Gilgamesh were the band of Alan Gowen, who sadly died of leukemia in 1981 at the age of 33. They were very closely associated with National Health (one of the bands of Dave Stewart); they occasionally gave concerts as an 8-piece band with two drummers, two bass players, two guitar players and two keyboarders. After the death of Alan Gowen National Health published the album "D.S. Al Coda" with compositions of Gowen and a photo of him in his leukemia stage (he is wearing a woolen cap in that photo to cover his baldness) as album cover; Stewart filled in on keyboards for Gowen. The second album of Gilgamesh "Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into" is in our opinion even better.
Gowen was an important member of the Canterbury scene; he played in the bands Gilgamesh and Soft Heap (and with National Health in that double band billing). The name "Soft Heap" (please don't ask me what that band name reminds me of) is an allusion to Soft Machine; the "Heap" in the name is formed from the first letters of the first names of their members Hugh Hopper on bass, Elton Dean on sax (these two were also members of Soft Machine), Alan Gowen on keyboards and Pip Pyle on drums. They made one self-titled studio album in 1979 and 3 live albums: "Rogue Element" in 1978, "A Veritable Centaur" in 1995 and "Al Dente" in 2008. For the 1978 "Rogue Element" album Pip Pyle was not available though because he had other commitments; he was replaced by Dave Sheenon that album. To keep up with the band name tradition they named themselves "Soft Head" then with the "D" for "Dave" replacing the "P" for "Pip". He also released "Two Rainbows Daily" together with Hugh Hopper in 1980 and "Before a Word Is Said" with Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair and Trevor Tomkins (the drummer on the second Gilgamesh album) in 1982 (recorded shortly before and released shortly after his death).

One of Alan Gowen's amazing compositions, "Hell's Bells", is featured as an opening track on Bill Bruford's "One of a Kind" album which features Dave Stewart, Allan Holdsworth and Jeff Berlin. Gowen plays beautifully on National Health''s self-titled debut album as well. As someone else mentioned, National Health, after Gowen's passing, recorded an album of Alan Gowen compositions called D.S. Al Coda. All of these contain fantastic record of Alan Gowen's talent as a player and/or composer.

Hi JP. Dave from London, just back from A Trip To The Fair (in my local park). Really loving when this settles into a Santana like guitar jam. Some excellent piano flourishes in there too. Never heard of this band, but this is what I love about your channel - introducing me to music old and new that I don't know.
P.S. my song ref A Trip To The Fair is by Renaissance - there's a Canterbury connection as I saw them live with Caravan back in the 70s.

There's also a vinyl reissue of Gilgamesh on the french label Klimt Records since September last year.

So glad you love this, Justin :D that final section is indeed sublime. The second Gilgamesh album "Another Fine Tune You've Got Me Into" is probably my favourite fusion album ever. Ethereal stuff full of that sweet rhodes. Gowen was a genius (R.I.P.)

Oooh, now we're in the deep end of the Canterbury wading pool. My only issues with this kind of stuff is I always feel like I'm listening to a college music major presenting his thesis composition. Still, there's no denying the talent involved. RIP Alan Gowen.

Note of interest: Alan Gowen was in a rehearsing band that consisted of himself, Allan Holdsworth, and Jamie Muir. I don't believe they ever recorded. I would love to hear that! Alan also worked with members of Soft Machine as well as Henry Cow.

You should continue with The Rotters Club which you started about a year ago. Take the rest of the album in two parts: side one what's left of it and then side two. For me it's the best album of the Canterbury scene.

  • @blackcatcentralmusic
    @blackcatcentralmusic Před 2 lety +1

Second tier of Canterbury bands. I love it. You can hear Gowen's jazz influences. His presence is great on the first National Health album where both he and Dave Stewart play keyboards. A powerful combination. You can also hear a slight Zappa influence.
There is a second Gilgamesh album with a different lineup, "Another Fine Tune You've Gotten Me Into". Hugh Hopper on bass and Phil Lee on guitar. I prefer the debut.
Gowen sadly passed away in 1981 but completed a good album, "Before a Word is Said" with Richard Sinclair, Phil Miller, and Trevor Tompkins.
National Health's third album, "D.C. al Coda", is a tribute to Gowen with the band recording his compositions.
Gowen's compositions are more fluid and lend themselves to improvisation where Dave Stewart is more structured.

Onya JP ( ockerism from the land down under ) !
Gotta love the way you embrace the more obscure and lesser known material , esp Canterbury scene stuff .
I have one for you that I have put up before :
    Band : Audience
Track : The House on the Hill ( title track )
Album : The House on the Hill ( 1971 )
Why ? Great rhythm section , amazing woodwinds , no electric guitar ( only classical miked up ), no keyboards ( except for guests occasionally ) , but with a huge sound , with captivating vocals .
Drummer went on to big Brit 80s band Hot Chocolate , and band leader , Howard Werth ( voc and classical guitar ) auditioned for and got the gig to replace Morrison in the doors before Manzarek decided to wind the band up .
    Described as eclectic/art rock .
Atmospheric , theatrical prog with a surprisingly big sound for such a quartet .
I guess I’ll keep putting them up until we have an audience with Audience 🤣
    Love your work JP 👍

I admire Gilgamesh mo9re than I love them. The musicianship is unmistakable but I still need a great tune or a series of riffs to keep me interested and those offered by this band are just not up to the best of National Health, Hatfield and the North or Egg. (I realise that this opinion will have me drummed out of the Canterbury Appreciation Society but at least the drumming will be in 17/8!)
