Arbitrary criminalisation of young foreign women
The European elections are on 9 June and Lisbon's women's prison is filling up. A young female election worker from Hamburg will not be able to start her service for democracy. Why? Because it is obvious that elementary human rights are currently being trampled underfoot in Portugal and the police and judiciary are arbitrarily confronting innocent young people with bizarre accusations that are only familiar from totalitarian states such as Russia. The young businesswoman from Germany, who supports Ukrainian refugees in her home country, among other things, was the victim of a particularly perfidious scam that was previously only known from unjust states. When the young lady asked at reception in a Lisbon hotel for a suitcase containing business documents left for her, she was asked to wait three minutes. Suddenly, several police officers appeared, arrested her and brought her before a magistrate. Although the young woman had never seen or touched the suitcase in question, they claimed that it contained cocaine and that she was the drug courier for a Brazilian drug network. Any attempt by the young lady to defend herself was harshly rebuffed by an overbearing judge. A five-month pre-trial detention was imposed in quick succession. She was told that she would serve at least eight years for her ‘crime’ and was eventually transferred to the women's detention centre in Lisbon. In prison, she met other young women who reported similar experiences.
All attempts by her relatives, her lawyer, the German embassy, petitions to the mayor of Hamburg, the German chancellor and the German president have so far failed to get her even a prison review date. The young woman has been in prison since 17 April, completely innocent and with health problems. Although the Supreme Court in Lisbon now has all the exonerating facts that would normally lead to her immediate release in a Western-style democratic state governed by the rule of law, exactly nothing is happening. Is Portugal not part of Europe, do its representatives no longer feel committed to the values and standards of a Western democracy based on the rule of law? How can it be that there is not even a prompt investigation into whether there is any truth to the allegations? For these reasons, young women in particular can only be warned against travelling to Portugal at the moment. After all, who would want to spend months or years in prison as a completely innocent victim of an arbitrary police force and justice system?
