John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 38 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first Elton John album as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show ‚”The Cross Canada Report‚” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts an the evening show at Move 103.5 (formerly QM-FM) in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

There is a Facebook page for the Rock and Roll HOF. I thought of creating a FB page to petition Sweet's induction. There are other FB pages created for that intention. However from seeing those pages and also having contacted the HOF page myself, one would be successful finding a needle in a haystack instead of seeing their band being inducted--simply put, it doesn't happen via fans' input. I think it's criminal that Sweet aren't in the HOF because they have defiitely met all the HOF's criteria for induction.
The Sweet is my favorite band of all time and I'm so glad Andy is still alive and is still rocking and kickin ass, R.I.P. Brian Connolly, Mick Tucker and Steve Priest, The Sweet Rocks Forever!

Your old man was great... No doubt a natural born showman! And from what I can tell from seeing various interviews, he seemed to have been quite a very down to earth and honest bloke as well.

The Sweet are an underrated hard rock heavy metal band!
Hi, hardly underrated. They were huge in the 70's. Trust me, I was there...they were very much the soundtrack of my/our youth. I had loads of their singles which I played to death and the single greatest reason why I became a lifelong rock/metal fan.

I met Brian Connolly on a train into London once, he was a troubled man but we laughed and chatted for the 20-25 minute journey. It came to light that the lifestyle had taken him out of his life and just left a performer not the person needing drugs to keep going. I looked into his eyes and he was troubled. A newspaper in the UK was reporting some lies about him and I was with him after what they had said. I asked for his autograph for a friend of mine who was a really big fan. But I'd rather remember these guys as fun loving glam rockers who loved their music and took their fans in on which I was a big one too. I look at the video for Fox on the run and think of Brian, it was a time I enjoyed and only wished I could help him or at least be in his corner when he was going into the fight. Thanks guys.
Andy fully deserves all of his success and he has achieved so much respect as a writer, guitarist, vocalist and performer from other discerning musicians . Andy is still keeping the Sweet name alive ... God bless him !

One evening in 1974 a friend and I were in the Angel, a pub in Staines when we saw a guy that looked like Brian, on his own at the bar. We approached him and asked are you Brian Connolly of The Sweet? It was and we spent the evening talking and drinking with him. He’d been looking at houses that day and asked us to go with him to a nightclub across the road, sadly we declined as we had work the next day but he said he’d meet us next week in the Angel. That was the night Brian was attacked and his vocal cords damaged. If we’d gone with him maybe we could have helped him, sadly we never did meet again. R.I.P. Brian, thank you for an evening we’d never forget, to our surprise you were just like the rest of us, nothing like the image we saw on TV.

Met Andy in person in about early 2000s after a concert. Very humble and very genuine person to speak to, we actually took close up photos when they were playing with no objection at all. Unlike some of the musicians today who have a 9ft gorilla making sure you don't take any photos at all. Sweet was and still is my favourite band since I first heard Ballroom Blitz way back in the early seventies.
I met Steve Priest about three or four years ago at Riviera theater in North Tonawanda New York for a show. He signed all my sweet albums. Great guy
Fantastic band.... “Desolation Boulevard” and “Give Us A Wink” were REALLY big in Los Angeles... where I’m from.
Listened to the hell outta those out in San Berdino
Listened to sweet on KLOS and KMET. I am from the San Fernando Valley. KLOS is still playing sweet today.
I have to say that Desolation Boulevard is one of the most underrated albums of all time in the rock genre.
As a drummer, I was so shocked last year to read that Mick had died. No one and i mean NO ONE has ever come up with such an iconic shuffle as he did, and that Ludwig sounded awesome.
In fact i was shocked that 3 of them were dead (i knew about Brian)
Ready Mick? Oh yes that drum intro was iconic. Still gets my blood flowing decades later.
Mick Tucker was a drumming powerhouse.

The Sweet was only "underrated" in the UK, but in Europe The Sweet were far more appreciated.
@@redblade8160 I think he means in hindsight..... they have been typically left out of classic rock discussion since the 1990s when on top of everything else they also accidently laid the groundwork for 1980s soft rock.
i loved Sweet
One of my favorite concerts in the 70's - Sweet and Eric Carmen at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, February 1976.
Saw the same awesome show at Stetson U. in Deland Florida in Feb 76.
Wish I could have seen it. Eric was a good friend, and The sweet was to. Eric was the reason, I got to meet and hang out with The sweet.
Steve came to visit me, he wanted to know how, I knew so many important people in the music world.
I did show up at some of their concerts, I was a young kid. Everytime, I showed up the anoucer would introduce me as Little Willy. And ask if I was leaving.

In 1975 I was 8. I heard Sweet and that was it. I knew I had to play drums. still playing today. Thank you for this interview and fond memories. Andy is a cool dude.

@@vracan Huh? Most of the songs, at least during the classic period in the 1970s were written and arranged by the entire band together.... which includes Andy Scott....
Furthermore, as an individual, Andy Scott has more solo writing credits on the albums than anyone else....
He literally has writing credit on well.over 90% of Sweet's material..... What are you talking about?

They were a great band, and great times to be a teenager. Hang on in there Andy.

We recently acquired new neighbours, who moved in next door and began to
have major renovations done to the house. They subsequently made a lot
of noise. So, in retaliation, I put "Sweets Greatest Hits" on very loud to
counteract the noise they were making. Not that "Sweets" music is noise.
Its just bloody good "Hell Raising" music.

Great idea to interview Andy Scott. The man is a living legend. His music has grown and so well evolved over the years. I say him play so many tiles, great artist. All my respect. These interviews add a new layer to his life work
I saw Andy with the Sweet in January 2020. It was a great show with all their hits, and a room full of people loved every minute of it. He can still play and hit those very high notes.
What an underrated band. Ballroom Blitz was a garage band staple. Fox on the Run was all over AM and FM radio. On top of that the album cover of Gives Us a Wink is why I feel sorry sometimes for the download generation.
Thanks for sharing, I was 7 years when I was listening to their records the first time. I always loved Glam Rock and still do to this day. I grew up with T.Rex and Sweet. At that time I only owned an old record player, where I could listen to this music. But it was great. I still have all these Records kept for so many ages. Anyways great time, great songs, amazing high vocals and excellent arranged chant. All in all great music that will last forever. May Steve R.I.P. God bless you all!

I had the pleasure of meeting Andy backstage in Warrington late 2019 in better times ! He was an absolute gentleman. I’ve loved the band since I saw them in a look in annual when I was 5 and finally got to see and meet the band backstage in Leeds shortly after starting work in 1985 ! I now own approximately 95% of their records (only a few unofficial unreleased tracks remain) and they are always in my heart ! Was due to see them last Christmas but covid screwed things up ! Hope to see them soon and love to sweet fans and music fans worldwide x

I used to buy Look-in every week (one shilling) when it first came out from 1971 to 1972 (Tony Bastable from Magpie was on the front cover). And I had the Look-in annual (Roger Moore was on the front cover).
Saw The Sweet 59 times in various line-ups - only once with the "classic" line up - thank God Andy still rocks and lets us old farts hear their songs live!

There is no way to put to words my love for each of the Sweet guys. Every one was a superhero character to me. Andy Scott is a legend and I’m so glad he’s still around. A Lovely mate in every way, in and out of makeup.

Great interview. Glad I had a chance to meet Andy a very long time ago in the later part of 1990. They had tried to get the original, classic lineup back together, but, it didn't work out. Only Mick was with Andy at the time,at the gig that I saw Sweet at. Andy and Mick were great guys. and it was a great show. Andy still had the magic with his guitar playing, and high backing vocals. And Mick was a very solid drummer. But, I would have much preferred to have seen the original band. Brian, Steve, and Micks talents are missed. R.I.P.
Mick was one of the best drummers of his generation.
The original members of Sweet had a fall out with one another in 1978, especially with Brian Connolly and his alcohol addiction... In an interview with Brian Connolly he said that he never got on with Andy Scott from day one!
I saw them when Mick was still with Andy in 94 . I asked Andy why he was playing a squire strat , he said his original guitars were now too valuable
To gig . It was a brilliant show, only marred by a few idiots shouting where’s Brian.
Some great songs back in the day..still played today.

Blockbuster! went straight into the chart at N0 16 first week in January 1973 and second week N0 8, third week N0 2, forth week N0 1 and it stayed at the top spot for five weeks!

When I was 5 I bought my first record: The single of Fox on the Run.
I must have played it 20 times in a row when I got home.
I've still got it.
When I hear The Sweet now it hits me how awesome the drums and guitar work are.
My first experience of a rockconcert was 1976 and The Sweet! It was loud and it was great! I will never forget it! Many years later I had the pleasure of shaking hands with Andy Scott after their Andy Scotts Sweet gig in Stockholm Sweden.Thank you Andy. It was a great gig.
I found a live recording on CZcams of Sweet playing Funny Funny live in 1971. No video, but quite cool to hear. And as we know, Windy City can only be played at the highest volume that your ears can handle.

It's just really awesome to hear him say that his Dad was a lovely man, his HERO! We've seen/heard so many big name rock artists speak of how horrible their relationship was with their parents! I've seen a FEW men who said they had a good relationship, but it's SO rare! You wonder if their relationship was honestly that horrible - or.was their story concocted to bolster the image of one of the "BAD BOYS of Rock and Roll"? Glad to know our generation could make good music AND have a good relationship with their parents!.

Thanks for posting! I have always liked the hits, but the rock genius of the band really hit me the last few years.
I met Andy in Fulham while working with a solo female artist covering Sweets "Love Is Like Oxygen"; Andy wrote that song and helped produce the singer to get it right. Wonderful bloke; he had long black hair then. I think it was early 90's? maybe mid 90's. Heck of a good bloke.
This is so great. I love this band and I never knew much of anything more than the few hits they had. Recently, in the past couple years, I dove into their catalog and just love them. I could watch The Ballroom Blitz top of the pops video every single day of my life. Great interview and it's amazing that he still going with the band and the only surviving member.

I wish Andy would realise that he was 25% of The Sweet, a great contributor but not the 'be all and end all'. after Brian parted company it was all over.
They were great, one of my favorites in elementary and middle school.

Thanks for this interview with Andy Scott. It was great to hear him speak about his upbringing as well as speaking from a musician's viewpoint. Though I was a baby when they were in their prime, I was introduced to Sweet's music by a friend of a friend. Being a musician, I found their overall musicianship--including their vocal and instrumental arpeggios--as auditory gold to my ears. My cockatiel(bird)Chipper loves Sweet too--he whistles the first line of the "Little Willy" chorus and then improvises his own melodies. He also starts whistling and singing when he hears their songs, So imagine: Sweet being a musical influence to a bird LOL.
He's one of the best guitar player I've ever heard. He and the former band along with Brian, Steve and Micl are still the best after The Beatles and The Hollies, but in 70's.
I met Andy on a cruise a couple of years back....fantastic guy, still awesome musician ☺️

My favorite member of the band. Man, I hope this gentleman Andy stays with us long enough. R.I.P. the rest of the band :( It's unforgivable what Brian's attacker did. Otherwise, the band would've been more huge in the 80's.

At 17 I waa in the Rhodesian Army either trupping the Zambesi Valley and Eaatern Highlands on patrol or being heli-borne into contact situations. But the music of 70's Sweet like Hellraiser, Teenage Rampage, Fox on the Run and of course The Ballroom Blitz was regularly spinning on the turntable of the base pub during down time at the various Fireforce bases helping to forget the events of the day and psyching one up to meet possible contact with the enemy the next day. Such great melo's still stir my blood to this day.

Ballroom Blitz it was a great night they did a version of fanfare for the common man.
