Miniature Wasteland Scatter Terrain for Wargaming or Tabletop Games.

- This tutorial video shows how to make some simple hills and cliffs to be used for wargaming terrain or tabletop games. I made these as wasteland or desert terrain pieces, but as you will see in the video, you can easily change a few simple colors or details to make these fit whatever table setting you're using for your wargames.
I use a very simple and cheap hotwire foam cutter purchased from Amazon to cut the foam to create the cliffs, and fill out some of the volume of the hills. You could also create a very similar effect for these with a knife if required. Tin foil works great to also fill out some of the bulk of the hills, which reduces drying time for the homemade sculptamold I use for the final shape.
The homemade scultpamold is simple blended tissue paper mixed with plaster of paris. The mix is roughly 50/50, and then mixed with water to a pasty mix. Once dried you can then base with a black paint/PVA glue/Water mix to coat the plaster entirely, to prevent any white showing through, and finally painting with a base coat to somewhat match your final color for your hills.
For the wasteland look on these hills, I use a mix of playground sand, and Brown Battleground mix from @TheArmyPainter to get a really cool final texture. This is mixed with a small amount of dry pigment to adjust the color of the sand to the required color. I then add some larger rocks to each terrain piece, as well as an assortment of grass tufts to increase the level of detail.
The final details are some dead trees, and broken branches and twigs scattered over the terrain to really bring these wasteland wargaming terrain pieces home.

i guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Huxley Ian instablaster =)
@Dariel Hayes Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Dariel Hayes it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Huxley Ian no problem :D
Hah, I only just aquired a wire cutter, much like the one in the video. Odd coincidence, but sure made me pay attention to the wire action! Seems much simpler than getting the same textures with a knife, for sure.
It's not a bad cutter, it's certainly more efficient than using a knife, and it has it's own sort of texture about it which isn't terrible as well. It's definitely handy to have around. Thanks mate.
I love when you find basing materials you can just glue on and not paint. Nothing paints as well as Mother Nature herself! :D great video Shawn!
Thanks Mike. I agree, it was so much easier being able to work with materials that are essentially ready to go out of the box...or the ground as it were. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, really appreciate it.
Always loved the old GW books stated to when you used real rocks to paint them so they looked realistic .
Good evening Modelcomrade. The Hangar an this Terrainbuild is exelent work. I hope you have a good start in the New Week🤗
Thanks Christian, you too mate. I appreciate the comment.
Love how all the little additions brings it together and makes it come to 'life'.
Thank you. You never really know which detail is the one that is going to save it sometimes. These were a pleasant surprise at the end. Thanks for your comment mate.
The terrain looks incredible! I can see it is easy to do and gives very realistic results. Thanks for sharing this.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and commenting mate. I have a few more in this series planned in the coming weeks.
You uploaded this video 2 weeks after I had gotten into Fallout Wasteland Warfare and one week after I had subscribed! Thank you!
Awesome. I've seen some of the Fallout Wasteland stuff and it looks incredible. Glad the timing for this worked out. I have a few more videos planned in this theme, so hopefully they're also helpful.
Nice to have you back Shawn, lovely build!
Thanks. It's great to be back into making stuff for the channel. Thank you for the comment!
That home made sculpting mix looks great mate, good build... Those Damn bugs!.
Thanks Nate. That's my shed in summertime...full of bugs and spiders haha.
Beautiful work, and I have to give you a big thankyou for your advice about Langridge pigments. They have a huge range of colours and are manufactured locally. Being pro quality pigments, they list their colours according to the Colour Index International system (for example, raw umber PBr7), which is great for mixing your own combinations and getting predictable results, or matching with different brands and mediums (eg: Liquitex ink raw umber says PBr7 in the fine print on the label). Citadel Paints will leave you guessing what's in Orc Dung Brown or whatever.
No worries at all Damien, and thank you. I've only recently found these at my local art store myself, and I'm so much happier with these over the more miniature targeted pigments out there. Glad you enjoyed the video mate and thank you for your comment.
Subscribed for the tumbleweed effect. I love elegant little scenery tricks like that!
Thank you for the sub mate. Glad you found something in there you liked. I hope you find the rest of the videos interesting as well. Cheers.
These pieces look really good.
Have you ever considered making your own pigments? Simply grind up chalk pastels in a small grinder. Chalk pastels are incredibly cheap and you can buy sets that are all natural colours, browns and tans etc. By mixing you can make any colour you want.
Thank you. I have considered making some pigments, and I've even bought a couple of the chalk pastels for this purpose, I haven't got to try that out yet. Gives a greater range of colors for way cheaper. Although the Landridge pigments are great value if you're looking for off the shelf pigments (at least the series 1 pigments are really cheap, above series 1 and I'm definitely trying to make my own pigments). Thanks for the comment mate.
Great tutorial. Getting into Gaslands and this is what I need. Thanks
Thanks mate. Glad you found it helpful!
Nice one Shawn! I was a bit uncertain until you started adding all of the small bits and stuff which really broke it up in a nice way! Good one mate! 🤘
Thanks Leif. Yeah, sometimes you have to just keep pushing through to the end for it all to come together as you imagined. Never give up. :)
Fantastic build! Its all good stuff but the pigment and sand idea is particularly brilliant. Cheers!
Thanks mate. Yeah it saves a bunch of time down the track when you don't have to try to paint or cover up the natural sand color. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the comment.
Your content just gets better and better, great video
Thanks Greg. Really appreciate the comment mate.
Nice! I need some scatter terrain for my Shantytown set :p
Glad I could help. Thanks for the comment mate.
Love it! Re. sculptamold, I mixed my own using junk mail and plaster, bit chonkier than the regular stuff but it works out great. Gotta get me some of those pigments, I really like how they turned out! Re. Sand, construction sand might come in cheaper and has a nice variety of grit (last time I bought it, it was around 1 euro something for a 10kg bag, but that was a while ago - 10kg is a lot of sand!)
Thanks. Yeah this stuff I made up works great, and those pigments are really handy for the sand, as you can see in the video, it takes very little to get the desired effect. Thanks mate.
Awesome and so easy too!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@RFDHobby no problem!
Great looking scatter pieces, thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you for watching and commenting mate. Glad you enjoyed it.
He got that hot cheeto sand
mmm cheetos
Looks great.
Thanks Alex.
These look great! I'm actually just starting Mars like waste land terrain for a Kill Team board and this video was perfect, thank you!
Awesome idea. Love the mars look too. Thank you.
On your sculptor mold try adding good quality pva in the mix just gonna say it works a little better
oh that sounds like an interesting idea. I'll try that on the next project and see how it goes. I've been thinking of incorporating more scupltamold on some of my smaller projects to see if I can add something different there, so it shouldn't be too long before I can try this. Thanks again John. Sounds like you're building a bit of terrain yourself mate?
Bunnings currently has good xps foam.
Cheers mate.
This works really well, could you do some desert scenery, have subscribed, all the best Garry
Thanks Garry, I'll see what else I can do. I appreciate the sub and comment mate. Cheers.
Looks like your "Outback" cliffs at sunset/rise.
It's not far off an outback colour scheme. Thanks for watching!
@@RFDHobby yeah very reminiscent of the Pilbara
Yeasssssss.
Wastelands
Thanks Joshua. The wasteland stuff has so many possibilities. I'm really happy with these. Cheers for the comment mate.
Anyone else notice the bug crawling on the table?
Haha, I did during editing, but I think you're the first person to point it out. There's nearly always an insect showing up in these videos though, summer in Australia...
Quick question.. Where are getting your foam from? I to live Oz. Geelong
Hi James, I got this stuff from Bunnings here in QLD. It's usually in the trade section with all the timber, or amongst the other insulation products. The brand is Knauf Insulation - Multi-Use Foam Board in case you have to ask for it. Hope this helps out mate.
@@RFDHobby Just not as good selection down around Melbourne.
@@jamesgremer9698 last time I checked up here they didn't have any of it in stock either, but I'm going to ask the special orders desk next time I'm in there, I suspect there might be a thinner variety available. I can email you a photo of the brand and product details if you want to take it in to them if you decide to try and order it.
Hi, what were the name/brand of the pigments you used?
For this I used Langridge pigments. They are really good value and work fantastic. I just checked out the range on the website and ordered through my local art supply store. Prices vary depending on the color, but I found most were reasonably cheap. Let me know if I can help further. Cheers.
@@RFDHobby Thanks, I'll look them up and see if I can source them here
Any chance you take orders to sell terrain you make?? :)
I haven't done so in the past, and it might be a while until I have anything to sell, but you can certainly let me know if you see something I do in a future video that you like
