  • On this video let’s talk about historical ninjutsu compared to the reality of todays world. Are you training in Ninpo for real life today or acting out something that has been dead for hundreds of years?

    Second Dan in american ninjutsu under Robert Bussey here.
    If you're training in any martial art, testing it under pressure with resisting opponents, sparring, eating right, and going to the gym, you will become a skilled fighter, no matter which style. The problem is this style or that style doesnt work for self defense, MMA, or whatever else, is usually because you are not doing one if those things. There's no secret or short cut to training, just like there is no secret or short cuts for weight loss or muscle gain.
    At the end of the day 99% of hobby martial artists (not training for military, police or other similar reason) train because it's fun. Its something to do. You get to pretend to be a ninja two hours a week, and that's okay. Most of these guys will never get in a fight, let alone find themselves storming a castle during the Japanese civil war.

      You've touched on valid and true points to which many would agree and many disagree. I'm in the agree with you camp because as I've matured I see life and experience from a place if knowledge and wisdom. When I was a younger man I did many different styles of Martial arts eventually settling into bujinkan and attaining shodan after several years and two trips to Japan. I left the organisation due to several reasons, an injury from an over zealous sensei and a dojo too tight to purchase mats. Certain politics and also a realisation that not many high level instructors were as proficient as their Japanese counterparts. The problem with the bujinkan is you never really got enough time learning a particular Ryu before you switch to the Ryu of the other school next year. Unless you had lots of video and a group to train in a particular Ryu outside of the current training that year in Japan you'd become rusty by the time it came around again. Many people spend a life time trying to perfect on Ryuha maybe two let alone 9. This is why I believe Hatsumi has now given Individual sokeships to the dedicated daishihans so that students can now become proficient in a martial school or two and it puts the schools back as they were initially. Tanemura attempted to separate the schools to the ninpo and samurai JuJutsu but still students had to learn a mix up as opposed to becoming awarded achievement in a particular Ryu of their choice. If I'm going to invest a chunk of my life's hard earned money into learning i would hope I can then open my own school and recoup some money aswell as pass on my acquired knowledge and skill. Most martial arts even the classical Escoteric Japanese schools encourage students to go forth and teach the art beyond Japan giving a menkyo licence without much ado. That's very difficult in the bujinkan and genbukan because it's not a given once you get a certain level of attainment..it could now be possible to learn and keep the individual schools thriving. What you said about cross training is extremely important because being fit strong and healthy is half the battle with self defence and even becoming a proficient martial artists. So E arts require a level of fitness to do the art well especially TKD or competition level martial arts. Bruce Lee came across as so formidable due to his fitness from running, Weight training etc. Ive seen so many technicians in the various schools that really are going to get destroyed in a real life scenario against a young guy street fighter or boxer and god forbid they have to run to safety.

    Martial Arts in general is dead. The reason is that people are lazy and wont dedicate time to the Arts. Also because folks just want to fight in a ring. Most Martial Arts dont train for that.

  • @adandyguyinspace5783
    @adandyguyinspace5783 Před 11 měsíci +2

    I know there's a 99% chance this won't get a response but I feel its not dead, it merely has to be tailored to whatever laws are around, like you said. In comparison to medieval times and even renaissance times (the general time period worldwide), we have an absolutely absurd amount of laws today and THOSE laws have laws. How we got here, no idea, but until the world drastically changes that's our reality. I think people tend to forget about improvised weapons. For example the techniques in Kali can be done literally with kitchen utensils, like a spatula, because a lot of kitchen utensils have length and you can swing it around. As long as it has length it can be used as a kali stick. If you want, or you can just do the hand to hand techniques taught in Kali as well, or the knife techniques if one carries a legal pocket knife. What about us though? No one carries metsubushi but what is readily available that's the same concept: pepper spray, dirt, mulch, etc.. Do the same techniques as taught in Togakure-Ryu (iirc there's Taijutsu as well in the curriculum) or from any of the other schools but just add pepper spray. What about the kenjutsu and bojutsu? Again, anything that has the appropriate length. There's also a guy on CZcams named KarateMart (I think) that sells durable and sturdy collapsible staffs which can be legal depending on where you're living. Ok, what about shuriken? Anything that can be thrown the same way and cause pain but doesn't necessarily have to be flat or even sharp. Kusarifundo, easy, a scarf or a towel or a thin jacket, and any type of clothing. I can go on and on but the gist is that some of the old stuff does have use for today as far as self-defense goes, we just have to adapt. What about the espionage material? Depends, but yes, however that's for people who don't care about BREAKING the law. The only thing though is we have cameras now not just guards (security, police etc.). In conclusion I feel its not entirely correct to say that none of ninjutsu will work in today's setting, or at least the weapons and espionage part because we know taijutsu (ninpo, ninpo taijutsu, whatever you wanna call it) works. Just because parts of it is illegal doesn't mean it inherently won't work, which it can, its just for the law-abiding citizen we have to make changes to keep in-line with the law.

      @@UnitedStatesNinpoAcademy Well that would land you in prison haha. You can’t make that look like an accident. But I think I get the gist of what you’re saying. When I started To-Shin Do (still a white belt) I got the immediate feeling that Ninpo, ninjutsu, whatever you wanna call it, is VERY sneaky and not straightforward like TKD, karate, etc. I have a 1st Dan in non-Olympic TKD, meaning I learned TKD as it was intended which included many hand techniques and blocks etc. if I wanna do a TKD push kick I just do the kick, but if I’m doing a Ninpo version I make it hard to see what I’m doing and make intention not as easy to follow if that makes sense. Ninpo is also a lot more circular and flow-y whereas in TKD it’s very linear and hard. Sensei you won’t believe how much my mind was blown when I saw the differences between the fighting philosophy of the two arts. But anyways back to our regularly scheduled program, I believe that we must adapt our martial art and that has to be communicated to Anshu Hayes and also to the other sensei in To-Shin Do AND Bujinkan. Even though Anshu Hayes did that with the Ninpo but not with the kenjutsu and other weapons. Teach how to adapt that stuff to improvised weapons, you know? When I get high enough to earn a warrior name, like my sensei, Scott “Akitoshi” Bragg, that would be my contribution.

    I disagree with your comments. The knowledge held in Ninjutsu is one of the few parts of Ninjutsu that is still applicable today because it deals with human nature which doesn’t really change over time. Additionally, there are very few weapons that are actually associated with Ninjutsu. There are many tools, most of which are outdated. The reality is, Ninjutsu died as Japan entered the Edo period. Modern intelligence agencies and special operations units still perform the many of the same tasks that the Shinobi did; however, it’s a falsehood to call that Ninjutsu as there have been operatives from all over the world during the time Shinobi were active up to now who have done the same jobs.

    • @UnitedStatesNinpoAcademy

      I agree with you. If done correctly today it’s self defense with CIA or military guerrilla warfare tactics. Which technically can be called Modern Ninjutsu just for the comparison to the correlation between what is done today and hundreds of years ago in Japan. Just the weapons and tactics have evolved. I tell students all the time. Really want to train in Ninjutsu. Join the military and join any special forces unit.

    There is one group of people who would need to know ninjutsu, they are prisoners, these days there are so many laws, you can get locked up for something very minor, then once your in jail, something happens that you can't control, and next thing you know, your doing a nice long bid, my question is, are you so confident that what you know will work, that is even works in prison?? Example: your in a 6 by 10 foot cell, with a 3 by 7 steel double bunk with sharp edges, and you got 4 guys, each with metal shanks, with barley any room left to fight, is there anything in your training that will get you out of that situation?? alive?? Also do you remember we both attended the same seminar and met briefly, it was by Sensei Mike McGee, in 2001 in Essex at Dave Street's dojo??

    • @UnitedStatesNinpoAcademy
      @UnitedStatesNinpoAcademy  Před rokem

      The physical tactics in Ninpo is what is called Ninjutsu. These tactics are based on spiritual , physical and mental. In life or prison you will need all three. Spiritual to stay calm and focused to see and predict what is going on around you. To see the truth clearly. Physical to be able to move your body to either defend or if needed take the offense eliminate a threat. Will it work? Like every martial art how hard have you training and have you pressure tested yourself to have the timing, accuracy and effectiveness to survive. But part of the physical side of Ninjutsu is tactical strategy to trap or avoid physical danger. Even in a tight confined environment these sharp edges and limited space have to be used to your advantage. On the mental side of the training you would have to out smart the entire situation and find ways to make friends earn respect or fear to keep violence out of the equation. It would take a calm focused spirit, physical awareness and execution combined with mental preparation and social skills to create a positive environment where you have created comrades not enemies. Obviously avoiding prison is step one.

      100% agree. For a true student of the art there is a lot that can be used. Fighting is just a very small part of Ninjutsu. In many systems fighting is all they have outside of conditioning. The mental strategy and spiritual connection can be used everyday. And this does not just apply to Ninpo, that warrior mindset is critical every day.

    Now days, at least in my area, just the accusation of physical contact is enough to get you tossed in jail. All someone has to do is say you touched them, and you go to jail, no questions asked. FACT. Combat skills are, today, a quick and for sure way to get tossed behind a locked door for about 6 months. I have trained for 45 years now and will never stop but be willing to spend at least 3K of your cash and at least 6 months of your time if you plan on using it, even if you are in the right. Law doesn't want skilled or even unskilled combat. They fear it. And what the fear they eradicate.

    It depends on what you mean by "ninjutsu."
    The way ninjas are depicted in the movies... Never actually existed. That is Hollywood fantasy nonsense.
    When I say never actually existed... What I mean is there is zero historical records of anything that resembles what you see in a modern ninja movie.
    They took this... Embellished it ridiculously... Took that... Embellished it ridiculously...just to make fun movies.
    And don't get me wrong...
    I LOVE ninja movies as much as the next guy... But they never existed.
    There's a lot of misconceptions... Especially nowadays... ninjas were expert in stealth covert operations... And intelligence-gathering. "Ninjutsu"... The actual ninjutsu...which wasn't called "ninjitsu" back in the day... that's its modern incantation...
    But what "Ninjutsu" was...was random techniques that work from different styles of martial arts... random weapons training with different types of weapons that were readily available... And stealth intelligence-gathering.
    And today we still have what you would imagine a "ninja" being...they're called Navy SEALs.
    I guess what I'm saying is ...
    the "martial art"..."Ninjutsu"...is less than 100 years old.

      @@UnitedStatesNinpoAcademy Well I commented before I saw your entire video and heard your perspective. I admire your honesty and integrity regarding realistic training methods. I was in the Bujinkan and left because of politics and bad training. One of the criticisms I am seeing is the same from a few individuals that had more experience in the art that trained me that left for the same reason you spoke of. Lack of Sparring aliveness and no pressure testing and the lack of quality control within the organization. I commend you for at least wanting to have some sense of realism in your training to give to your students. I just don't see the point in training in something from the past that you have to make work and make it street-ready when there are arts like the ones found in MMA that are already proven and tested to work on the street unless you are doing it for self-development and Historical reasons like you mentioned. I currently am studying more reality-based Self Defense methods because I feel they are more practical and suit my needs than anything Bujinkan or the Takamatsuden has to offer.
