I wonder if it there was a company/ driving school logo on the bonnet for 15 years that didn't come off smooth
Oh that's a good thought
Awesome! I've always loved the idea of the cheapest possible independent mobility.
I don't think you'll find much for cheaper!
I paid £280 for my Peugeot 206, very tidy. With 11 months MOT zero advisories and I spent £140 on a new timing belt water pump as soon as I bought it - love my car
That's pretty good going. 206s were good old things
What a little beastie!
Far better than a 106 if you ask me. I’ve driven both; 90’s Peugeot boxes are fun, but horribly unreliable now.
Those first model BMW Mini’s are the best ones too, the model after this is flawed beyond belief. My brother has a Cooper S 04’ model, they’re actually great cars.
I think you’ll fall in love with this in time Lawrie. Not only that, but this shape with those wheels will be collectors pieces in the future. They’re overlooked now, but so was the original Mini. I hope you keep it and look after it.
It’s not a heritage car right NOW. Although I reckon it will be, in about 10 years or more.
Oh I'd take the 106 every day of the week!
I feel these wheels may be a bit too scuffed to be desirable!
@@lmm scuffed wheels can be beautified, it’s not impossible. But I used to have a 205, I can honestly say now that I’d rather have the Mini. Those Peugeot boxes are fun, but when they go wrong, it’s never one fault, they absolutely die.
Don't knock a MINI. They do at least have something about them and they do drive quite well. I've had quite a few and enjoyed them all. Looks like a great buy for very little money, looking forward to seeing more of it!
I'm very pleased with it so far!
i owned one of these years ago and it was an experience to say the least. you'll need a big ol socket to change the oil filter and a special belt adjustment tool to touch the alternator just a heads up. good luck boys.
Oh really? Oh joy
Very cool little car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! For the money, it's great!
Love your car content, you always cater for real people 👌👍
Thank you very much!
What a wonderful bargain! I hope it doesn't fall apart on you!
Me too!
I can relate to the sentiment of a car growing on you after having spend very little on it.
I've recently bought a old Audi A6 (C5) for 300€, having a 2.5TDI (terrible reputation, but it's one of the later engines with hardened camshafts etc.) and Tiptronic (my first ever Automatic), I never found that model very interesting before, but it drives remarkably well.
As for the Mini, I had a (school) internship at a BMW Dealers workshop around the time those came up, iirc the common issues were:
Power Steering (the early models had a blower on them to cool them, a lot of people tought it's broken due to the noise it makes... but also didn't think it's broken when it was),
Gearboxes, Wheelbearings and Driveshafts. I suppose you could mention electronical issues, but they were pretty common for many cars of this period (esp. on the ugly 7 series of that time).
IIRC the Clutch was a bit underdimensioned, causing it to wear down faster than usual.
It's a bit difficult on modern day internet to mention "common problems" with cars, because usually someone will act like I just insulted their mother, followed with a pararaph about their -mother- car not having those issues. Overall they were more reliable than you'd expect from the interior quality impression, but if something goes wrong you'll get to enjoy the "repairfriendlyness" of modern cars. AFAIK the parts were priced very high for a car in this class, at least here in germany, but there should be plenty of non-OEM options.
@MadIIMike I had a C5 A6, model year 2000, and I loved it! I owned it from the Summer of 2006 to the Summer of 2009. Mine was Racing Green Pearl Effect, and it had the 4.2 V8. Such a fun car :)
Oh thanks for the pointers - hopefully it'll just keep working!
We need a "Lemons Car" series in the UK. You would get the "£500 my arse " award!
That's basically our LMMons!
@@lmm Are you taking it to the States??!!!
Oh edit..... the LLMONS ok.
RIP me, died laffin. Hearing that the gearbox was "made out of chocolate" -- I love British humor, but that's one I'd not heard before -- just about did it, but not like that!
@@laserhawk64 glad it tickled you!
For what you spent on the car and the enjoyment you are getting out of driving it... You scored big time!
I have a Toyota pickup that I've had some 30 plus years as a daily and I can't throw stones at it. It's done everything I have asked of it over the years.
This appears to be that. Does what it says on the tin!
Definitely got a bargain there. I was looking earlier in the year at some mini's in the Chelmsford area as my car had failed it's MOT. One of them was priced at £3k and from the sound of it would of needed a new engine almost immediately.
I think they are fun cars but I don't regret going what turned out to be the cheeper option and had the chassis and body of my escort welded back together.
For the money, I can't complain!
Not to forget that a non glossy bonnet won't glare too much if you're facing the sun. Also with there being loads of these around, spares should be easy to obtain too.
That is part of the idea, should be able to keep it on the road for a bit!
YESS! A Mini! Let's go!
It's not too bad!
@@lmm I have a Y (01) plate Mini One and it puts a huge smile on my face! Enjoy your new car!
Took my driving test in an 03 mini exactly the same colour and spec. Lots of room for tall chaps like myself 6.7 and agree the gearbox is pants but I think its the shifter more than the gearbox itself. Congrats on buying something that isn't 💩. 😁✌
It had to happen eventually!
You've got the big wheel option on that, which looks great but gives that rock hard ride, mines got the less good looking little wheels with tall tyres so it is much softer, but still handles the same on a B road
Ah! That makes sense. Obviously I'm all about the looks 😂
I know what you mean by the bumpiness. My daughter's mini on runflats rattles like a skip wagon on the roads round here. Goes round corners well though 😀
It's not the smoothest ride!
Pretty sure that was the biggest bombshell on this channel yet. Not only did Lawrie buy a cheap car that wasn't falling apart, it also converted him from a BMW & Mini hater into an outspoken fan.
How much crazier can things get after this? :)
I know! I'm scared too!
I certainly agree with you on Beamer's Mini's! I'm very much prepared for an "it's gone wrong" video when something on it fails - because that just happens with your vehicles doesn't it - but seeing you having bought something that's maybe actually sort of good is a nice change!
It certainly is!
As an owner of a 13 plate Mini, the most common thing you will need to replace is the windscreen, due to the curved shape of the wondscreen they get fractured cracks more often, mine must have had at least 6 new windscreens fitted to it over the 9 years I've had it
Really? Damn!
@@lmm Unfortunately true, other than that though other than having to replace a thermostat housing earlier this year it's been the best car I've ever had, to the point of where I'll run it until it becomes a cost hinderance vs a newer car
Congratulations Lawrie on buying a good car. If I was you I would get the front brakes sorted and enjoy driving a fully working car.
They'll get done before too long!
Yessss before I clicked on the video I said to myself wouldn't it be funny if it was a mini. They are such great cars.
I'm enjoying it so far
The law of averages said you'd get a good car eventually! Hope you enjoy it & have many adventures!
Had to happen eventually!
Those minis are brilliant, helped spanner on one for a 12 hour endurance race at Anglesey, it only broke slightly but other than that was loads of fun.
I'm impressed so far!
I still find it hard to think of the new Mini as a classic, or even as just an old car, since I find it hard to think anything that's still in production in that kind of way. Ok, there are things like the Land Rover Defender, but the Series I & II were clearly different there, so were obviously Old. (I still think of it as the 'new Mini'.) There's one that lives down the end of our street that's an 02 plate, it's in immaculate condition, it's very hard to think of it as 20 years old
Yeah, I think the same!
Way to go Lawrie you did great on your purchase and it is hard to find cheap cars
It really is a huge problem at the moment
I bloomin' love my R50 Mini Cooper, its so much fun to drive, and Ive just checked and apparently its ULEZ safe (which I hadn't realised). Mines done 135,000 miles and the interior is still good too
I'm very pleasantly surprised with it!
I bought a 2007 copper for £350 last year with mot replaced the brakes drove it around for 4-5months (actually enjoyed it which I’ve never admitted) saved loads of money from daily driving my 350z or shogun it failed it’s mot on emissions and developed a misfire put it on eBay as spares and got nearly £650 for it and won a mk4 golf tdi on eBay for £608 which I’m still using and insanely fond of 🙂
That's pretty good going! Even last year the prices of cars weren't cheap!
If that car actually is healthy, i would be absolutely ecstatic having bought that for so cheap. Congratulations!
Time will tell I guess! Here's hoping!
I've not heard great things about the reliability of older higher mileage BMW Mini's, but they are supposed to be fantastic when they are working. Glad to see you are loving your new car :)
That's positive then!
@@lmm If things do break, are you planning on replacing with cheap wrecker parts, or do you like it enough that you might consider aftermarket parts when things wear out?
Since i am guessing there's probably quite a lot available for it.
Know what you mean about cheap cars being hard to find. I'm doing a banger rally in September (trying to raise money for my local hospice) and had to find a car for under £500 that would drive me to Portugal and back. A few years ago I'd have a huge choice. This year it took me 3 months of asking and searching to find something. Love the car I bought though. A £500 nissan almera. Has a few rattles and bodywork issues but I love it.
Oh well done finding something! It really is a challenge these days.
Bit of wet flatting and a few coats of clear lacquer might sort that bonnet out, or at least make it look less obvious.
Yes, it might look a bit better!
These little cars are quite surprising, I've had a couple of them, (my current one is a R56 JCW).
My 1st one was the same as yours, colour, year and spec.
Watch out for power steering pump issues, mine went up in smoke, took out the pump, wiring harness and battery.
Enjoy.
Frank
I hear they're not brilliant, neither are gearboxes
I think the last one I had that cheap was over 15 years ago, other than a couple that have come from friends or family. I think an mot with a few advisories is a bit more trustworthy than a clean one too, as you learnt with the TF...
Pretty much! It seems OK too!
Failed MOT just before my birthday this year 😔 cheaper than renting a car though!
I had a Bini - was an 2007 cooper, bored me senseless, not because it was bad, but it wasn’t awesome either, and the boot was useless, had to get my van out if I needed to move more than a pair of clean pants
It's not awesome, but certainly not bad. I'm quite enjoying trundling around in it
I paid £1600 for my BMW, and its 2 years older and 40,000 miles more. I've had it on a lift, looks great. So unless your wheel is about to fall off you've done good. If not common as muck.
That's not bad going
It's a slightly inflated in size mini designed by BMW. Did you know the wing mirrors are the same as on the Rover 25, 45 and 75 as BMW borrowed the shape when they owned Rover.
It was penned originally before it actually became BMW I believe.
I didn't know it borrowed the wing mirrors. Makes sense to share parts!
i would've thought that matt's starlet wouldn't need the crippling cost of premium as the later end of them (98 on) are E10 compliant. Mine's been plugging along happily on it this past while
Matt *is* running e10.
To explain how bad petrol has got.
@@lmm bad enough at 156.9 at my local...
Maybe it was parked near the beach a lot and the paint literally got "sanded " down, that's what happened to my dad.
Only on the bonnet though?
@@lmm if you park it with the front towards the beach I don't see why not
Had really old mini's and driven and early new shape with high mileage loved them both for different reasons. She was a bargain indeed at that money.
Thanks. Be well and stay safe.
It works - that's the main thing!
The way they hid the B pillar behind the glass grew on me throughout the video. For 250 I wouldn't even bother checking the oil
I cannot complain for the money
I'm kind of glad that you have a Mini- It is still a quintessentially British design, and even though they're extremely common (In the UK anyways) and the legacy of the car has been much-maligned, I'd still rather drive a Mini than any of the generic, cookie-cutter, massive, inefficient and boring crossovers that infest American roads. It reminds me a lot of my old car- I used to have a 2014 Kia Soul with a 6-speed manual transmission, and aside from some strange quirks, it's probably one of the best cars I've ever driven, and I sometimes wish I still kept it. I imagine the footprint is mostly the same between the two (the wheelbase is probably similar, the Soul is much taller though), and despite that both of these cars are considered "SUVs", even though they're really just slightly larger hatchbacks.
The mini isn't bad. It just had a hard act to follow. It's quite fun
@@lmm Indeed, it looks like it's become a bit of a mainstay on your channel now, and I'm glad for that.
Well done! Now, get a big LMM logo printed on Vinyl and wrap the bonnet in it. Advertising (so it comes off tax) and covers up the Brillo detailing.
We've thought that would be a good idea!
It's a great transport vehicle. No it doesn't have infinite vertical space of an open bed but it is protected from weather and casual theft AND has room the occasional extra passenger. Look into the suspension especially rear because weight can make handling very bad or dangerous. Lean on the fenders and see how the suspension reacts.
OK thanks for the info - I shall!
Rear seat deletes are surprisingly common in these!
I can imagine! Makes a good difference to capacity
I dunno. If thats around 2003, The paint and clear coat fading is normal. Mine did the exact same thing. Not sure why though. I do know that after about an hour of driving, the hood was incredibly hot. Was a fun little car too. Last owner used the wrong trans fluid on the CVT and cooked it. I bought it and didn't know untill it was serviced 6 months later. Real cold day and it would not go into reverse.
Is that so, that would explain the bonnet then
@@lmm Also, careful if it starts to get a power steering leak. Depending on the motor type. It will be between the motor and firewall of the car. Do yourself a favor and do a quick check. Those hoses and pumps aren't cheap. :( Have fun with your mini!
I'm surprised this thing is from the 2000s and isn't some rust bucket van or truck. Because the cheapest car I've seen was some rusty and dirty 1980s pickup for about $350 a couple of years back
1980s stuff is desirable now. Not going to find any of that cheap!
Hi Lawrie you really got a great deal regardless of the type of work needed!!! So Cool I Say from the USA!!!!
I think so!
My daily driver is an LDV convoy, and I think I've seen a total of 5 others driving along
Oh that's very cool
@@lmm I will get it to a meet up one day😅
Currently have a 2003 MG ZT-T which I bought for £550, it's comfortable and gets the job done. You should be thrown in jail for stealing that Mini £250! for a working car is crazy.
That's pretty good money for one. Cool cars!
Best priced car I got was In Feb 2016 was a v reg ford Ka still had 10 weeks mot left ran and drove fine I payed 60 quid ran it till mot was due then scrapped for 140
Back then, you could get cars for the hundred quid mark for something which just about works. Today, not anywhere near!
Not to get oddly specific, I apologize. I am an American actually traveling to the UK for the first time this year between Thu, Sep 22 and Tue, Sep 27. Any chance you guys will be doing an event or be around at Mid-Suffolk Railway sometime in there?
The MSLR gala is the first weekend of September sadly.
There will be an event on somewhere I'm sure
In the words of a friend from a night school class from the last millenium: "It drives like a bullet through cheese!"
😂 😂 I like that
Ah a Gen 1 BMW mini, Designed by Rover in 1998 when they where starting to slow down production of the Orginal Classic Mini in 2000 after 40 years and over 5million made. Sure i'm not a huge fan of these given i own the proper classic mini, but i prefer these to the refresh in 2008 with it's new grill and headlights lift with the bonnet and the anti Christ of the new Gen 3 in 2013.
I have never liked them - but it is now a small car. And drives pretty nice
My 18 year old son has one. I love it. It’s like a go-kart. His has an issue with standing water and stops firing on a couple of cylinders for a few minutes. If anyone has any answers to that it would be appreciated. 👍
Not a clue I'm afraid
My thinking... Pub this cheap.... the guy dumped the car before court where he would be banned from driving or it had been stolen/taken without permission and sold
I suppose that's a possible situation
To be honest, I thought you were going to pull a Top Gear at the beginning, and say "no, this is NOT what I've bought. THAT is what I've bought!" And then the camera would pan over to some rusted hulk that only Lawrie would love :D
That would have been a good idea 😂
Shame Matt's not around now, this genuinly feels like when the Trio meet's up with their cheep cars in Top Gear xD
There will be more adventures with new crew, so hopefully we'll get back to that

Prejudice in the markeplace creates bargains , being willing to risk unpopularity or ridicule is the right way to get a bargain , congrats .
True, but it still shouldn't have been this cheap!
@@lmm Yes i agree , it is super cheap compared to recent high prices , but i wonder if the prices are dropping again , maybe people are giving up on car ownership because it's just become too expensive on top of the other cost of living increases ?
Fuel? Last year I took the dennis to Kinloch Rannoch and 175 filled the tank.
Saturday i filled the same pump .....234 quid! The hobby just got frighteningly expensive 🙈🚒

@@Mrflash222006 thanks for the heads up!
All the new minis are bloated caricatures of an old tiny car which apart from when I got to drive Paddy Hopkirk's works Bathurst mini, are shocking things to drive.
I always thought that, but if you compare this to today's SUV's and crossovers, it's actually tiny!
TBF with the amount of cars etc you buy then your bound to luck out and buy a mint one eventually lol
Law of averages right?
They’re quite good cars to podder about in and drive well for enthusiasts, never really understood the hate as I’d say - as retro revivals go - they did a good job. Way better than the new beetle and I’d say I prefer them over the 500 too. I’ve always steered away from cheap ones thinking the gearbox would probably have two gears missing and the timing would be very close to eating itself though lol. I do get what you mean with the rarity thing though, I pointed and muttered quite an obvious “chuffing hell yeah” when I drove by a p reg mushy pea green 106 in my 106 the other week, which I think would get quite tiring if it was for minis.
Yeah, that's excatly it. Twenty years on, it is a small car.
I'm still waiting to find out what's wrong with it.
I like having something unusual, it just adds to my enjoyment having something that probably wouldn't be on the road if I wasn't driving it
my brother is getting 75mpg in a 3 pot diesel audi a2 with the rear seats out worst he got was 50mpg with railway track on the roof and a fuel leak
The A2 was very ahead of its time and does rather good mpg
Second hand cars have gone stupid prices I just spend months looking for summit, finally got a 09 plate 1.4 seat Ibiza sport for 1500 and that was only because it was a dealer we knew
Yeah it's mad - which makes getting this for 250 even better!
It needs new badges with relatively, maybe a how to ( try to) restore pain on the bonnet? At worst give it chalk paint.
Best part of it eing cheap is theres nothing wrong with just changing things , is it better quality and compatible? On it goes
It'll certainly feature for a bit. Maybe a black bonnet?
I guess in about 10years, Lawrie would have bought an Nissan Leaf
Maybe...
I don't like them either but you done great, if i was looking for a cheap run around would happy with it 😉
For the money, I can't complain
Very nice.
Thank you!
You got a bargain there Lawrie, the early Bini's are good fun but keep an eye on engine temps. The hoses and the heater matrix have been known to let go and much like the films the "Matrix" is not an easy thing to fix. 🤔👍
Oh thanks for the heads up
@@lmm We had a few of them on fleet as runabouts with the company I work for and I remember at least four of them went the same way. One of them when I was driving! Meaningful first checks done (Tic) Fuel, Water, Oil, Lights, Tyres. All good, 40 miles into my journey on the M6 the damned thing steamed up like a sauna. It didn't help it was November time and my visibility didn't even get past the windscreen and I'm talking the "INSIDE"😱 Squeaky Bum moment but as you can guess by me recounting this tale , all ended well. 👍

Congrats, you now drive a jumbo shrimp! Also, hate me ( :P ) -- $3.959 (the 9/10 cent is the gas tax that pays for road/bridge maintenance BTW) for 87 octane unleaded at the local place.
1.60 a *litre* in the UK a moment
@@lmm hence the tongue-in-cheek "hate me" -- a litre is a bit over a US Quart, and our dino juice is priced by the gallon. This is one place the names make the math a lil easier with our crazy crazy units -- four quarts to a gallon.
So six pounds forty for roughly the same quantity... exchange rate is a bit less unpleasant than it used to be, nicely -- in my travelin days it was about a buck eighty to a pound, now it's about a buck twenty-five for a quid. So where I used to just double everything in my mind, now I'd multiply by 1-1/2... or reduce by 2/3 going the other direction, hmmm.
So $4.27, rounding up 4/10 to the nearest whole cent because you do that weird VAT thing instead.
That's... that's not bad. That's basically super premium here or unleaded (lowest grade) somewhere moderately expensive nearby. I have a friend 30min away in an even tinier town, her gas is always stupid expensive there, I bet she pays about that much right now.
The problem with the mini is the BMW badge very expensive and complicated to maintain
It is all rather packed in there
early Bini's aren't too bad, the ultra really early Y reg ones are collectable now
