I bought one of these for my garage, and then thought....... I could heat my home with this! So that's exactly what i did! It is working great pumping hot air into my home. It is keeping us nice and warm and super economical.
I have a carbon monoxide detector just in case, but you don't get any fumes indoors at all
.
I hope this may help you in some way. Even if it just makes an idea pop up in your head, of how you can heat your home in cheaper way.

If you want to boost the storage capacity, could pour water or melted wax into the sand. More mass is more heat stored of course, but at a lower temp so even more heat extracted from the exhaust. Wax is especially nice since it should be capable of storing a big amount of phase change heat; keeping the wall of the exhaust colder for a longer time, and releasing the heat at a nice even temperature so it will also output a relatively equal amount of power over time.
put a few lines of painters tape on the gas bottle so your laser thermometer can get a reading. the surface of the gas bottle is to shiny and your thermometer needs a non reflective surface to get an accurate reading. also if you put a sheet of copper all the way to the bottom of the sand and to the top. you can get a thermo electric fan used for fireplaces to help circulate the heat might take a few days to heat that amount of sand.

I have used the same like urs only red now for 3 years stright. Not stopped at all after fine tune diesel heater.

I wonder if maybe you should put the muffler on the inboard side of the Sandbox. as the condensation builds up on the outboard side it may settle in the low points of the muffler and cause pre-mature rusting. So the order could be Heater to muffler to sandbox battery to external exhaust. Great experiment you have here!

I am in holland now.
Have bean coming in boat from norway germany Polen Tsjekkia Polen germany holland cos of broken waterways in Tsjekkia.
I have lived and traveling whit boat in norway in -30 minus degrese celsius in winter whit only 1 of 2 i have installed. Now I have used it for 3 years stright.
Ofcorse not at hottest days. But all the other days almost 365 days a year for 3 years.
I dont have muffler on. Extended pipe length whit copper pipe as it is a shaity diameter.
1 of them i gat for free broken them Said. BS
But most of all problems whit this burners is that them get to much diesel.
So secret code 1688 in menu and put low Hz at 1.2.
Topp Hz at 3.8-3.9
Makes it burn so clean your never more need to clean it for carbon build up.
Thats happening to them all !!!!!!!!!!!!
To much fuel.
And whit this new fine tune in secret 1688 menu your get more ore same heat. Mostly more. But your fuel consume goes waaaaaay down.
So flipp it over to celsius first.
Go to menu. 1688. 1.2hz at low. And 3.8hz at topp.
And put ur fan up to 2200 at low and 3800 at topp.
Just remember to see all light is on. 2 green first 2 yellow and 2 red in end. Can adjust fan after this for the finest tunes.
And think if have a berrol of water. 200 liter ore some like that. Smaller alsow.
5 meter thin copper pipe turned around and around on exsos close to mashinery.
Get an 12v small waterpump and get it to a berrol whit water.
Let that heat for 1 h and see how hot water container gets and how much of waste exsos heat you save.
If drive 24/7 in a house. This can be used at hot water tank.
