks, yeah I was really happy with this one too. Cheers for the comment.
Very well done for sure.
Awesome job, at that scale, the bullet holes are more like howitzer hits! lol
haha, that's true. Sometimes you have to exaggerate a few details to make them noticeable at this scale. Thanks for the comment mate.
@@RFDHobby Welcome, I used this video and made a couple of miniature billboards for a gift I am making someone, thanks for the inspiration.
its all in the details.
Nice video. Keep them flowing. Cheers
Thanks. Will do. I appreciate the comment.
2:34 To help with the balsa from worping use a wood sealer. Just my 2 Coppers.
Oh thanks so much! I hadn't thought of that, I'm sure that will come in handy. Thanks for the comment Janet, I appreciate the tip! Cheers.
Loved this one mate top work.
Thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Outstanding video brother
Thank you. This was a fun build. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very well done, going to take a few notes for my own channel
@@FacilityD20 thanks. I'll head on over and check out your channel. Happy to help in anyway I can mate.
Creative and awesome job, congrats!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate the comment Phil. Glad you liked it.
Great build. I'm definitely going to build a version of this: perhaps a vertical board to go on a building as well. Thanks so much for the great idea.
Thank you. I have plans for another one for the side of my recent big building I did a few weeks ago. Should look great on a building, and really easy to mount. Good luck with your build mate.
Great build 😃👍🏼 I’m definitely gonna give this a go on my next battle board. This video came just as I started planning a broken road bridge, so will look perfect on the side of the road. 😃👍🏼 Thanks for the inspiration and cool tips.
No problem at all. Thanks so much for the comment mate. Good luck with your build!
Nice job! I saw recently on another channel a tip about using glue stick in certain situations and it occurred to me that glue stick might be the perfect thing for attaching the image to the foam board backer. less risk of warping or of the paper cladding of the foam board from coming off as a result of using a "wet" glue.
Thanks, and you're absolutely right, a glue stick would probably be perfect. Getting the paper off here for the weathering and wear was almost impossible, although not so much an issue as I really didn't want to destroy Leifs cool picture too much. Cheers for the comment!
Subscribed!!
Thanks Jon!
very effective, might have to give it a go :D
Thanks for watching and for the comment! Glad you liked it.
Go for it.
Looks a awesome! I'd love to do one that's got a chunk blown out of one of the corners.
Thank you, and that's a great idea! I think you could even do that after it's finished and still get away with it. Cheers for the comment mate.
Awesome build, but you definitely made some work for yourself with the strips on the back. You should have put the strips across first and then stuck the vertical beams to that - far fewer cuts and you could have still staggered them for the right effect!
Thanks mate. I hear you on the strips on the back of the billboard here, it honestly wasn't on my list of things when I started the build, but it really did need something for the back in the end. I don't mind though, it's fairly common for me to find the hard way first. :) Really appreciate your comment. Cheers.
@@RFDHobby It looks good - that's what counts. Next time you can just do it quicker. Well done again!
@@Godonstilts Thanks very much again. I have a lot of fun making this stuff, so taking the long way around is not a big problem. I'm glad you liked it.
Great build but I'm not sure what kind of board you are using for the billboard and the base. Could you give me a part # and/or put a link to where it can be bought?
Thank you, Pete.
Hi Pete, for this I'm using standard 6mm foamboard. I purchase this in Australia, usually in Officeworks or Spotlight, although I believe you can also purchase it online. It is just a xps plastic foam core, with a paper (or sometimes plastic I hear), covering over both sides. In some projects I like to take the paper off the outer surface and work with just the foam, but with this project it wasn't necessary. I hope this helps mate, let me know if you have any more questions at all. Cheers.
cooooooooooooooool
You never gave dimensions of frame: is it 15cm x 10cm?
Hi there, you can really make this to any size, but the actual dimensions for this billboard were 160mm x 105mm. I hope this helps. Thanks.
hey man abolutely LOVED this video. really nailed every part brotha. quick question, do you have any tips on starting a hobby youtube channel? cant wait for a new video
Thanks mate. This was a fun one to build, nice and quick, but looks really good. Advice for starting a channel is going to vary wildly between people, and a lot depends on your resources and experience filming stuff. I have no experience and I am currently out of work, (the family is surviving off of one income atm), so throwing money at this is not an option, so my advice is going to be fairly limited sorry. I still film on an old Samsung phone, and use lamps to light my stuff, but my point here is, it gets the job done, and if you like what you're doing, it is fun no matter what happens with your channel. So my advice is to just start recording what you're making, and make things you want to have around you. Try not to let technical limitations, or the theory of it all stop you from doing it. Just set a goal to improve and learn with each video, and get started. Build a few videos on your channel, and improve as you go, you will soon start to see what's most important to you as far as what you need to work on to make better videos. I'm not sure if this is very helpful, but I don't feel like a very good authority on how to make a successful youtube channel sorry mate. I just do the best I can with what I've got, and hope I'll be able to get some decent equipment down the track to make more watchable stuff. But I still love doing it without fancy gear for now, and learning to work around that is part of the fun for me :) . Thanks for your comment and question.
@@RFDHobby wow thanks for the response! really inspiring, and great advice. ill give it a go! i hope you can succeed on this platform , you're helping a lot of people. thank you!
@@UNDAMedia No problem at all. Remember to let me know when you get your channel setup and your first videos out so I can come and check it out. All the best mate.
@@RFDHobby that would be awesome! Much love
@@RFDHobby hey mate, i just set up an instagram for updates and pics of my work, chuck it a follow at @trashbashhobby and ill be sure to notify you when i drop my first video. thanks for all the support :)
what is the music used in this video?
Hey William, a friend of mine records this music, he's providing the music for the channel at the moment (bless him). There's some new tracks of his in my latest video (DIY battlemats) too. He's amazingly talented. Cheers.
Was this for a 28mm table?
Yeah it was, although it's easy enough to change the dimensions and build to suit a different scale.
Great video mate! Could easily make these modular with maybe weathering the photo off of the frame and attaching it to chipboard. Should be nice and stiff then and could stick in place without glue. Then you could make multiple different photos and swap em out to suite your needs!
Absolutely, the billboard part of this is really simple to do, so attaching it to the uprights with magnets could also work. Thanks for the comment mate.
