- The Best Steam Train Show Of 2023! 5 Steam Locomotives Giving Plenty Of Smoke, Plenty Of Whistle & Bell & Passing Back And Forth With Different Themes! These are real, operating, coal burning steam locomotives on the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, West Virginia. I have the best seat in the house.
The steamers passed us back and forth 5 times with each trip being different than the last trip. First, you will see the steam locomotives reverse past us to line up for the event. The first trip was with as much smoke and noise as possible. That was awesome! You can barely see anything through the smoke. I thought I saw Greta through the smoke but she disappeared. Lol.
The locomotives then reverse past us again for another trip. This time they run by with a lot less smoke and they are quiet.
The 3rd trip is all whistles and no bells. The 4th pass is lite smoke and bells only. When the locomotives were returning I did an experiment with my camera. 35 seconds show the locomotives zoomed in by the computer since I filmed them vertical. I don't know if that was a good idea.
The 5th and final runby was the grand finale. Each steam locomotive could do what they wanted. This was a lot of fun to watch! A few of the steamers tried to do special whistle blasts. 4 of these engines are Shay locomotives. They are special geared locomotives designed for the logging industry. They are slow locomotives that can run on steep and curvy track. The 5th locomotive , #9 Moore-Keppel & Company is a Climax locomotive. They all burn coal. The Heisler steam engine #6 did not run on this day. They also have another Shay #6 and it did not run either. I have both of them in my videos. Which steam locomotive is your favorite?
We stayed in a small motel across the river from Cass. Our window and balcony had a perfect view of the train station and the trains. I filmed one train with a caboose from the balcony that you will see at the end. The cat and dog playing was filmed on September 21, 2023 and the dogs playing was filmed a couple days before that. Don't miss the long slide show that shows all of the steam locomotives in action!
Filmed Saturday, June 17, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Camera #2. Thanks for watching!

AWESOME VIDEO! But boy, despite how amazing those whistles sound, I'd need to wear earplugs for that!

Outstanding
JT, thank you for taking us to the Cass parade! Awesome as always!
Thanks for watching!
04:14 to 04:18 - the way the engineer controlled that whistle, making it slowly roll off to a fadeout......that was beyond spectacular!!
That was cool!
I missed the parade but went up the mountain 2 weeks later. It's a great ride for everyone, including Greta.
This is a really great video with the

My grandfather and three uncles were coal miners very tough men 💪
That's awesome😊
Well, ya just can't beat West Virginia coal, West Virginia steam. Good one, Señor Jaws. Get better. RT sends, Puebla, México...
Fantastic locomotive my friend! Wonderful video, greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷

Awesome steam! Beautiful place Jawtooth!👍
awesome video... your videos are always A+
Glad you like them!
Amazing!
Thanks!
And a musical playing of a steam whistle in the natural acoustics of the mountains or a canyon is definitely the best. I toured all the narrow gauge in CO years ago. I can still imagine the aroma of caol smoke. Nothing like it.
Love the sound from the valley
Great catches and excellent video jaw tooth
Good morning I enjoyed that video👍👍
Awesome , all five locomotives. Awesome video jaw tooth.
Great video, Brian. I hope that you are feeling better today. Please take care of yourself. Greetings from Virginia.😊
Loved the steam locomotives, Brian, also nice catch on the Chesapeake & Ohio caboose!
Glad you enjoyed it
The last engine being setup is steam cleaning the trees....lol....Robert. Awesome video. Great job Jaw Tooth.
According to Wikipedia #5 is the oldest operational Shay locomotive.
Awesome video with lots of whistle salute but wait there’s more 👍😎🚂🇺🇸👍
Love those steam whistles. They sound so much better than todays air horns.
I agree!😊
Wow I have not seen so many steam locomotives in one place at anytime, this was great
Great footage again 👏
Thanks again!
@JawTooth I saw some cool stuff on my Norfolk Southern Harrisburg line. Saw a UP and BNSF but on the union pacific the writing on the side was gone not sure if it caught fire or not.
Cool 😊
Wow! What a show! Ya suppose anybody had laundry to do when they got home??!! LOL
Fantastic video JT!
🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂💯👍🇺🇸
I know, right?
Those old logging Shays were cool 😎!🛤🚂
Fun video, man I could sit there all day listening to those beauties run. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed
Cool video Jaw !!!!))))
Love those Shay locomotives. Good video Brian
Yesterday I was at the NYMR steam gala (in northern England). They had 6 steamers running, 4 more at light steam (which will run today), a steam brake down crane lifting wagons, 2 vintage diesels, and the A4 Gresley came in off the main line.
Plus another 9 steamers under overhaul, some near completion.
Wow, I never knew they had that many steamers running! I need to update my passport
The forest in Shay and Heisler running .He's looked as if old rocknroll player concert . I can see very glad . Thank you very much !
Cool! Thanks for watching!
Get better soon JT! ❤
Wow! What a great video! There's just something about steam - can't get enough of it. I don't think I've ever seen the gear configuration that those loco have before. Great job JT! Hope you're getting over your cold. Stay healthy and safe!
Thanks for watching! I am slowly getting over it. This is the worst cold I ever had. I appreciate your support
Those Shay’s are amazing machines, thanks for all your effort.
You bet😊
Awsome
Thanks!
Magnificent video, steam always rules in my book ! 😊😎👌👍👍👍👍👍!
Drove over to Cass a few years ago to ride one of those locomotives to the top of the mountain. What a great experience. Going to do that again next summer hopefully.
Sounds great!
Ah, the smell of coal smoke and mournful whistles echoing off the hillsides. I bet Ed Dickens ( UP 4014) would enjoy a go at the throttle of one of these Shays
That valley has sone awesome echos!
When was growing up back in the 60s, we heard about “Choo choo trains”, but that was before my time .. they didn’t choo choo .. the steam engines were long gone.
However, the big factories and steel mills, used the same big whistles, heard mostly every hour and at all noon .. the rust belt factories all closed by the time I was a teenager.
Steam train are great I remember hearing those at six jersey central used go through no stop our area great part one thanks Brian
Glad you enjoyed it
Good morning jaw tooth
Good Video JT
🚂🌷🇮🇳🌷🌷
Bet sounds good when go through the big mountain 🏔️ just hear 🙉 like the Wabash cannonball
I need more like buttons
Also will you have calendars available?
JawTooth
Those steam engines are great to see
The whistle's sound awesome 👍
Live action folks
Oh for the days of steam
Black Sabbath Wizard on the horn would be amazing.
Hope you are feeling better. Nice video of tge parade of eng8nes. My brother would have lived this.
Nothing like the sound of a steam train! Operators have to be certified because the engine has the potential to be a 💣
Your right JT, that parade was so awesome, love hearing those old steam whistles. 👍🏼🤩🚂🚂🚂🚂 thanks JT.
Glad you enjoyed it!
No sound like a steamer coming down the tracks 🚂
So awesome to see steam trains. Love that whistle sound
It must be frustrating for the Cass crew - all that power, and nowhere to go!
Cass Scenic Railroad runs various excursions up the hill, some to the top of Bald Knob, if memory serves; it's a number of miles and takes several hours, because the average speed of the trains is 7 to 8 mph. Awesome trip. . .
Hey Jaw Tooth, where do they plug these locomotives in at night😂🤣 Great video, long live steam!
Good afternoon Jaw Tooth.
Hello William
I rode behind a shay just south of Yosemite park. I also rode behind a Heisler at Roring Camp. Steven Sipes
Fantastic. What an amazing sight. Thank you Jae Tooth.
Amei as maria fumaça valeu parabéns👋👋👋👋👋🎆
Their running with full power. Seriously hot fires burning to just blow off the whistle as much as he has. Freight trains.
Hello from "downeast" Maine..
Hello from South West Michigan
Oh my lord. What a spectacular vision. AWESOME !! 👍👍👍👍👍. four of the locos I recognise as Shays', but what is number 9 ? 🇬🇧
That is a Climax
That was just incredible! WOW!!!!😊
That was a very cool video. It would be something to see larger steam locomotives in competition like this one.. 2102 Nickel Plate N&W etc.
Thank you very much!😊
they really get your attention...
The echos when the whistles blast are amazing.
Thanks for watching!😊
❤️
Shay loco
Great video. Love watching these beauties. Wish they could get the locomotive at our local park fired up. They had planned at one time.
Would've loved to see Shay #6. She's Western Maryland #6, the world's largest Shay. Incidentally, does Cass have any Willamette engines? It's technically similar to a Shay, but an altogether different engine type.
The #2, their newest other than the WM #6, incorporated improvements made by Willamette and would be a good comparison. I recall reading that there is only one actual Willamette left, and it is on display elsewhere. The WM #6 must be undergoing its boiler replacement cycle. Cass does own a Heisler, which I believe has been running out of Durbin. The Climax marked for Moore Keppel & Company, had previously been doing that.
Can almost smell the acrid coal smoke and the steamed lubricants on the sleeves.
After the second run i would been done
With the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer the smell of coal smoke will hang in the valley 24 hours a day now as some people still use it for heating and cooking. Still a bit until the leaves give their last triumphant show and then the number of visitors drops off dramatically. When all the engines are gathered there near the end it almost sounds like a set of Chapel Bells. Here's to Autumn
