- First Time That 5 Shay Steam Locomotives Operated At Same Time! These Are Real Coal Burning Steam Engines On The Cass Scenic Railroad In Cass West Virginia. The Worlds Largest Collection Of Geared Steam Locomotives, Cass Scenic Railroad Operates On Logging Tracks & Ex Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Tracks. Lots of smoke and steam train whistles!
I left my home at 3am and arrived at Cass, West Virginia at 9am. This is Part 1 of 2 parts. We see the locomotives make 5 round trip passes from the water tower to the train station and back. Each eastbound trip the locomotives were running forward and something different was done. You will see the steam engines running single and in groups. The final pass was the grand finale with as much whistle and smoke as possible. That was really awesome and loud! I filmed at a couple of different spots. Which location and which pass was your favorite?
It was special to see Shay Number 6 back in operation. It was the final Shay built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1945. The locomotive spent 4 years in operation hauling coal before retirement.
The trains operate on 160.455 and are standard gauge. Last year Cass operated 4 Shays and a Climax locomotive. I filmed that and you can find last years Parade Of Steam in my Steam Trains play list. Part 2 will show the passenger trains pulled by the steam locomotives. They ran 2 round trip passenger trains along the river on the line that goes to Durbin, West Virginia. The line is finally open all the way from Cass to Durbin although these trains did not run the fun distance.
Filmed Saturday, June 15, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video Brian! It was an honor to finally meet you there on my birthday. You always do a great job with your commentary and editing to put your videos together! I was hoping to meet the dogs, too 🐕🐕😊
Happy birthday! I didn't know it was your birthday on that day. That was a good day to have one. I was glad to meet you also. I had been thinking of stopping over at St Denis to Railfan for a long time. Cass would be a pretty good little ride for the dogs but I took Chessie today to chase a train. That was fun at Cass and I hope you had a great day!
Hello baltimore , I think in dark tshirt and light blue sleeves !
Good video Jawtooth !
@@BOATNIAGARA Hello! 👋
@@JawTooth I met Dave back in October at St Denis
@@CSXOhioRailFanPlus752 I always wanted to go to St Denis and Railfan with him and the other fans there.
Those steam engineers sure know how to make the whistles talk!!
Those Shay's are such an interesting breed of steamers. Great invention for handling the steep terrains when they were logging.
Indeed!
Parents took me there as kid back in the 80's . Great memories !
I love it. Thanks for watching!
My folks brought me there 1969. I was 10
Magnificent sight absolutely magnificent my father would have had tears in his eyes excellent video
Wow, thank you!
@@JawTooth he loved steam trains
You never get tired of hearing those steam whistles. Wow
Very awesome steam show, Brian. I really enjoyed watching all the sounds and smoke from them.
Many thanks!
Nice! My late mother-in-law would love to be here! We took her here in the 80s, and in the 2000s my oldest son rented a car and took her back to Cass again! She couldn't get enough of this place!
Very cool! It really is a great place to visit
Those Shay’s are amazing machines, thanks for doing this video.
Glad you like them!
Beautiful, steam locomotive music! Thank you so very much!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Phenomenal engineering on display here. Amazing technology for its time.
Sweet melodies for all to savor.............
You gotta love this place! So many Shay locomotives
You got that right!
I watch your videos every day. Love the pets. The steam locomotives are awesome with their mechanical functions. Like a piston engine with gear drive!
Thanks for watchibg my videos!
Mr. Tooth - What a great video. That's impressionist 'moving' art at its best. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching!
They sure love those whistles!
The final runby was the loudest. They really laid it on
Love steam locos. Thank you for sharing. Hope you had a good Father's day. God bless
Thank you! You too!
That was really cool. One of your best. I hope I can get there someday. Thank you so much for taking us there with that great video
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comments!
These are the weirdist strange looking but sounding good steam locos
Thanks for watching!
I used about that much steam last night to cook my asparagus. Thanks, Señor Jaws. It's good to see others enjoying the steam also.
RT sends/envía, Colonia Centro Histórica, Puebla, México... Have a great day!
More smoke and steam than you could imagine! Greta Thunberg was yelling something but I couldn't hear her and I couldn't see her through all the smoke Lol
An Excellent video to start the morning off! It sure was a great day at Cass! I’m glad we got to see number 6!
Glad you enjoyed it! Number 6 was awesome and we almost had 6 steamers this year
Hey there Mr. Tooth. Wow. Thanks for the coverage. Great stuff.
Our pleasure!
Good morning JT! Stay cool today!☀️
Morning!
I always like Cass. Thanks for a great video 😊 !
Thanks for watching!
The sound of the whistles echoing through the valley was awesome and haunting.
Thanks for watching!
Cool Video of Steamers! Cool Whistles too! They say the Engineer would choose the Sound of the Whistle for his Steam. Some Engineers had a bunch of different tone Whistles.
Thanks for watching!
I had an uncle who started out on steam engines with the L&N Railway and he had two whistles which he kept when he retired. I remember he used both of them.
Very nice Shay locomotive's. Very good . And sure "There all ways more"
Yes indeed!
Howdy jawtooth thanks for the shoutout yesterday I enjoyed it and epic stream video
Any time! Remind me next year on your birthday also. Thanks for supporting my channel!
Yes Connor gin June 16
Awesome video keep up with a great work and be safe out there.
Thanks, will do!
I like No 5 s whistle the best. Echoing up and down the hollar
Sweet Steam! Great Turn Out, MOST EXCELLENT VIDEO. 💯👍👍🤠🇺🇸
Thanks 👍
Good morning, another great steam video. Awesome
Stay safely blessed
Good morning and thanks for watching!
DPU. Definitely Perfect Unison. I can just picture JT there I see you and you and you. Also you had it made with all the coal smoke drifting just to the other side so you didn't have to breathe it all in and it didn't block the photos. Perfect place to just sit back and enjoy the view. Looking forward to more!
Excellent video of the steam trains jawtooth!
Thank you very much!
Love the steam whistles. Awesome video. Have a nice day 😊🌈
Thank you! You too!
Was nice to meet you there.
Nice meeting you also! I hope you got some good shots also. We got lucky with the weather
Awesome steam trains Jawtooth! Awesome event! Thanks for sharing!👍

Nice JT great video thanks have a great day from Scotland 😊
Thanks 👍
Your welcome JT thanks 😉
Wow! Excellent catching all the steam engines in Cass, West Virginia, I like them, they're awesome, @JawTooth, Brian, thank you very much and happy late-Father's day.
Glad you like them! Thanks Ivan!
I love it when you visit Cass, always a highlight for me JT. It's hard to pick a favourite they are all so special. I definitely preferred trains going forward on the first individual run & for me Cass number 5 edged it! for the amount of smoke bellowing out of her huge funnel, they all had extremely loud whistles! It's a beautiful place with the backdrop of all the hills & trees. I bet people come from all over the US to witness this spectacle it's awesome. The highlight of course all of the locos riding along together beautiful sight. Unfortunately I can only watch on video because all that smoke & steam would aggravate my lung disease & put me in hospital! 😅 All your fans appreciate you so much JT for driving all that way & filming Cass for us, thank you. ❤❤❤❤🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂😊👍
I love the images of this parade of steam locomotives. Machines from another age, belching steam and smoke for your viewing pleasure!
Thanks for watching!
Superb video, great to see the steam loco,s, not seen that type over here.
Hey Brain, I hope you had a nice time. This was my first time going to the parade and I enjoyed it. It was a bit difficult to get clear shots but it was fun.
I agree, it was very difficult to get good shots. I am glad that you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Great catches awesome capture and nice video
Thank you very much!
Thanks for taking the long drive to bring this to us. Spectacular !!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very cool. While I'm not a big steam locomotive fan, I find this very impressive. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
it's great to see and hear the old steam locomotives may they continue to run.
I agree. It was a lot of fun
It's probably my favorite place in all of West Virginia!
It is a great place. Not many places where you can see this much steam
nice
Thanks
The engineer aboard the Number 5 locomotive was the best, and seemed to be the only one who understands how to (impressively) blow those steam whistles in mountain terrain...you time each "blast" (with a "snap" of the cord) to "play off" of the mountainsides...it's the "haunting" echo that makes these timeless whistles so appealing...not pumping the "daylight" out of 'em.
Great video jaw tooth. It never gets old to watch the Cass rolling stock. Cass railroad is a photo card railroad. Every photo taken can be used on a postcard. What a show of all American power. Thank you again. Great show.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love hearing the echo of the steam whistle in the distance.
Very good shay steam locomotives running seen and whistle . Because I'm today is happy!
Thank you very much!
Awesome video with a whistle salute but wait there’s more 👍🇺🇸😎🚂👍
♨ What a good video !
Thank you!
Was hoping you would go this year. It looked like a perfect day, smoky, steamy, loud, no rain. and exciting!!! Glad to see they had a large crowd, hope they had plenty of food trucks and concessions. And plenty of porta potties!
This is the best weather I have ever seen at Cass. Perfect temperature and sun. Last year it was cloudy. They also had live music under a big tent. It was excellent and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the early am wake up! Train #2 favorite whistle.
#11 could talk though!
Morning! Thanks for watching!
Wow ! What an impressive show. Thanks for sharing Brian, wish I could have been there but your shots are the next best thing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely. I try not to miss any of your videos. Occasionally I might, but I sure don't do that intentionally. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
I appreciate your support Gary! Thanks. I am going to Kenova on Friday with Scott and Joey
@JawTooth You're welcome, JT! Kenova is probably my second
favorite bridge after the high bridge
in Kentucky. Even though it scares the daylights out of me, I can't get enough of that bridge!
JT, the only way that could have been better is if they came past one by one, throttles open all the way, pulling 30 cars of logs. I'm talking _Shays!_ Lots of people these days don't know just what steam power did for everyone. We didn't live in that era. However, if it were not for that steam era we would not have gotten this era. it is a shame we have forgotten how to make them.
When they all pulled the whistle cords at the same time I laughed out loud. Absolutely 💯👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing Jaw Tooth! Cass is a special place, love the echoes off the hills.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love going there
That. Awesome.
Thanks!
Hi Jaw & Hi Mrs Tooth & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Jaw & Hi Mrs Tooth & Friends Randy & I Am Enjoy & You Video Jaw & Thanks Good Friends Randy
Thanks so much Randy!
I had to watch it again. Absolutely amazing.
Thanks for your support! I appreciate it Mark
JT those Shay engines was strictly built for power, not speed. I think their top speed was like 20 to 30 miles an hour, but they were built for the logging industry. They used to pull massive loads of logs out of the mountains and through the valleys and stuff like that but anyway, another awesome video my friend and you stay safe out there and watch your back and be careful on your ride back home.
That's Cool
Thanks!
Howdy Brian and all the fans. Hope everyone has a great week...
Not the day to dry the whites on the line in Cass!!
This is an entertaining video of your time at the Parade of Steam at the Cass Scenic Railroad on 15 June 2024, Jaw Tooth! I enjoyed watching this video with all the smoke and whistles of the five Cass Scenic Railroad's Shay steam locomotives. The men who blow the steam whistles on these steam locomotives know how to work the whistles.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow it's I like it is videos, thanks for sharing is videos Mr. Jawtooth
Glad you like them!
That is so cool and Awesome
Thanks!
I could use that for mosquito season.
Yup, lol
Real nice video.
Thanks!
Great to see the Wild Mary 6 back in action!
Yes, that was awesome! We almost had 6 steamers this year but there was an issue with one, I think it was a Climax that was used last year
I think the Pacific Coast, number 2, has the best sounding whistle. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
It was good to meet you Saturday!!!! Always enjoy your videos!!!
You too!! that was a lot of fun. I still have enough video to make another one. Maybe I will catch you there again next year
@@JawTooth Sounds like a plan!!!!!
Amazing videos Jaw Tooth keep up the good work

Awesome and cool . Love the Steam Engine's whistle blowing. Loved this.❤ I like the bell too..Thanks Mr JT. Very good. Really enjoyed this.❤😊sweet fur babies too ❤️
Thank you very much!
The Park Ranger said they were figuring on about 5000 people. Pretty awesome up there in our Hills of West Virginia
I bet it was every bit that much. They filled the big parking lot and gave shuttle rides in with a tractor and wagon. I should have rode that. I would say there were more ppl this year than last year but the weather was better this year. Thanks for watching!
Great video as always JawTooth
Shout out to Mrs JawTooth
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
🖐
I like the 4 and 5 love there whistles of the first run
Love this. I spent some time as a kid above Cass at uncle's homeplace. There was a stagecoach that crossed the river then too, along with original store, before it burnt.
Wow! Lotta black smoke! I love it ❤️🚂
Thanks for watching Gabor!
@@JawTooth Hi Brian! 🤝 You're welcome!

Beautiful and very familiar sound.

That was an awesome surprise, thanks JT! No 2 Pacific Coast Shay is dear to my heart being originally from here in British Columbia 🇨🇦
Shays are my all time favorite steam locomotives.
Thank you for getting up so early to bring this to us. Much appreciated that's for sure.
Greta, "How Dare You!" 😆😂🤣👍🏻🌬 "That was classic!"
When I get rich, lol I'll fly you and the girls out west here to Vancouver Island to check out the Duncan Logging Museum at the BC Forest Discovery Centre and then we'll check out a few Logging Railroad Museums in Washington State too.
I like the way that you got quite a few shots of people's backs who were standing too close to the tracks. I thought for a moment there you were in Mexico waiting to see the 2816. 😬
Again, thanks for this wonderful video! 🙏🏻
PS - You should see you hats this week.
The Shay’s are so cool. Great video Brian😊
Thanks so much! Today I was on the NS New Castle Sub near Camden and it really got busy in the early evening. I got about 6 trains in three hours
@@JawTooth I was with Scott when he was talking to ya and I’m glad you got some action
I thought that may be you as we had passed by on the caboose, glad you could make it to the parade! It was spectacular!
Yes it was! That was awesome and in Part 2 I will show the passenger trains passing by
Thanks JT great video love the steamer !!

Very Family Orientated as well which is good to see.
